$C^\ast$-simple groups without free subgroups

We construct first examples of non-trivial groups without non-cyclic free subgroups whose reduced $C^\ast$-algebra is simple and has unique trace. This answers a question of de la Harpe. Both torsion and torsion free examples are provided. In particular, we show that the reduced $C^\ast$-algebra of the free Burnside group $B(m,n)$ of rank $m\ge 2$ and any sufficiently large odd exponent $n$ is simple and has unique trace.

On topologizable and non-topologizable groups

A group $G$ is called hereditarily non-topologizable if, for every $H\le G$, no quotient of $H$ admits a non-discrete Hausdorff topology. We construct first examples of infinite hereditarily non-topologizable groups. This allows us to prove that c-compactness does not imply compactness for topological groups. We also answer several other open questions about c-compact groups asked by Dikranjan and Uspenskij. On the other hand, we suggest a method of constructing topologizable groups based on generic properties in the space of marked $k$-generated groups. As an application, we show that there exist non-discrete quasi-cyclic groups of finite exponent; this answers a question of Morris and Obraztsov.

Small cancellations over relatively hyperbolic groups and embedding theorems

We generalize the small cancellation theory over hyperbolic groups developed by Olshanskii to the case of relatively hyperbolic groups. This allows us to construct infinite finitely generated groups with exactly $n$ conjugacy classes for every $n\ge 2$. In particular, we give the affirmative answer to the well--known question of the existence of a finitely generated group $G$ other than $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z$ such that all nontrivial elements of $G$ are conjugate.

Lacunary hyperbolic groups

We call a finitely generated group lacunary hyperbolic if one of its asymptotic cones is an R-tree. We characterize lacunary hyperbolic groups as direct limits of Gromov hyperbolic groups satisfying certain restrictions on the hyperbolicity constants and injectivity radii. Using central extensions of lacunary hyperbolic groups, we solve a problem of Gromov by constructing a group whose asymptotic cone C has countable but non-trivial fundamental group (in fact C is homeomorphic to the direct product of a tree and a circle, so π_1(C)=Z). We show that the class of lacunary hyperbolic groups contains elementary amenable groups, groups with all proper subgroups cyclic, and torsion groups. This allows us to solve two problems of Drutu and Sapir, and a problem of Kleiner about groups with cut-points in their asymptotic cones. We also construct a finitely generated group whose divergence function is not linear but is arbitrarily close to being linear. This answers a question of Behrstock.

Large groups and their periodic quotients

We first give a short group theoretic proof of the following result of Lackenby. If $G$ is a large group, $H$ is a finite index subgroup of $G$ admitting an epimorphism onto a non--cyclic free group, and $g$ is an element of $H$, then the quotient of $G$ by the normal subgroup generated by $g^n$ is large for all but finitely many $n\in \mathbb Z$. In the second part of this note we use similar methods to show that for every infinite sequence of primes $(p_1, p_2, ...)$, there exists an infinite finitely generated periodic group $Q$ with descending normal series $Q=Q_0\rhd Q_1\rhd ... $, such that $\bigcap_i Q_i=\{1\} $ and $Q_{i-1}/Q_i$ is either trivial or abelian of exponent $p_i$.

Asymptotic dimension of relatively hyperbolic groups

Suppose that a finitely generated group $G$ is hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups $\{H_1, ..., H_m\} $. We prove that if each of the subgroups $H_1, ..., H_m$ has finite asymptotic dimension, then asymptotic dimension of $G$ is also finite.

Fundamental groups of asymptotic cones

We show that for any metric space $M$ satisfying certain natural conditions, there is a finitely generated group $G$, an ultrafilter $ω$, and an isometric embedding $ι$ of $M$ to the asymptotic cone ${\rm Cone}_ω(G)$ such that the induced homomorphism $ι^ \ast :π_1(M)\to π_1({\rm Cone}_ω(G))$ is injective. In particular, we prove that any countable group can be embedded into a fundamental group of an asymptotic cone of a finitely generated group.

Elementary subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups and bounded generation

Let $G$ be a group hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups $\{H_λ,λ\in Λ\} $. We say that a subgroup $Q\le G$ is hyperbolically embedded into $G$, if $G$ is hyperbolic relative to $\{H_λ,λ\in Λ\} \cup \{Q\} $. In this paper we obtain a characterization of hyperbolically embedded subgroups. In particular, we show that if an element $g\in G$ has infinite order and is not conjugate to an element of $H_λ$, $λ\in Λ$, then the (unique) maximal elementary subgroup contained $g$ is hyperbolically embedded into $G$. This allows to prove that if $G$ is boundedly generated, then $G$ is elementary or $H_λ=G$ for some $λ\in Λ$.

Uniform non--amenability of free Burnside groups

We show that free Burnside groups of sufficiently large odd exponent are non--amenable in a certain strong sense, more precisely, their left regular representations are isolated from the trivial representation uniformly on finite generating sets. This result is applied to the solution of a strong version of the von Neumann -- Day problem concerning amenability of groups without non--abelian free subgroups. As another consequence, we obtain that the above--mentioned groups are of uniform exponential growth.

Weak hyperbolicity and free constructions

The aim of this note is to show that weak relative hyperbolicity of a group relative to a subgroup (or relative hyperbolicity in the sense of Farb) does not imply any natural analogues of some well-known algebraic properties of ordinary hyperbolic groups. Our main tools are combination theorems for weakly relatively hyperbolic groups.

Algebraic entropy of elementary amenable groups

We prove that any finitely generated elementary amenable group of zero (algebraic) entropy contains a nilpotent subgroup of finite index or, equivalently, any finitely generated elementary amenable group of exponential growth is of uniformly exponential growth. We also show that 0 is an accumulation point of the set of entropies of elementary amenable groups.
