Anomaly inflow for local boundary conditions

We study the $η$-invariant of a Dirac operator on a manifold with boundary subject to local boundary conditions with the help of heat kernel methods. In even dimensions, we relate this invariant to $η$-invariants of a boundary Dirac operator, while in odd dimension, it is expressed through the index of boundary operators. We stress the necessity of the strong ellipticity condition for the applicability of our methods. We show that the Witten--Yonekura boundary conditions are not strongly elliptic, though they are very close to strongly elliptic ones.

Heat Kernel, Spectral Functions and Anomalies in Weyl Semimetals

Being motivated by applications to the physics of Weyl semimetals we study spectral geometry of Dirac operator with an abelian gauge field and an axial vector field. We impose chiral bag boundary conditions with variable chiral phase $θ$ on the fermions. We establish main properties of the spectral functions which ensure applicability of the $ζ$ function regularization and of the usual heat kernel formulae for chiral and parity anomalies. We develop computational methods, including a perturbation expansion for the heat kernel. We show that the terms in both anomalies which include electromagnetic potential are independent of $θ$.

Atiyah-Patodi-Singer Index Theorem for Domain Walls

We consider the index of a Dirac operator on a compact even dimensional manifold with a domain wall. The latter is defined as a co-dimension one submanifold where the connection jumps. We formulate and prove an analog of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem that relates the index to the bulk integral of Pontryagin density and $η$-invariants of auxiliary Dirac operators on the domain wall. Thus the index is expressed through the global chiral anomaly in the volume and the parity anomaly on the wall.

Renormalization on noncommutative torus

We study a self-interacting scalar $φ^4$ theory on the $d$-dimensional noncommutative torus. We determine, for the particular cases $d=2$ and $d=4$, the counterterms required by one-loop renormalization. We discuss higher loops in two dimensions and two-loop contributions to the self-energy in four dimensions. Our analysis points toward the absence of any problems related to the UV/IR mixing and thus to renormalizability of the theory. However, we find another potentially troubling phenomenon which is a wild behavior of the two-point amplitude as a function of the noncommutativity matrix $θ$.

Nonassociative Weyl star products

Deformation quantization is a formal deformation of the algebra of smooth functions on some manifold. In the classical setting, the Poisson bracket serves as an initial conditions, while the associativity allows to proceed to higher orders. Some applications to string theory require deformation in the direction of a quasi-Poisson bracket (that does not satisfy the Jacobi identity). This initial condition is incompatible with associativity, it is quite unclear which restrictions can be imposed on the deformation. We show that for any quasi-Poisson bracket the deformation quantization exists and is essentially unique if one requires (weak) hermiticity and the Weyl condition. We also propose an iterative procedure that allows to compute the star product up to any desired order.

A Note on Quantum Compactons

Compactons are solutions of the equations of motion that behave trivially outside a compact region. In general, the operators describing quantum fluctuations above compactons have singularities. However, we show that despite these singularities the quantum theory is well defined. As an example, we calculate the one-loop mass shift of a compacton in a model described by a single real scalar field.

Charge density and conductivity of disordered Berry-Mondragon graphene nanoribbons

We consider gated graphene nanoribbons subject to Berry-Mondragon boundary conditions in the presence of weak impurities. Using field--theoretical methods, we calculate the density of charge carriers (and, thus, the quantum capacitance) as well as the optical and DC conductivities at zero temperature. We discuss in detail their dependence on the gate (chemical) potential, and reveal a non-linear behaviour induced by the quantization of the transversal momentum.

Holographic duals to Poisson sigma models and noncommutative quantum mechanics

Poisson sigma models are a very rich class of two-dimensional theories that includes, in particular, all 2D dilaton gravities. By using the Hamiltonian reduction method, we show that a Poisson sigma model (with a sufficiently well-behaving Poisson tensor) on a finite cylinder is equivalent to a noncommutative quantum mechanics for the boundary data.

Faraday rotation in graphene

We study magneto--optical properties of monolayer graphene by means of quantum field theory methods in the framework of the Dirac model. We reveal a good agreement between the Dirac model and a recent experiment on giant Faraday rotation in cyclotron resonance. We also predict other regimes when the effects are well pronounced. The general dependence of the Faraday rotation and absorption on various parameters of samples is revealed both for suspended and epitaxial graphene.

Quantum Field Theory in Graphene

This is a short non-technical introduction to applications of the Quantum Field Theory methods to graphene. We derive the Dirac model from the tight binding model and describe calculations of the polarization operator (conductivity). Later on, we use this quantity to describe the Quantum Hall Effect, light absorption by graphene, the Faraday effect, and the Casimir interaction.

Noncommutative magnetic moment of charged particles

It has been argued, that in noncommutative field theories sizes of physical objects cannot be taken smaller than an elementary length related to noncommutativity parameters. By gauge-covariantly extending field equations of noncommutative U(1)_*-theory to the presence of external sources, we find electric and magnetic fields produces by an extended charge. We find that such a charge, apart from being an ordinary electric monopole, is also a magnetic dipole. By writing off the existing experimental clearance in the value of the lepton magnetic moments for the present effect, we get the bound on noncommutativity at the level of 10^4 TeV.

Classical Noncommutative Electrodynamics with External Source

In a $U(1)_{\star}$-noncommutative (NC) gauge field theory we extend the Seiberg-Witten (SW) map to include the (gauge-invariance-violating) external current and formulate - to the first order in the NC parameter - gauge-covariant classical field equations. We find solutions to these equations in the vacuum and in an external magnetic field, when the 4-current is a static electric charge of a finite size $a$, restricted from below by the elementary length. We impose extra boundary conditions, which we use to rule out all singularities, $1/r$ included, from the solutions. The static charge proves to be a magnetic dipole, with its magnetic moment being inversely proportional to its size $a$. The external magnetic field modifies the long-range Coulomb field and some electromagnetic form-factors. We also analyze the ambiguity in the SW map and show that at least to the order studied here it is equivalent to the ambiguity of adding a homogeneous solution to the current-conservation equation.

Polarization rotation and Casimir effect in suspended graphene films

The low-energy quasi-excitations in graphene are known to be described as Dirac fermions in 2+1 dimensions. Adopting field-theoretical approach we investigate the interaction of these quasi-particles with 3+1 dimensional electromagnetic field focusing on the optical properties of suspended graphene layers and their Casimir interaction with ideal conductor. The magnitude of predicted effects (the rotation of polarization of light and the Casimir force) appears to be well within modern experimental capabilities.

Tensor calculus on noncommutative spaces

It is well known that for a given Poisson structure one has infinitely many star products related through the Kontsevich gauge transformations. These gauge transformations have an infinite functional dimension (i.e., correspond to an infinite number of degrees of freedom per point of the base manifold). We show that on a symplectic manifold this freedom may be almost completely eliminated if one extends the star product to all tensor fields in a covariant way and impose some natural conditions on the tensor algebra. The remaining ambiguity either correspond to constant renormalizations to the symplectic structure, or to maps between classically equivalent field theory actions. We also discuss how one can introduce the Riemannian metric in this approach and the consequences of our results for noncommutative gravity theories.

Casimir interaction between a perfect conductor and graphene described by the Dirac model

We adopt the Dirac model for graphene and calculate the Casimir interaction energy between a plane suspended graphene sample and a parallel plane perfect conductor. This is done in two ways. First, we use the Quantum Field Theory (QFT) approach and evaluate the leading order diagram in a theory with 2+1 dimensional fermions interacting with 3+1 dimensional photons. Next, we consider an effective theory for the electromagnetic field with matching conditions induced by quantum quasi-particles in graphene. The first approach turns out to be the leading order in the coupling constant of the second one. The Casimir interaction for this system appears to be rather weak. It exhibits a strong dependence on the mass of the quasi-particles in graphene.

Diffeomorphism covariant star products and noncommutative gravity

The use of a diffeomorphism covariant star product enables us to construct diffeomorphism invariant gravities on noncommutative symplectic manifolds without twisting the symmetries. As an example, we construct noncommutative deformations of all two-dimensional dilaton gravity models thus overcoming some difficulties of earlier approaches. One of such models appears to be integrable. We find all classical solutions of this model and discuss their properties.

Towards noncommutative gravity

In this short article accessible for non-experts I discuss possible ways of constructing a non-commutative gravity paying special attention to possibilities of realizing the full diffeomorphism symmetry and to relations with 2D gravities.

Parity-odd effects and polarization rotation in graphene

We show that the presence of parity-odd terms in the conductivity (or, in other words, in the polarization tensor of Dirac quasiparticles in graphene) leads to rotation of polarization of the electromagnetic waves passing through suspended samples of graphene. Parity-odd Chern-Simons type contributions appear in external magnetic field, giving rise to a quantum Faraday effect (though other sources of parity-odd effects may also be discussed). The estimated order of the effect is well above the sensitivity limits of modern optical instruments.
