On a quantization of deformed reducible gauge theories

We consider a general reducible gauge theory deformed by mass or/and interaction terms violating gauge invariance. It is shown that in the Abelian case, by using the Stueckelberg-type procedure, this theory with broken gauge symmetry can be converted into exactly gauge-invariant theory which under a suitable choice of gauge conditions can be treated within the formalism of minimal wave operators manageable by the covariant Schwinger-DeWitt technique. We carry out quantization of such a theory in general terms when the initial generators of gauge transformations are of the first and second stages of reducibility and derive its partition function in terms of the functional integral with all corresponding ghost fields. This method is applied to quantization of massive fermionic totally antisymmetric tensor field models in $AdS$ space. One-loop quantum effective action for these models is derived in the form of the functional determinants of special Dirac-type differential operators in various dimensions.

Covariant quantization of totally antisymmetric tensor-spinor field in $AdS_d$

We develop the quantization of a recently proposed model describing a totally antisymmetric rank-$p$ tensor-spinor field (a fermionic $p$-form theory) in $d$-dimensional anti-de Sitter (AdS) space. The model provides a new nontrivial example of a reducible gauge theory, in which gauge transformations are linearly dependent and the degree of reducibility increases with $p$. It is well known that in such cases the standard Faddeev-Popov-DeWitt prescription for the generating functional is not applicable. We quantize the fermionic $p$-form theory using the general Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism, employing two distinct gauge fermions associated with gauge-fixing functions of different admissible ranks, confirming the independence from the gauge choice. As a result, we obtain the quantum effective action in terms of a sequence of functional determinants corresponding to specific Dirac-like operators on AdS space.

Adjustment of Faddeev-Popov quantization to reducible gauge theories: antisymmetric tensor fermion in $AdS_d$ space

We develop the method adjusting the Faddeev-Popov factorization procedure for the quantization of generic reducible gauge theories with linearly dependent generators and apply it to the first stage reducible model of second rank antisymmetric fermion in d-dimensional AdS spacetime. The method consists in nested factorizations of the gauge group volume for the determination of the consistently defined delta function of reduced gauge conditions, group integration measure and gauge-fixed contribution of ghosts. It is compared to the Batalin-Vilkovisky (BV) formalism of quantizing theories with linearly dependent generators and shown to be equivalent to it for first stage reducible theories. Nevertheless, the method under consideration, unlike the BV formalism, from the very beginning leads to the functional integral with fewer number of ghosts. Using this method we quantized the variant of fermionic totally antisymmetric tensor-spinor theory in AdS space and derived its effective action in terms of the functional determinants of special Dirac-type operators. Limitations of the method are also discussed along with the prospects of its extension to higher reducibility stages and higher rank models of antisymmetric fermions.

Restricted Gauge Theory Formalism and Unimodular Gravity

We develop a Lagrangian quantization formalism for a class of theories obtained by the restriction of the configuration space of gauge fields from a wider (parental) gauge theory. This formalism is based on application of the Batalin-Vilkovisky technique for quantization of theories with linearly dependent generators, their linear dependence originating from a special type of projection from the originally irreducible gauge generators of the parental theory. The algebra of these projected generators is shown to be closed for parental gauge algebras closed off shell. We demonstrate that new physics of the restricted theory, as compared to its parental theory, is associated with the rank deficiency of a special gauge-restriction operator reflecting the gauge transformations of the restriction constraints functions -- this distinguishes the restricted theory from its partial gauge fixing. As a byproduct of this technique a workable algorithm for the one-loop effective action in generic first-stage reducible theory was constructed, along with the explicit set of tree-level Ward identities for gauge field, ghost, and ghosts-for-ghosts propagators. The formalism is applied to unimodular gravity theory, and its one-loop effective action is obtained in terms of functional determinants of minimal second-order operators, calculable on generic backgrounds by Schwinger-DeWitt technique of local curvature expansion. The result is shown to be equivalent to Einstein gravity theory with a cosmological term up to a special contribution of the global degree of freedom associated with the variable value of the cosmological constant. The role of this degree of freedom in a special duality relation between Einstein theory and unimodular gravity is briefly discussed.

New type of hill-top inflation

We suggest a new type of hill-top inflation originating from the initial conditions in the form of the microcanonical density matrix for the cosmological model with a large number of quantum fields conformally coupled to gravity. Initial conditions for inflation are set up by cosmological instantons describing underbarrier oscillations in the vicinity of the inflaton potential maximum. These periodic oscillations of the inflaton field and cosmological scale factor are obtained within the approximation of two coupled oscillators subject to the slow roll regime in the Euclidean time. This regime is characterized by rapid oscillations of the scale factor on the background of a slowly varying inflaton, which guarantees smallness of slow roll parameters $ε$ and $η$ of the following inflation stage. A hill-like shape of the inflaton potential is shown to be generated by logarithmic loop corrections to the tree-level asymptotically shift-invariant potential in the non-minimal Higgs inflation model and $R^2$-gravity. The solution to the problem of hierarchy between the Planckian scale and the inflation scale is discussed within the concept of conformal higher spin fields, which also suggests the mechanism bringing the model below the gravitational cutoff and, thus, protecting it from large graviton loop corrections.

Origin of inflation in CFT driven cosmology: $R^2$-gravity and non-minimally coupled inflaton models

We present a detailed derivation of the recently suggested new type of hill-top inflation [arXiv:1509.07270] originating from the microcanonical density matrix initial conditions in cosmology driven by conformal field theory (CFT). The cosmological instantons of topology $S^1\times S^3$, which set up these initial conditions, have the shape of a garland with multiple periodic oscillations of the scale factor of the spatial $S^3$-section. They describe underbarrier oscillations of the inflaton and scale factor in the vicinity of the inflaton potential maximum, which gives a sufficient amount of inflation required by the known CMB data. We build the approximation of two coupled harmonic oscillators for these garland instantons and show that they can generate inflation consistent with the parameters of the CMB primordial power spectrum in the non-minimal Higgs inflation model and in $R^2$ gravity. In particular, the instanton solutions provide smallness of inflationary slow-roll parameters $ε$ and $η<0$ and their relation $ε\simη^2$ characteristic of these two models. We present the mechanism of formation of hill-like inflaton potentials, which is based on logarithmic loop corrections to the asymptotically shift-invariant tree level potentials of these models in the Einstein frame. We also discuss the role of $R^2$-gravity as an indispensable finite renormalization tool in the CFT driven cosmology, which guarantees the non-dynamical (ghost free) nature of its scale factor and special properties of its cosmological garland type instantons. Finally, as a solution to the problem of hierarchy between the Planckian scale and the inflation scale we discuss the concept of a hidden sector of conformal higher spin fields.

Monodromies and functional determinants in the CFT driven quantum cosmology

We apply the monodromy method for the calculation of the functional determinant of a special second order differential operator $F=-d^2/dτ^2+{\ddot g}/g$, $\ddot g= d^2g/dτ^2$, subject to periodic boundary conditions with a periodic zero mode $g=g(τ)$. This operator arises in applications of the early Universe theory and, in particular, determines the one-loop statistical sum for the microcanonical ensemble in cosmology generated by a conformal field theory (CFT). This ensemble realizes the concept of cosmological initial conditions by generalizing the notion of the no-boundary wavefunction of the Universe to the level of a special quasi-thermal state which is dominated by instantons with an oscillating scale factor of their Euclidean Friedmann-Robertson-Walker metric. These oscillations result in the multi-node nature of the zero mode $g(τ)$ of $F$, which is gauged out from its reduced functional determinant by the method of the Faddeev-Popov gauge fixing procedure. The calculation is done for a general case of multiple nodes (roots) within the period range of the Euclidean time $τ$, thus generalizing the previously known result for the single-node case of one oscillation of the cosmological scale factor. The functional determinant of $F$ expresses in terms of the monodromy of its basis function, which is obtained in quadratures as a sum of contributions of time segments connecting neighboring pairs of the zero mode roots within the period range.

Zero modes, gauge fixing, monodromies, $ζ$-functions and all that

We discuss various issues associated with the calculation of the reduced functional determinant of a special second order differential operator $\boldmath${F}$ =-d^2/dτ^2+\ddot g/g$, $\ddot g\equiv d^2g/dτ^2$, with a generic function $g(τ)$, subject to periodic and Dirichlet boundary conditions. These issues include the gauge-fixed path integral representation of this determinant, the monodromy method of its calculation and the combination of the heat kernel and zeta-function technique for the derivation of its period dependence. Motivations for this particular problem, coming from applications in quantum cosmology, are also briefly discussed. They include the problem of microcanonical initial conditions in cosmology driven by a conformal field theory, cosmological constant and cosmic microwave background problems.

The Schwinger-DeWitt technique for quantum effective action in brane induced gravity models

We develop the Schwinger-DeWitt technique for the covariant curvature expansion of the quantum effective action for brane induced gravity models in curved spacetime. This expansion has a part nonanalytic in DGP type scale parameter, leading to the cutoff scale which is given by the geometric average of the mass of the quantum field in the bulk and DGP scale. This cutoff is much higher than the analogous strong coupling scale of the DGP model treated by weak field expansion in the tree-level approximation. The lowest orders of this curvature expansion are calculated for the case of the scalar field in the $(d+1)$-dimensional bulk with the brane carrying the $d$-dimensional kinetic term of this field. The ultraviolet divergences in this model are obtained for a particular case of $d=4$.

Effective action and heat kernel in a toy model of brane-induced gravity

We apply a recently suggested technique of the Neumann-Dirichlet reduction to a toy model of brane-induced gravity for the calculation of its quantum one-loop effective action. This model is represented by a massive scalar field in the $(d+1)$-dimensional flat bulk supplied with the $d$-dimensional kinetic term localized on a flat brane and mimicking the brane Einstein term of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) model. We obtain the inverse mass expansion of the effective action and its ultraviolet divergences which turn out to be non-vanishing for both even and odd spacetime dimensionality $d$. For the massless case, which corresponds to a limit of the toy DGP model, we obtain the Coleman-Weinberg type effective potential of the system. We also obtain the proper time expansion of the heat kernel in this model associated with the generalized Neumann boundary conditions containing second order tangential derivatives. We show that in addition to the usual integer and half-integer powers of the proper time this expansion exhibits, depending on the dimension $d$, either logarithmic terms or powers multiple of one quarter. This property is considered in the context of strong ellipticity of the boundary value problem, which can be violated when the Euclidean action of the theory is not positive definite.

Quantum Effective Action in Spacetimes with Branes and Boundaries

We construct quantum effective action in spacetime with branes/boundaries. This construction is based on the reduction of the underlying Neumann type boundary value problem for the propagator of the theory to that of the much more manageable Dirichlet problem. In its turn, this reduction follows from the recently suggested Neumann-Dirichlet duality which we extend beyond the tree level approximation. In the one-loop approximation this duality suggests that the functional determinant of the differential operator subject to Neumann boundary conditions in the bulk factorizes into the product of its Dirichlet counterpart and the functional determinant of a special operator on the brane -- the inverse of the brane-to-brane propagator. As a byproduct of this relation we suggest a new method for surface terms of the heat kernel expansion. This method allows one to circumvent well-known difficulties in heat kernel theory on manifolds with boundaries for a wide class of generalized Neumann boundary conditions. In particular, we easily recover several lowest order surface terms in the case of Robin and oblique boundary conditions. We briefly discuss multi-loop applications of the suggested Dirichlet reduction and the prospects of constructing the universal background field method for systems with branes/boundaries, analogous to the Schwinger-DeWitt technique.

Nonperturbative heat kernel and nonlocal effective action

We present an overview of recent nonperturbative results in the theory of heat kernel and its late time asymptotics responsible for the infrared behavior of quantum effective action for massless theories. In particular, we derive the generalization of the Coleman-Weinberg potential to physical situations when the field is not homogeneous throughout the whole spacetime. This generalization represents a new nonlocal and nonperturbative action accounting for the effects of a transition domain between the spacetime interior and its infinity. In four dimensions these effects delocalize the logarithmic Coleman-Weinberg potential, while in $d>4$ they are dominated by new powerlike and renormalization-independent nonlocal structure. Nonperturbative behavior of the heat kernel is also constructed in curved spacetime with asymptotically-flat geometry, and its conformal properties are analyzed for conformally invariant scalar field. The problem of disentangling the local cosmological term from nonlocal effective action is discussed.

Nonperturbative late time asymptotics for heat kernel in gravity theory

Recently proposed nonlocal and nonperturbative late time behavior of the heat kernel is generalized to curved spacetimes. Heat kernel trace asymptotics is dominated by two terms one of which represents a trivial covariantization of the flat-space result and another one is given by the Gibbons-Hawking integral over asymptotically-flat infinity. Nonlocal terms of the effective action generated by this asymptotics might underly long- distance modifications of the Einstein theory motivated by the cosmological constant problem. New mechanisms of the cosmological constant induced by infrared effects of matter and graviton loops are briefly discussed.

The equivalence of these methods is shown due to nontrivial duality relations between special boundary operators of these two problems. Previously known braneworld action algorithms in two-brane Randall-Sundrum model are generalized to curved branes with deSitter and Anti-deSitter geometries.

Quantum Cauchy problem in cosmology

We develop a general framework for effective equations of expectation values in quantum cosmology and pose for them the quantum Cauchy problem with no-boundary and tunneling wavefunctions. We apply this framework in the model with a big negative non-minimal coupling, which incorporates a recently proposed low energy (GUT scale) mechanism of the quantum origin of the inflationary Universe and study the effects of the quantum inflaton mode.

Effective equations in quantum cosmology

We develop a general framework for effective equations of expectation values in quantum cosmology and pose for them the quantum Cauchy problem with no-boundary and tunneling wavefunctions. Cosmological configuration space is decomposed into two sectors that give qualitatively different contributions to the radiation currents in effective equations. The field-theoretical sector of inhomogeneous modes is treated by the method of Euclidean effective action, while the quantum mechanical sector of the spatially homogeneous inflaton is handled by the technique of manifest quantum reduction to gauge invariant cosmological perturbations. We apply this framework in the model with a big negative non-minimal coupling, which incorporates a recently proposed low energy (GUT scale) mechanism of the quantum origin of the inflationary Universe and study the effects of the quantum inflaton mode.
