Spontaneous decay of a soft optical phonon in the relaxor ferroelectric PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$

We report the spontaneous decay of a soft, optical phonon in a solid. Using neutron spectroscopy, we find that specific phonon lifetimes in the relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ are anomalously short within well-defined ranges of energy and momentum. This behavior is independent of ferroelectric order and occurs when the optical phonon with a specific energy and momentum can kinematically decay into two acoustic phonons with lower phase velocity. We interpret the well-known relaxor "waterfall" effect as a form of quasiparticle decay analogous to that previously reported in quantum spin liquids and quantum fluids.

Depth dependant element analysis of PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ using muonic X-rays

The relaxor PbMg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$O$_{3}$ (PMN) has received attention due to its potential applications as a piezoelectric when doped with PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). Previous results have found that there are two phases existing in the system, one linked to the near-surface regions of the sample, the other in the bulk. However, the exact origin of these two phases is unclear. In this paper, depth dependant analysis results from negative muon implantation experiments are presented. It is shown that the Pb content is constant throughout all depths probed in the sample, but the Mg and Nb content changes in the near-surface region below 100$μ$m. At a implantation depth of 60$μ$m, it is found that there is a 25% increase in Mg content, with a simultaneous 5% decrease in Nb content in order to maintain charge neutrality. These results show that the previously observed skin effects in PMN are due to a change in concentration and unit cell.

Crafting the strain state in epitaxial thin films: A case study of CoFe2O4 films on Pb(Mg,Nb)O3-PbTiO3

The strain dependence of electric and magnetic properties has been widely investigated, both from a fundamental science perspective and an applications point of view. Electromechanical coupling through field-induced polarization rotation (PRO) and polarization reorientation (PRE) in piezoelectric single crystals can provide an effective strain in film/substrate epitaxial heterostructures. However, the specific pathway of PRO and PRE is a complex thermodynamic process, depending on chemical composition, temperature, electric field and mechanical load. Here, systematic studies of the temperature-dependent field-induced phase transitions in Pb(Mg,Nb)O3-PbTiO3 single crystals with different initial phase and orientation configurations have been performed. Different types of strains, volatile/nonvolatile and biaxial/uniaxial, have been measured by both macroscopic and in-situ X-ray diffraction techniques. In addition, the strain state of epitaxial Mn-doped CoFe2O4 thin films was examined by magnetic anisotropy measurements, where a giant magnetoelectric coupling has been demonstrated.

Arrhenius-type domain growth in Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 crystals

Single crystals of Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3-Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) poled along [001] were investigated by dielectric, x-ray, and polarized light (PLM) and piezo-force microscopy (PFM) methods. PLM revealed {100} macro-domain plates that formed after poling, whose size increased on heating between room temperature and a rhombohedral \rightarrow tetragonal phase transition, above which point a break-up of the macro-domain plates was observed. Corresponding PFM studies demonstrated that poling reduced the size of stripe-like domains that were internal to the macro-domain plates, whose size also increased on heating to TR-T. The temperature dependence of both the size of the macro-domain plates and internal sub-domains followed the Arrhenius relation with the activation energy of 0.4-0.5eV. The coercive field displays an abnormal increase on heating below TR-T, different than that for PMN-PT. The anomalously increased coercive field can be ascribed to the Arrhenius-type domain growth, indicating a simple thermally activated process and an important role of hierarchial domains in the improved performance of PIN-PMN-PT.

Evidence for anisotropic polar nanoregions in relaxor PMN: A neutron study of the elastic constants and anomalous TA phonon damping

We use neutron scattering to characterize the acoustic phonons in the relaxor PMN and demonstrate the presence of an anisotropic damping mechanism directly related to short-range, polar correlations. For a large range of temperatures above Tc ~ 210, K, where dynamic polar correlations exist, acoustic phonons propagating along [1\bar{1}0] and polarized along [110] (TA2 phonons) are overdamped and softened across most of the Brillouin zone. By contrast, acoustic phonons propagating along [100] and polarized along [001] (TA1 phonons) are overdamped and softened for only a limited range of wavevectors. The anisotropy and temperature dependence of the acoustic phonon energy linewidth are directly correlated with the elastic diffuse scattering, indicating that polar nanoregions are the cause of the anomalous behavior. The damping and softening vanish for q -> 0, i.e. for long-wavelength acoustic phonons, which supports the notion that the anomalous damping is a result of the coupling between the relaxational component of the diffuse scattering and the harmonic TA phonons. Therefore, these effects are not due to large changes in the elastic constants with temperature because the elastic constants correspond to the long-wavelength limit. We compare the elastic constants we measure to those from Brillouin scattering and to values reported for pure PT. We show that while the values of C44 are quite similar, those for C11 and C12 are significantly less in PMN and result in a softening of (C11-C12) over PT. There is also an increased elastic anisotropy (2C44/(C11-C12)) versus that in PT. These results suggest an instability to TA2 acoustic fluctuations in relaxors. We discuss our results in the context of the debate over the "waterfall" effect and show that they are inconsistent with TA-TO phonon coupling or other models that invoke the presence of a second optic mode.

Aging associated domain evolution in the orthorhombic phase of <001> textured (K0.5Na0.5)Nb0.97Sb0.03O3 ceramics

An aging effect due to a domain evolution in (K0.5,Na0.5)Nb0.97Sb0.03O3 <001> textured ceramics was investigated by piezoresponse force microscopy. We find that such an aging effect is pronounced in the orthorhombic single phase field. A more uniform and finer domain structure was found with aging, which was believed to originate from defect-migration. After poling, large domains with smooth boundaries were found in the aged condition.

Interplay between static and dynamic polar correlations in relaxor Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_{3}

We have characterized the dynamics of the polar nanoregions in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) through high-resolution neutron backscattering and spin-echo measurements of the diffuse scattering cross section. We find that the diffuse scattering intensity consists of \emph{both} static and dynamic components. The static component first appears at the Curie temperature $Θ\sim 400$ K, while the dynamic component freezes completely at the temperature T$_{f} \sim 200$ K; together, these components account for all of the observed spectral weight contributing to the diffuse scattering cross section. The integrated intensity of the dynamic component peaks near the temperature at which the frequency-dependent dielectric constant reaches a maximum (T$_{max}$) when measured at 1 GHz, i. e. on a timescale of $\sim 1$ ns. Our neutron scattering results can thus be directly related to dielectric and infra-red measurements of the polar nanoregions. Finally, the global temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering can be understood in terms of just two temperature scales, which is consistent with random field models.

Soft phonon columns on the edge of the Brillouin zone in the relaxor PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3

We report lattice dynamical measurements, made using neutron inelastic scattering methods, of the relaxor perovskite PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3 (PMN) at momentum transfers near the edge of the Brillouin zone. Unusual"columns" of phonon scattering that are localized in momentum, but extended in energy, are seen at both high-symmetry points along the zone edge: \vec{Q}_R={1/2, 1/2, 1/2} and \vec{Q}_M={1/2,1/2,0}. These columns soften at ~400 K which is similar to the onset temperature of the zone-center diffuse scattering, indicating a competition between ferroelectric and antiferroelectric distortions. We propose a model for the atomic displacements associated with these phonon modes that is based on a combination of structure factors and group theoretical analysis. This analysis suggests that the scattering is not from tilt modes (rotational modes of oxygen octahedra), but from zone-boundary optic modes that are associated with the displacement of Pb^{2+} and O^{2-} ions. Whereas similar columns of scattering have been reported in metallic and (less commonly) molecular systems, they are unusual in insulating materials, particularly in ferroelectrics; therefore, the physical origin of this inelastic feature in PMN is unknown. We speculate that the underlying disorder contributes to this unique anomaly.

Phase transitions in multiferroic BiFeO3 crystals, thin-layers, and ceramics: Enduring potential for a single phase, room-temperature magnetoelectric 'holy grail'

Magnetic phase transitions in multiferroic bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) induced by magnetic field, epitaxial strain, and composition modification are considered. These transitions from a spatially modulated spin spiral state to a homogenous antiferromagnetic one are accompanied by the release of latent magnetization and a linear magnetoelectric effect that makes BiFeO3-based materials efficient room-temperature single phase multiferroics.

Two-phonon coupling to the antiferromagnetic phase transition in multiferroic BiFeO3

A prominent band centered at around 1000-1300 cm-1 and associated with resonant enhancement of two-phonon Raman scattering is reported in multiferroic BiFeO3 thin films and single crystals. A strong anomaly in this band occurs at the antiferromagnetic Neel temperature. This band is composed of three peaks, assigned to 2A4, 2E8, and 2E9 Raman modes. While all three peaks were found to be sensitive to the antiferromagnetic phase transition, the 2E8 mode, in particular, nearly disappears at TN on heating, indicating a strong spin-two phonon coupling in BiFeO3.

Neutron and X-ray diffraction study of cubic [111] field cooled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3

Neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques have been used to study the competing long and short-range polar order in the relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) under a [111] applied electric field. Despite reports of a structural transition from a cubic phase to a rhombohedral phase for fields E $>$ 1.7 kV/cm, we find that the bulk unit cell remains cubic (within a sensitivity of 90$^{\circ}$-$α$ =0.03$^{\circ}$)for fields up to 8 kV/cm. Furthermore, we observe a structural transition confined to the near surface volume or `skin' of the crystal where the cubic cell is transformed to a rhombohedral unit cell at T$_{c}$=210 K for E $>$ 4 kV/cm, for which 90$^{\circ}$-$α$=0.08 $\pm$ 0.03$^{\circ}$ below 50 K. While the bulk unit cell remains cubic, a suppression of the diffuse scattering and concomitant enhancement of the Bragg peak intensity is observed below T$_{c}$=210 K, indicating a more ordered structure with increasing electric field yet an absence of a long-range ferroelectric ground state in the bulk. The electric field strength has little effect on the diffuse scattering above T$_{c}$, however below T$_{c}$ the diffuse scattering is reduced in intensity and adopts an asymmetric lineshape in reciprocal space. The absence of hysteresis in our neutron measurements (on the bulk) and the presence of two distinct temperature scales suggests that the ground state of PMN is not a frozen glassy phase as suggested by some theories but is better understood in terms of random fields introduced through the presence of structural disorder. Based on these results, we also suggest that PMN represents an extreme example of the two-length scale problem, and that the presence of a distinct skin maybe necessary for a relaxor ground state.

Damped Soft Phonons and Diffuse Scattering in 40PMN-60PT

Using neutron elastic and inelastic scattering and high-energy x-ray diffraction, we present a comparison of 40% Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$-60% PbTiO$_{3}$ (PMN-60PT) with pure Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ (PMN) and PbTiO$_{3}$ (PT). We measure the structural properties of PMN-60PT to be identical to pure PT, however, the lattice dynamics are exactly that previously found in relaxors PMN and PZN. PMN-60PT displays a well-defined macroscopic structural transition from a cubic to tetragonal unit cell at 550 K. The diffuse scattering is shown to be weak indicating that the structural distortion is long-range in PMN-60PT and short-range polar correlations (polar nanoregions) are not present. Even though polar nanoregions are absent, the soft optic mode is short-lived for wavevectors near the zone-centre. Therefore, PMN-60PT displays the same waterfall effect as prototypical relaxors PMN and PZN. We conclude that it is random fields resulting from the intrinsic chemical disorder which is the reason for the broad transverse optic mode observed in PMN and PMN-60PT near the zone centre and not due to the formation of short-ranged polar correlations. Through our comparison of PMN, PMN-60PT, and pure PT, we interpret the dynamic and static properties of the PMN-xPT system in terms of a random field model in which the cubic anisotropy term dominates with increasing doping of PbTiO$_{3}$.

Bias field effect on the temperature anomalies of dielectric permittivity in PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3- PbTiO3 single crystals

In contrast to ordinary ferroelectrics where the temperature, Tm, of the permittivity maximum monotonically increases with bias field, E, in (1-x)PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-(x)PbTiO3 (0<x<0.35) single crystals, Tm was found to remain constant or decrease with E up to a certain threshold field, Et, above which Tm starts increasing. Et decreases with x and almost disappears at about x=0.4. We explain this field dependence by the quenched random fields and coupling between the orientable dipoles with average polarization. For crystals with 0.06<x<0.13, the T-E phase diagrams are constructed, which include the relaxor, ferroelectric, glass and mixed ferroelectric-glass phases. The boundary between the ferroelectric and relaxor phases corresponds to a first-order phase transition and is characterized by thermal hysteresis with a large curvature of the line obtained in the field cooling mode, and by the presence of the end-point above which there is no difference between the ferroelectric and relaxor phases. The glass phase has a nearly field-independent boundary in the vicinity of the Vogel-Fulcher temperature TVF. The coupling between the glass order parameter and polarization changes the ferroelectric boundary at temperatures lower than TV

Intermediate ferroelectric orthorhombic and monoclinic MB phases in [110]- electric field cooled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30%PbTiO3 crystals

Structural phase transformations of [110] electric field cooled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-30%PbTiO3 (PMN-30%PT) crystals have been performed by x-ray diffraction in a field-cooled (FC) condition. A phase sequence of cubic(C)-tetragonal(T)-orthorhombic (O)-monoclinic (MB) was found on field-cooling (FC); and a R-MB-O one was observed with increasing field beginning from the zero field-cooled (ZFC) condition at room temperature. The application of the [110] electric field induced a dramatic change in the phase sequence in the FC condition, compared to the corresponding data for PMN-30%PT crystals in a [001] field, which shows that the phase sequence in the FC condition is altered by the crystallographic direction along which a modest electric field (E) is applied. Only when E is applied along [110] are intermediate O and MB phases observed.

Low Symmetry Phase in (001) BiFeO$_3$ Epitaxial Constrained Thin Films

The lattice of (001)-oriented BiFeO$_3$ epitaxial thin film has been identified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. By choosing proper scattering zones containing the fixed (001) reflection, we have shown that low-symmetry phases similar to a $M_A$ phase exist in the thin film at room temperature. These results demonstrate a change in phase stability from rhombohedral in bulk single crystals, to a modified monoclinic structure in epitaxial thin films.

Structural phase transformation and phase boundary/stability studies of field-cooled Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-32%PbTiO3 crystals

Structural phase transformations in (001)-oriented (1-x)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3O3)-32%PbTiO3 (PMN-x%PT) crystals have been investigated by x-ray diffraction. A C->T->MC sequence was observed in both the field-cooled (FC) and zero-field-cooled (ZFC) conditions. Most interestingly, an anomalous increase in the C->T phase boundary with increasing field has been observed, which is seemingly a common characteristic of crystals whose compositions are in the vicinity of the MPB, irrespective of the width of the T and MC phase regions.

Direct observation of the near-surface layer in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ using neutron diffraction

Spatially resolved neutron diffraction as a function of crystal depth in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ reveals the presence of a distinct near-surface region. A dramatic change in both the lattice constant and the Bragg peak intensity as a function of crystal depth is observed to occur in this region over a length scale $\sim$ 100 $μ$m. This confirms a previous assertion, based on a comparison between high-energy x-rays and neutrons, that such a near surface region exists in the relaxors. Consequences to both single crystal and powder diffraction measurements and previous bulk neutron diffraction measurements on large single crystals are discussed.

Strong Influence of the diffuse component on the lattice dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$

The temperature and zone dependence of the lattice dynamics in Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$ is characterized using neutron inelastic scattering. A strong correlation between the diffuse and phonon scattering is measured. The lattice dynamics in Brillouin zones where the diffuse scattering is strong is observed to display qualitatively different behavior than those zones where the diffuse scattering is weak. In the (220) and (200) zones, where there is a weak diffuse component, the dynamics are well described by coupled harmonic oscillators. Compared with SrTiO$_{3}$, the coupling is weak and isotropic, resulting in only a small transfer of spectral weight from one mode to another. A comparison of the scattering in these zones to the (110) zone, where a strong diffuse component is present, reveals a strong coupling of the diffuse (or central) component to the acoustic mode. We speculate that the coupling to the central peak is the reason for several recent conflicting interpretations of the lattice dynamics based on data from zones with a strong diffuse component.
