Fluctuations and correlations in scattering on a resonance coupled to a chaotic background

We discuss and briefly overview recent progress with studying fluctuations in scattering on a resonance state coupled to the background of many chaotic states. Such a problem arises naturally, e.g., when dealing with wave propagation in the presence of a complex environment. Using a statistical model based on random matrix theory, we obtain a number of nonperturbative results for various statistics of scattering characteristics. This includes the joint and marginal distributions of the reflection and transmission intensities and phases, which are derived exactly at arbitrary coupling to the background with finite absorption. The intensities and phases are found to exhibit highly non-trivial statistical correlations, which remain essential even in the limit of strong absorption. In the latter case, we also consider the relevant approximations and their accuracy. As an application, we briefly discuss the statistics of the phase rigidity (or mode complexness) in such a scattering situation.

Different types of critical behavior in conservatively coupled Hénon maps

We study the dynamics of two conservatively coupled Hénon maps at different levels of dissipation. It is shown that the decrease of dissipation leads to changes in the parameter plane structure and scenarios of transition to chaos comparing with the case of infinitely strong dissipation. Particularly, the Feigenbaum line becomes divided into several fragments. Some of these fragments have critical points of different types, namely of C and H type, as their terminal points. Also the mechanisms of formation of these Feigenbaum line ruptures are described.

Experimental Width Shift Distribution: A Test of Nonorthogonality for Local and Global Perturbations

The change of resonance widths in an open system under a perturbation of its interior has been recently introduced by Fyodorov and Savin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 184101 (2012)] as a sensitive indicator of the nonorthogonality of resonance states. We experimentally study universal statistics of this quantity in weakly open two-dimensional microwave cavities and reverberation chambers realizing scalar and electromagnetic vector fields, respectively. We consider global as well as local perturbations, and also extend the theory to treat the latter case. The influence of the perturbation type on the width shift distribution is more pronounced for many-channel systems. We compare the theory to experimental results for one and two attached antennas and to numerical simulations with higher channel numbers, observing a good agreement in all cases.

Probing eigenfunction nonorthogonality by parametric shifts of resonance widths

Recently, it has been shown that the change of resonance widths in an open system under a perturbation of its interior is a sensitive indicator of the nonorthogonality of resonance states. We apply this measure to quantify parametric motion of the resonances. In particular, a strong redistribution of the widths is linked with the maximal degree of nonorthogonality. Then for weakly open chaotic systems we discuss the effect of spectral rigidity on the statistical properties of the parametric width shifts, and derive the distribution of the latter in a picket-fence model with equidistant spectrum.

The coexistence and evolution of attractors in the web map with weak dissipation

The dynamics of the web map with weak linear dissipation is studied. The evolution of the coexisting attractors and the structure of their basins while changing the dissipation and nonlinearity are revealed. It is shown that the structure of the basins remains the same when the dissipation and nonlinearity changes simultaneously.

Statistics of resonance width shifts as a signature of eigenfunction non-orthogonality

We consider an open (scattering) quantum system under the action of a perturbation of its closed counterpart. It is demonstrated that the resulting shift of resonance widths is a sensitive indicator of the non-orthogonality of resonance wavefunctions, being zero only if those were orthogonal. Focusing further on chaotic systems, we employ random matrix theory to introduce a new type of parametric statistics in open systems, and derive the distribution of the resonance width shifts in the regime of weak coupling to the continuum.

Microwave fidelity studies by varying antenna coupling

The fidelity decay in a microwave billiard is considered, where the coupling to an attached antenna is varied. The resulting quantity, coupling fidelity, is experimentally studied for three different terminators of the varied antenna: a hard wall reflection, an open wall reflection, and a 50 Ohm load, corresponding to a totally open channel. The model description in terms of an effective Hamiltonian with a complex coupling constant is given. Quantitative agreement is found with the theory obtained from a modified VWZ approach [Verbaarschot et al, Phys. Rep. 129, 367 (1985)].

Systematic approach to statistics of conductance and shot-noise in chaotic cavities

Applying random matrix theory to quantum transport in chaotic cavities, we develop a novel approach to computation of the moments of the conductance and shot-noise (including their joint moments) of arbitrary order and at any number of open channels. The method is based on the Selberg integral theory combined with the theory of symmetric functions and is applicable equally well for systems with and without time-reversal symmetry. We also compute higher-order cumulants and perform their detailed analysis. In particular, we establish an explicit form of the leading asymptotic of the cumulants in the limit of the large channel numbers. We derive further a general Pfaffian representation for the corresponding distribution functions. The Edgeworth expansion based on the first four cumulants is found to reproduce fairly accurately the distribution functions in the bulk even for a small number of channels. As the latter increases, the distributions become Gaussian-like in the bulk but are always characterized by a power-law dependence near their edges of support. Such asymptotics are determined exactly up to linear order in distances from the edges, including the corresponding constants.

Nonlinear statistics of quantum transport in chaotic cavities

In the framework of the random matrix approach, we apply the theory of Selberg's integral to problems of quantum transport in chaotic cavities. All the moments of transmission eigenvalues are calculated analytically up to the fourth order. As a result, we derive exact explicit expressions for the skewness and kurtosis of the conductance and transmitted charge as well as for the variance of the shot-noise power in chaotic cavities. The obtained results are generally valid at arbitrary numbers of propagating channels in the two attached leads. In the particular limit of large (and equal) channel numbers, the shot-noise variance attends the universal value 1/(64β) that determines a universal Gaussian statistics of shot-noise fluctuations in this case.

Statistics of conductance and shot-noise power for chaotic cavities

We report on an analytical study of the statistics of conductance, $g$, and shot-noise power, $p$, for a chaotic cavity with arbitrary numbers $N_{1,2}$ of channels in two leads and symmetry parameter $β= 1,2,4$. With the theory of Selberg's integral the first four cumulants of $g$ and first two cumulants of $p$ are calculated explicitly. We give analytical expressions for the conductance and shot-noise distributions and determine their exact asymptotics near the edges up to linear order in distances from the edges. For $0<g<1$ a power law for the conductance distribution is exact. All results are also consistent with numerical simulations.

Inhomogeneous losses and complexness of wave functions in chaotic cavities

In a two-dimensional microwave chaotic cavity ohmic losses located at the contour of the cavity result in different broadenings of different modes. We provide an analytic description and establish the link between such an inhomogeneous damping and the complex (non-real) character of biorthogonal wave functions. This substantiates the corresponding recent experimental findings of Barthelemy et al. [Europhys. Lett. 70, 162 (2005)].

On some properties of nearly conservative dynamics of Ikeda map and its relation with the conservative case

The behavior of the well-known Ikeda map with very weak dissipation (so called nearly conservative case) is investigated. The changes in the bifurcation structure of the parameter plane while decreasing the dissipation are revealed. It is shown that when the dissipation is very weak the system demonstrates an "intermediate" type of dynamics combining the peculiarities of conservative and dissipative dynamics. The correspondence between the trajectories in the phase space in conservative case and the transformations of the set of initial conditions in the nearly conservative case is revealed. The dramatic increase of number of coexisting low-period attractors and the extraordinary growth of the transient time while the dissipation decreases have been revealed. The method of plotting a bifurcation trees for the set of initial conditions has been used to classify existing attractors by it's structure. Also it was shown that most of coexisting attractors are destroyed by rather small external noise, and the transient time in noisy driven systems increases still more. The new method of two-parameter analysis of conservative systems was proposed.

Shot noise in chaotic cavities with an arbitrary number of open channels

Using the random matrix approach, we calculate analytically the average shot-noise power in a chaotic cavity at an arbitrary number of propagating modes (channels) in each of the two attached leads. A simple relationship between this quantity, the average conductance and the conductance variance is found. The dependence of the Fano factor on the channel number is considered in detail.

Scattering, reflection and impedance of waves in chaotic and disordered systems with absorption

We review recent progress in analysing wave scattering in systems with both intrinsic chaos and/or disorder and internal losses, when the scattering matrix is no longer unitary. By mapping the problem onto a nonlinear supersymmetric sigma-model, we are able to derive closed form analytic expressions for the distribution of reflection probability in a generic disordered system. One of the most important properties resulting from such an analysis is statistical independence between the phase and the modulus of the reflection amplitude in every perfectly open channel. The developed theory has far-reaching consequences for many quantities of interest, including local Green functions and time delays. In particular, we point out the role played by absorption as a sensitive indicator of mechanisms behind the Anderson localisation transition. We also provide a random-matrix-based analysis of S-matrix and impedance correlations for various symmetry classes as well as the distribution of transmitted power for systems with broken time-reversal invariance, completing previous works on the subject. The results can be applied, in particular, to the experimentally accessible impedance and reflection in a microwave or ultrasonic cavity attached to a system of antennas.

Universal statistics of the local Green's function in quantum chaotic systems with absorption

We establish a general relation between the statistics of the local Green's function for systems with chaotic wave scattering and a uniform energy loss (absorption) and its two-point correlation function for the same system without absorption. Within the random matrix approach this kind of a fluctuation dissipation relation allows us to derive the explicit analytical expression for the joint distribution function of the real and imaginary parts of the local Green function for all symmetry classes as well as at an arbitrary degree of the time-reversal symmetry breaking in the system. The outstanding problem of the orthogonal symmetry is further reduced to simple quadratures. The results can be applied, in particular, to the experimentally accessible impedance and reflection in a microwave cavity attached to a single-mode antenna.

Correlation functions of impedance and scattering matrix elements in chaotic absorbing cavities

Wave scattering in chaotic systems with a uniform energy loss (absorption) is considered. Within the random matrix approach we calculate exactly the energy correlation functions of different matrix elements of impedance or scattering matrices for systems with preserved or broken time-reversal symmetry. The obtained results are valid at any number of arbitrary open scattering channels and arbitrary absorption. Elastic enhancement factors (defined through the ratio of the corresponding variance in reflection to that in transmission) are also discussed.
