Anomalous spin-waves and the commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition in LiNiPO4

Detailed spin-wave spectra of magneto-electric LiNiPO4 have been measured by neutron scattering at low temperatures in the commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic (AF) phase with ordering temperature 20.8 K. An anomalous low-energy mode is observed at the modulation vector of the incommensurate (IC) AF phase appearing above the 20.8 K. A linear spin-wave model based on Heisenberg exchange couplings and single ion anisotropies accounts for all the observed spin-wave dispersions and intensities. Along the b axis an unusually strong next-nearest-neighbor AF coupling competes with the dominant nearest-neighbor AF exchange interaction and causes the IC structure.

Field-induced magnetic phases and electric polarization in LiNiPO4

Neutron diffraction is used to probe the (H,T) phase diagram of magneto-electric (ME) LiNiPO4 for magnetic fields along the c-axis. At zero field the Ni spins order in two antiferromagnetic phases. One has commensurate (C) structures and general ordering vectors (0,0,0), the other one is incommensurate (IC) with ordering vector (0,q,0). At low temperatures the C order collapses above 12 Tesla and adopts an IC structure with modulation vector parallel to (0,q,0). We show that C order is required for the ME effect and establish how electric polarization results from a field-induced reduction of the total magneto-elastic energy.

Charge inversion at minute electrolyte concentrations

Anionic DMPA monolayers spread on LaCl$_3$ solutions reveal strong cation adsorption and a sharp transition to surface overcharging at unexpectedly low bulk salt concentrations. We determine the surface accumulation of La$^{3+}$ with anomalous x-ray reflectivity and find that La$^{3+}$ compensates the lipid surface charge by forming a Stern layer with $\approx 1$ La$^{3+}$ ion per 3 lipids below a critical bulk concentration, $c_t \approx 500 \mathrm{nM}$. Above $c_t$, the surface concentration of La$^{3+}$ increases to a saturation level with $\approx 1$ La$^{3+}$ per lipid, thus implying that the total electric charge of the La$^{3+}$ exceeds the surface charge. This overcharge is observed at $\approx$ 4 orders of magnitude lower concentration than predicted in ion-ion correlation theories. We suggest that transverse electrostatic correlations between mobile ions and surface charges (interfacial Bjerrum pairing) may account for the charge inversion observed in this dilute regime.

Magnetic field induced orientation of superconducting MgB$_2$ crystallites determined by X-ray diffraction

X-ray diffraction studies of fine polycrystalline samples of MgB$_2$ in the superconducting state reveal that crystals orient with their \emph{c}-axis in a plane normal to the direction of the applied magnetic field. The MgB$_2$ samples were thoroughly ground to obtain average grain size 5 - 10 $μ$m in order to increase the population of free single crystal grains in the powder. By monitoring Bragg reflections in a plane normal to an applied magnetic field we find that the powder is textured with significantly stronger (\emph{0,0,l}) reflections in comparison to (\emph{h,k,0}), which remain essentially unchanged. The orientation of the crystals with the \emph{ab}-plane parallel to the magnetic field at all temperatures below $T_c$ demonstrates that the sign of the torque under magnetic field does not alter, in disagreement with current theoretical predictions.

Bjerrum pairing correlations at charged interfaces

Electrostatic correlations play a fundamental role in aqueous solutions. In this letter, we identify transverse and lateral correlations as two mutually exclusive regimes. We show that the transverse regime leads to binding by generalization of Bjerrum pair formation theory, yielding binding constants from first-principle statistical-mechanical calculations. We compare our theoretical predictions with experiments on charged membranes and Langmuir monolayers and find good agreement. We contrast our approach with existing theories in the strong-coupling limit and on charged modulated interfaces, and discuss different scenarios that lead to charge reversal and equal-sign attraction by macro-ions.

Magnetic excitations in {Mo72Fe30}

We report cold-neutron inelastic neutron scattering measurements on deuterated samples of the giant polyoxomolybdate magnetic molecule {Mo72Fe30}. The 30 s = 5/2 Fe+3 ions occupy the vertices of an icosidodecahedron, and interact via antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor coupling. The measurements reveal a band of magnetic excitations near E ~ 0.6 meV. The spectrum broadens and shifts to lower energy as the temperature is increased, and also is strongly affected by magnetic fields. The results can be interpreted within the context of an effective three-sublattice spin Hamiltonian.

Commensurate-Incommensurate Magnetic Phase Transition in Magnetoelectric Single Crystal LiNiPO$_4$

Neutron scattering studies of single-crystal LiNiPO$_4$ reveal a spontaneous first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg reflection, and a ferromagnetic component giving rise to peaks at small momentum-transfers around the origin at $(0,\pm Q,0)$. The wavelength of the modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state. These observations explain the anomalous first-order transition seen in the magnetoelectric effect of this system.

Induced Crystallization of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes at the Gas-Water Interface

Synchrotron-X-ray and surface tension studies of a strong polyelectrolyte (PE) in the semi-dilute regime (~ 0.1M monomer-charges) with varying surfactant concentrations show that minute surfactant concentrations induce the formation of a PE-surfactant complex at the gas/solution interface. X-ray reflectivity and grazing angle X-ray diffraction (GIXD) provide detailed information of the top most layer, where it is found that the surfactant forms a two-dimensional liquid-like monolayer, with a noticeable disruption of the structure of water at the interface. With the addition of salt (NaCl) columnar-crystals with distorted-hexagonal symmetry are formed.
