Phase Synchronization in Unidirectionally Coupled Ikeda Time-delay Systems

Phase synchronization in unidirectionally coupled Ikeda time-delay systems exhibiting non-phase-coherent hyperchaotic attractors of complex topology with highly interwoven trajectories is studied. It is shown that in this set of coupled systems phase synchronization (PS) does exist in a range of the coupling strength which is preceded by a transition regime (approximate PS) and a nonsynchronous regime. However, exact generalized synchronization does not seem to occur in the coupled Ikeda systems (for the range of parameters we have studied) even for large coupling strength, in contrast to our earlier studies in coupled piecewise-linear and Mackey-Glass systems \cite{dvskml2006,dvskml2008}. The above transitions are characterized in terms of recurrence based indices, namely generalized autocorrelation function $P(t)$, correlation of probability of recurrence (CPR), joint probability of recurrence (JPR) and similarity of probability of recurrence (SPR). The existence of phase synchronization is also further confirmed by typical transitions in the Lyapunov exponents of the coupled Ikeda time-delay systems and also using the concept of localized sets.

Transition from phase to generalized synchronization in time-delay systems

The notion of phase synchronization in time-delay systems, exhibiting highly non-phase-coherent attractors, has not been realized yet even though it has been well studied in chaotic dynamical systems without delay. We report the identification of phase synchronization in coupled nonidentical piece-wise linear and in coupled Mackey-Glass time-delay systems with highly non-phase-coherent regimes. We show that there is a transition from non-synchronized behavior to phase and then to generalized synchronization as a function of coupling strength. We have introduced a transformation to capture the phase of the non-phase coherent attractors, which works equally well for both the time-delay systems. The instantaneous phases of the above coupled systems calculated from the transformed attractors satisfy both the phase and mean frequency locking conditions. These transitions are also characterized in terms of recurrence based indices, namely generalized autocorrelation function $P(t)$, correlation of probability of recurrence (CPR), joint probability of recurrence (JPR) and similarity of probability of recurrence (SPR). We have quantified the different synchronization regimes in terms of these indices. The existence of phase synchronization is also characterized by typical transitions in the Lyapunov exponents of the coupled time-delay systems.

Intermittency transition to generalized synchronization in coupled time-delay systems

In this paper, we report the nature of transition to generalized synchronization (GS) in a system of two coupled scalar piecewise linear time-delay systems using the auxiliary system approach. We demonstrate that the transition to GS occurs via on-off intermittency route and also it exhibits characteristically distinct behaviors for different coupling configurations. In particular, the intermittency transition occurs in a rather broad range of coupling strength for error feedback coupling configuration and in a narrow range of coupling strength for direct feedback coupling configuration. It is also shown that the intermittent dynamics displays periodic bursts of period equal to the delay time of the response system in the former case, while they occur in random time intervals of finite duration in the latter case. The robustness of these transitions with system parameters and delay times has also been studied for both linear and nonlinear coupling configurations. The results are corroborated analytically by suitable stability conditions for asymptotically stable synchronized states and numerically by the probability of synchronization and by the transition of \emph{sub}Lyapunov exponents of the coupled time-delay systems. We have also indicated the reason behind these distinct transitions by referring to unstable periodic orbit theory of intermittency synchronization in low-dimensional systems.

Delay time modulation induced oscillating synchronization and intermittent anticipatory/lag and complete synchronizations in time-delay nonlinear dynamical systems

Existence of a new type of oscillating synchronization that oscillates between three different types of synchronizations (anticipatory, complete and lag synchronizations) is identified in unidirectionally coupled nonlinear time-delay systems having two different time-delays, that is feedback delay with a periodic delay time modulation and a constant coupling delay. Intermittent anticipatory, intermittent lag and complete synchronizations are shown to exist in the same system with identical delay time modulations in both the delays. The transition from anticipatory to complete synchronization and from complete to lag synchronization as a function of coupling delay with suitable stability condition is discussed. The intermittent anticipatory and lag synchronizations are characterized by the minimum of similarity functions and the intermittent behavior is characterized by a universal asymptotic $-{3/2}$ power law distribution. It is also shown that the delay time carved out of the trajectories of the time-delay system with periodic delay time modulation cannot be estimated using conventional methods, thereby reducing the possibility of decoding the message by phase space reconstruction.

Experimental realization of strange nonchaotic attractors in a quasiperiodically forced electronic circuit

We have identified the three prominent routes, namely Heagy-Hammel, fractalization and intermittency routes, and their mechanisms for the birth of strange nonchaotic attractors (SNAs) in a quasiperiodically forced electronic system constructed using a negative conductance series LCR circuit with a diode both numerically and experimentally. The birth of SNAs by these three routes is verified from both experimental and their corresponding numerical data by maximal Lyapunov exponents, and their variance, Poincaré maps, Fourier amplitude spectrum, spectral distribution function and finite-time Lyapunov exponents. Although these three routes have been identified numerically in different dynamical systems, the experimental observation of all these mechanisms is reported for the first time to our knowledge and that too in a single second order electronic circuit.

Phase synchronization in time-delay systems

Though the notion of phase synchronization has been well studied in chaotic dynamical systems without delay, it has not been realized yet in chaotic time-delay systems exhibiting non-phase coherent hyperchaotic attractors. In this article we report the first identification of phase synchronization in coupled time-delay systems exhibiting hyperchaotic attractor. We show that there is a transition from non-synchronized behavior to phase and then to generalized synchronization as a function of coupling strength. These transitions are characterized by recurrence quantification analysis, by phase differences based on a new transformation of the attractors and also by the changes in the Lyapunov exponents. We have found these transitions in coupled piece-wise linear and in Mackey-Glass time-delay systems.

Existence of anticipatory, complete and lag synchronizations in time-delay systems

Existence of different kinds of synchronizations, namely anticipatory, complete and lag type synchronizations (both exact and approximate), are shown to be possible in time-delay coupled piecewise linear systems. We deduce stability condition for synchronization of such unidirectionally coupled systems following Krasovskii-Lyapunov theory. Transition from anticipatory to lag synchronization via complete synchronization as a function of coupling delay is discussed. The existence of exact synchronization is preceded by a region of approximate synchronization from desynchronized state as a function of a system parameter, whose value determines the stability condition for synchronization. The results are corroborated by the nature of similarity functions. A new type of oscillating synchronization that oscillates between anticipatory, complete and lag synchronization, is identified as a consequence of delay time modulation with suitable stability condition.

Transition from anticipatory to lag synchronization via complete synchronization in time-delay systems

The existence of anticipatory, complete and lag synchronization in a single system having two different time-delays, that is feedback delay $τ_1$ and coupling delay $τ_2$, is identified. The transition from anticipatory to complete synchronization and from complete to lag synchronization as a function of coupling delay $τ_2$ with suitable stability condition is discussed. The existence of anticipatory and lag synchronization is characterized both by the minimum of similarity function and the transition from on-off intermittency to periodic structure in laminar phase distribution.

Bifurcations and Chaos in Time Delayed Piecewise Linear Dynamical Systems

We reinvestigate the dynamical behavior of a first order scalar nonlinear delay differential equation with piecewise linearity and identify several interesting features in the nature of bifurcations and chaos associated with it as a function of the delay time and external forcing parameters. In particular, we point out that the fixed point solution exhibits a stability island in the two parameter space of time delay and strength of nonlinearity. Significant role played by transients in attaining steady state solutions is pointed out. Various routes to chaos and existence of hyperchaos even for low values of time delay which is evidenced by multiple positive Lyapunov exponents are brought out. The study is extended to the case of two coupled systems, one with delay and the other one without delay.
