Photometric Stability of an EMCCD Camera at 1-s Exposures

We present the results of testing an iXonUltra 888 EMCCDcamera to determine the operating parameters for short-exposure photometry of stars. As a result of the testing, those camera modes were selected in which the temporal instability of the electron multiplication charge does not significantly affect the light curves. In addition, the photometry of the eclipsing variable star ZTFJ 0038+2030, obtained with the Zeiss-1000 telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is presented. We have shown the advantages and disadvantages of 1-s exposures for studying variable stars.

EP240801a/XRF 240801B: An X-ray Flash Detected by the Einstein Probe and Implications of its Multiband Afterglow

We present multiband observations and analysis of EP240801a, a low-energy, extremely soft gamma-ray burst (GRB) discovered on August 1, 2024 by the Einstein Probe (EP) satellite, with a weak contemporaneous signal also detected by Fermi/GBM. Optical spectroscopy of the afterglow, obtained by GTC and Keck, identified the redshift of $z = 1.6734$. EP240801a exhibits a burst duration of 148 s in X-rays and 22.3 s in gamma-rays, with X-rays leading by 80.61 s. Spectral lag analysis indicates the gamma-ray signal arrived 8.3 s earlier than the X-rays. Joint spectral fitting of EP/WXT and Fermi/GBM data yields an isotropic energy $E_{γ,\rm{iso}} = (5.57^{+0.54}_{-0.50})\times 10^{51}\,\rm{erg}$, a peak energy $E_{\rm{peak}} = 14.90^{+7.08}_{-4.71}\,\rm{keV}$, a fluence ratio $\rm S(25-50\,\rm{keV})/S(50-100\,\rm{keV}) = 1.67^{+0.74}_{-0.46}$, classifying EP240801a as an X-ray flash (XRF). The host-galaxy continuum spectrum, inferred using Prospector, was used to correct its contribution for the observed outburst optical data. Unusual early $R$-band behavior and EP/FXT observations suggest multiple components in the afterglow. Three models are considered: two-component jet model, forward-reverse shock model and forward-shock model with energy injection. Both three provide reasonable explanations. The two-component jet model and the energy injection model imply a relatively small initial energy and velocity of the jet in the line of sight, while the forward-reverse shock model remains typical. Under the two-component jet model, EP240801a may resemble GRB 221009A (BOAT) if the bright narrow beam is viewed on-axis. Therefore, EP240801a can be interpreted as an off-beam (narrow) jet or an intrinsically weak GRB jet. Our findings provide crucial clues for uncovering the origin of XRFs.

Parameters of Star Formation Regions in Galaxies NGC 3963 and NGC 7292

Results of a study of physical parameters of stellar population in star formation regions in galaxies with signs of peculiarity NGC 3963 and NGC 7292 are presented. The study was carried out based on the analysis of photometric (UBVRI bands), H-alpha and spectroscopic data obtained by the authors, using evolutionary models of stellar population. Among 157 star formation regions identified in galaxies, the young stellar population mass estimates were obtained for 16 of them and the age estimates were obtained for 15. The age of star formation regions clearly correlates with the presence of emission in the H-alpha line: HII regions in the galaxies are younger than 6-8 Myr, and the regions without gas emission are older. The studied objects are included in the version 3 of our catalogue of photometric, physical and chemical parameters of star formation regions, which includes 1667 objects in 21 galaxies. Key aspects of the technique used to estimate the physical parameters and different relations between observational and physical parameters of the young stellar population in star formation regions are discussed.

Optical Identification and Spectroscopic Redshift Measurements of 216 Galaxy Clusters from the SRG/eROSITA All-Sky Survey

We present the results of the optical identification and spectroscopic redshift measurements of 216 galaxy clusters detected in the SRG/eROSITA all-sky X-ray survey. The spectroscopic observations were performed in 2020-2023 with the 6-m BTA telescope at the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 2.5-m telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University, the 1.6-m AZT-33IK telescope at the Sayan Solar Observatory of the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the 1.5-m Russian-Turkish telescope (RTT-150) at the TÜBİTAK Observatory. For all of the galaxy clusters presented here the spectroscopic redshift measurements have been obtained for the first time. Of these, 139 galaxy clusters have been detected for the first time in the SRG/eROSITA survey and 22 galaxy clusters are at redshifts $z_{spec} \gtrsim 0.7$, including three at $z_{spec} \gtrsim 1$. Deep direct images with the rizJK filters have also been obtained for four distant galaxy clusters at $z_{spec} > 0.7$. For these observations the most massive clusters are selected. Therefore, most of the galaxy clusters presented here most likely will be included in the cosmological samples of galaxy clusters from the SRG/eROSITA survey.

SDSS J085414.02+390537.3 -- a new asynchronous polar

The asynchrony of the polar SDSS~J085414.02+390537.3 was revealed using the data of ZTF photometric survey. The light curves show a beat period $P_{beat} = 24.6 \pm 0.1$~days. During this period the system changes its brightness by $\sim 3^m$. The periodograms show power peaks at the white dwarf's rotation period $P_{spin} = 113.197 \pm 0.001$~min and orbital period $P_{orb} = 113.560 \pm 0.001$~min with the corresponding polar asynchrony $1-P_{orb}/P_{spin} = 0.3\%$. The photometric behavior of the polar indicates a change of the main accreting pole during the beat period. Based on the Zeeman splitting of the H$β$ line, an estimate of the mean magnetic field strength of the white dwarf is found to be $B = 28.5\pm 1.5$~MG. The magnetic field strength $B \approx 34$~MG near the magnetic pole was found by modeling cyclotron spectra. Doppler tomograms in the H$β$ line demonstrate the distribution of emission sources typical for polars.

Observations of the luminous red nova AT 2021biy in the nearby galaxy NGC 4631

We present an observational study of the luminous red nova (LRN) AT\,2021biy in the nearby galaxy NGC\,4631. The field of the object was routinely imaged during the pre-eruptive stage by synoptic surveys, but the transient was detected only at a few epochs from $\sim 231$\,days before maximum brightness. The LRN outburst was monitored with unprecedented cadence both photometrically and spectroscopically. AT\,2021biy shows a short-duration blue peak, with a bolometric luminosity of $\sim 1.6 \times 10^{41}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$, followed by the longest plateau among LRNe to date, with a duration of 210\,days. A late-time hump in the light curve was also observed, possibly produced by a shell-shell collision. AT\,2021biy exhibits the typical spectral evolution of LRNe. Early-time spectra are characterised by a blue continuum and prominent H emission lines. Then, the continuum becomes redder, resembling that of a K-type star with a forest of metal absorption lines during the plateau phase. Finally, late-time spectra show a very red continuum ($T_{\mathrm{BB}} \approx 2050$ K) with molecular features (e.g., TiO) resembling those of M-type stars. Spectropolarimetric analysis indicates that AT\,2021biy has local dust properties similar to those of V838\,Mon in the Milky Way Galaxy. Inspection of archival {\it Hubble Space Telescope} data taken on 2003 August 3 reveals a $\sim 20$\,\msun\ progenitor candidate with log\,$(L/{\rm L}_{\odot}) = 5.0$\,dex and $T_{\rm{eff}} = 5900$\,K at solar metallicity. The above luminosity and colour match those of a luminous yellow supergiant. Most likely, this source is a close binary, with a 17--24\,\msun\ primary component.

The TELPERION Survey for Distant [O III] Clouds around Luminous and Hibernating AGN

We present a narrowband [O III] imaging survey of 111 AGN hosts and 17 merging-galaxy systems, in search of distant extended emission-line regions (EELRs) around AGN (either extant or faded). Our data reach deeper than detection from the broadband SDSS data, and cover a wider field than some early emission-line surveys used to study extended structure around AGN. Spectroscopic followup confirms two new distant AGN-ionized clouds, in the merging systems NGC 235 and NGC 5514, projected at 26 and 75 kpc from the nuclei (respectively). We also recover the previously-known region in NGC 7252. These results strengthen the connection between EELRs and tidal features; kinematically quiescent distant EELRs are virtually always photoionized tidal debris. We see them in ~10% of the galaxies in our sample with tidal tails. Energy budgets suggest that the AGN in NGC 5514 has faded by >3 times during the extra light-travel time ~250,000 years from the nucleus to the cloud and then to the observer; strong shock emission in outflows masks the optical signature of the AGN. For NGC 235 our data are consistent with but do not unequivocally require variation over ~85,000 years. In addition to these very distant ionized clouds, luminous and extensive line emission within four galaxies - IC 1481, ESO 362-G08, NGC 5514, and NGC 7679. IC 1481 shows apparent ionization cones, a rare combination with its LINER AGN spectrum. In NGC 5514, we measure a 7-kpc shell expanding at ~370 km/s west of the nucleus.

XMP gas-rich dwarfs in nearby voids: results of BTA spectroscopy

We present the second part of results of the on-going project of searching for and studying eXtremely Metal-Poor (XMP, adopted as those with Z(gas) <~ Zo/30, or with 12+log(O/H) <~ 7.21~dex) very gas-rich blue dwarfs in voids. They were first identified in course of the 'unbiased' study of galaxy population in the nearby Lynx-Cancer void. These very rare and unusual galaxies seem to be the best proxies of so-called Very Young Galaxies (VYGs) defined recently in model simulations by Tweed et al. To date, for 16 preselected void XMP candidates, we obtained with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) spectra suitable for determination of O/H. For majority of the observed galaxies, the principal line [OIII]4363 used for the direct classical T_e method of O/H determination, is undetected. Therefore, to estimate O/H, we use a new 'Strong-lines' method by Izotov et al. This appears the most accurate empirical O/H estimator for the range of 12+log(O/H) < 7.4-7.5. For higher O/H objects, we use the semi-empirical method by Izotov and Thuan with our modification accounting for variance of the excitation parameter O32. Six of those 16 candidates are found to be the confident XMP dwarfs. In addition, eight studied galaxies are somewhat less metal-poor, with 12+log(O/H) = 7.24-7.33. They also can fall into the category of VYG candidates. With account of the recently published by us and previously known (9 prototype galaxies) XMP gas-rich void objects, the new findings increase the number of this type galaxies to the total of 19.

Ionized gas in the NGC 3077 galaxy

The nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 3077 is known for its peculiar morphology, which includes numerous dust lanes and emission-line regions. The interstellar medium in this galaxy is subject to several perturbing factors. These are primarily the central starburst and tidal structures in the M 81 group. We present a comprehensive study of the state of ionization, kinematics, and chemical composition of ionized gas in NGC 3077, including both star-forming regions and diffuse ionized gas (DIG) at the periphery. We study gas motions in the H$α$ line via high-resolution ($R\approx15\,000$) 3D spectroscopy with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer installed into SCORPIO-2 instrument attached to the 6-m telescope of the SAO RAS. Images in the main optical emission lines were acquired with MaNGaL photometer with a tunable filter at the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasian Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU. We also used SCORPIO-2 to perform long-slit spectroscopy of the galaxy with a resolution of $R\approx1\,000$. Our estimate of the gas metallicity, $Z=0.6Z_\odot$, is significantly lower than the earlier determination, but agrees with the "luminosity--metallicity" dependence. Spatially resolved diagnostic diagrams of the emission-line ratios do not show correlations between the gas ionization state and its velocity dispersion, and this is most likely due to strong ionization by young stars, whereas the contribution of shocks to the excitation of emission lines is less important. We also studied the locations of multicomponent H$α$ profiles and provide arguments suggesting that they are mostly associated with individual kinematic components along the line of sight and not with expanding shells as it was believed earlier. We also observe there a combination of wind outflow from star-forming regions and accretion from interstellar gas clouds in the M 81 group.

Extended Gaseous Disk in the S0 galaxy NGC 4143

We present our results of the spectroscopic study of the lenticular galaxy NGC 4143 - an outskirt member of the Ursa Major cluster. Using the observations at the 6-m SAO RAS telescope with the SCORPIO-2 spectrograph and also the archive data of panoramic spectroscopy with the SAURON IFU at the WHT, we have detected an extended inclined gaseous disk which is traced up to a distance of about 3.5 kpc from the center, with a spin approximately opposite to the spin of the stellar disk. The galaxy images in the H-alpha and [NII]6583 emission lines obtained at the 2.5-m CMO SAI MSU telescope with the MaNGaL instrument have shown that the emission lines are excited by a shock wave. A spiral structure that is absent in the stellar disk of the galaxy is clearly seen in the brightness distribution of ionized-gas lines (H-alpha and [NII] from the MaNGaL data and [OIII] from the SAURON data). A complex analysis of both the Lick index distribution along the radius and of the integrated colors, including the ultraviolet measurements with the GALEX space telescope and the near-infrared measurements with the WISE space telescope, has shown that there has been no star formation in the galaxy, perhaps, for the last 10 Gyr. Thus, the recent external-gas accretion detected in NGC 4143 from its kinematics, was not accompanied by star formation, probably, due to an inclined direction of the gas inflow onto the disk.

Mapper of Narrow Galaxy Lines (MaNGaL): new tunable filter imager for Caucasian telescopes

We described the design and operation principles of a new tunable-filter photometer developed for the 1-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the 2.5-m telescope of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of the Moscow State University. The instrument is mounted on the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer operating in the tunable-filter mode in the spectral range of 460-800 nm with a typical spectral resolution of about 1.3 nm. It allows one to create images of galactic and extragalactic nebulae in the emission lines having different excitation conditions and to carry out diagnostics of the gas ionization state. The main steps of observations, data calibration, and reduction are illustrated by examples of different emission-line objects: galactic HII regions, planetary nebulae, active galaxies with extended filaments, starburst galaxies, and Perseus galaxy cluster.

Diagnostics of ionized gas in galaxies with the "BPT--radial velocity dispersion" relation

In order to study the state of gas in galaxies, diagrams of the relation of optical emission line fluxes are used allowing one to separate main ionization sources: young stars in the H II regions, active galactic nuclei, and shock waves. In the intermediate cases, when the contributions of radiation from OB stars and from shock waves mix, identification becomes uncertain, and the issue remains unresolved on what determines the observed state of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) including the one on large distances from the galactic plane. Adding of an extra parameter - the gas line-of-sight velocity dispersion - to classical diagnostic diagrams helps to find a solution. In the present paper, we analyze the observed data for several nearby galaxies: for UGC 10043 with the galactic wind, for the star forming dwarf galaxies VII Zw 403 and Mrk 35, for the galaxy Arp 212 with a polar ring. The data on the velocity dispersion are obtained at the 6-m SAO RAS telescope with the Fabry-Perot scanning interferometer, the information on the relation of main emission-line fluxes - from the published results of the integral-field spectroscopy (the CALIFA survey and the MPFS spectrograph). A positive correlation between the radial velocity dispersion and the contribution of shock excitation to gas ionization are observed. In particular, in studying Arp 212, "BPT-sigma relation" allowed us to confirm the assumption on a direct collision of gaseous clouds on the inclined orbits with the main disk of the galaxy.

Star formation driven galactic winds in UGC 10043

We study the galactic wind in the edge-on spiral galaxy UGC 10043 with the combination of the CALIFA integral field spectroscopy data, scanning Fabry-Perot interferometry (FPI), and multiband photometry. We detect ionized gas in the extraplanar regions reaching a relatively high distance, up to ~ 4 kpc above the galactic disk. The ionized gas line ratios ([N ii]/Ha, [S ii]/Ha and [O i]/Ha) present an enhancement along the semi minor axis, in contrast with the values found at the disk, where they are compatible with ionization due to H ii-regions. These differences, together with the biconic symmetry of the extra-planar ionized structure, makes UGC 10043 a clear candidate for a galaxy with gas outflows ionizated by shocks. From the comparison of shock models with the observed line ratios, and the kinematics observed from the FPI data, we constrain the physical properties of the observed outflow. The data are compatible with a velocity increase of the gas along the extraplanar distances up to < 400 km/s and the preshock density decreasing in the same direction. We also observe a discrepancy in the SFR estimated based on Ha (0.36 Msun/yr ) and the estimated with the CIGALE code, being the latter 5 times larger. Nevertheless, this SFR is still not enough to drive the observed galactic wind if we do not take into account the filling factor. We stress that the combination of the three techniques of observation with models is a powerful tool to explore galactic winds in the Local Universe.

Galactic Wind in NGC 4460: New Observations

NGC4460 is an isolated lenticular galaxy, in which galactic wind has been earlier discovered as a gas outflow associated with circumnuclear regions of star formation. Using the results of observations in the Halpha line with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer on the SAO RAS 6-m telescope, we studied the kinematics of the ionized gas in this galaxy. The parameters of gas outflow from the plane of the galactic disk were refined within a simple geometric model. We show that it is impossible to characterize the wind by a fixed velocity value. Characteristic outflow velocities are within 30..80 km/s , and they are insufficient to make the swept-out matter ultimately leave the galaxy.
