Long-range correlations in finite nuclei: comparison of two self-consistent treatments

Long-range correlations, which are partially responsible for the observed fragmentation and depletion of low-lying single-particle strength, are studied in the Green's function formalism. The self-energy is expanded up to second order in the residual interaction. We compare two methods of implementing self-consistency in the solution of the Dyson equation beyond Hartree-Fock, for the case of the 16O nucleus. It is found that the energy-bin method and the BAGEL method lead to globally equivalent results. In both methods the final single-particle strength functions are characterized by exponential tails at energies far from the Fermi level.

Pion and photon induced reactions on the nucleon in a unitary model

We present a relativistic calculation of pion scattering, pion photoproduction and Compton scattering on the nucleon in the energy region of the \Del-resonance (upto 450 MeV photon lab energy), in a unified framework which obeys the unitarity constraint. It is found that the recent data on the cross section for nucleon Compton scattering determine accurately the parameters of the electromagnetic nucleon--\Del\ coupling. The calculated pion-photoproduction partial-wave amplitudes agree well with the recent Arndt analysis.

The Spectral Function for Finite Nuclei in the Local Density Approximation

The spectral function for finite nuclei is computed within the framework of the Local Density Approximation, starting from nuclear matter spectral functions obtained with a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. The spectral function is decomposed into a single-particle part and a ''correlated'' part; the latter is treated in the local density approximation. As an application momentum distributions, quasi-particle strengths and overlap functions for valence hole states, and the light-cone momentum distribution in finite nuclei are computed.

Dilepton production from virtual bremsstrahlung induced by proton capture

Dilepton production following radiative capture of a proton on a nuclear target is studied in the Impulse Approximation. The cross section is decomposed in terms of four time-like nuclear structure functions through a longitudinal-transverse separation of the nuclear current. Using a simple PWIA model, cross sections and conversion factors are calculated for capture reactions p + n >> d + e^+ e^-, p + p >> 2He + e^+ e^- and p + 11B >> 12C + e^+ e^- at proton energies of 100-200 MeV. The result is compared with a recent measurement of the conversion factor for p + 11B.
