Collective multipole excitations in a microscopic relativistic approach

A relativistic mean field description of collective excitations of atomic nuclei is studied in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation (RRPA). In particular, results of RRPA calculations of multipole giant resonances and of low-lying collective states in spherical nuclei are analyzed. By using effective Lagrangians which, in the mean-field approximation, provide an accurate description of ground-state properties, an excellent agreement with experimental data is also found for the excitation energies of low-lying collective states and of giant resonances. Two points are essential for the successful application of the RRPA in the description of dynamical properties of finite nuclei: (i) the use of effective Lagrangians with non-linear terms in the meson sector, and (ii) the fully consistent treatment of the Dirac sea of negative energy states.

The time-dependent relativistic mean-field theory and the random phase approximation

The Relativistic Random Phase Approximation (RRPA) is derived from the Time-dependent Relativistic Mean Field (TD RMF) theory in the limit of small amplitude oscillations. In the no-sea approximation of the RMF theory, the RRPA configuration space includes not only the usual particle-hole states, but also a-h configurations, i.e. pairs formed from occupied states in the Fermi sea and empty negative-energy states in the Dirac sea. The contribution of the negative energy states to the RRPA matrices is examined in a schematic model, and the large effect of Dirac sea states on isoscalar strength distributions is illustrated for the giant monopole resonance in 116Sn. It is shown that, because the matrix elements of the time-like component of the vector meson fields which couple the a-h configurations with the ph-configurations are strongly reduced with respect to the corresponding matrix elements of the isoscalar scalar meson field, the inclusion of states with unperturbed energies more than 1.2 GeV below the Fermi energy has a pronounced effect on giant resonances with excitation energies in the MeV region. The influence of nuclear magnetism, i.e. the effect of the spatial components of the vector fields is examined, and the difference between the non-relativistic and relativistic RPA predictions for the nuclear matter compression modulus is explained.

Collectivity of the low-lying dipole strength in relativistic random phase approximation

The relativistic random phase approximation is applied in the analysis of the evolution of the isovector dipole response in nuclei with a large neutron excess. The self-consistent framework of relativistic mean-field theory, which has been very successfully applied in the description of ground-state properties of nuclei far from the valley of $β$-stability, is extended to study the possible onset of low-energy collective isovector dipole modes in nuclei with extreme isospin values.

Pygmy dipole resonances in relativistic random phase approximation

The isovector dipole response in $^{208}$Pb is described in the framework of a fully self-consistent relativistic random phase approximation. The NL3 parameter set for the effective mean-field Lagrangian with nonlinear meson self-interaction terms, used in the present calculations, reproduces ground state properties as well as the excitation energies of giant resonances in nuclei. In addition to the isovector dipole resonance in $^{208}$Pb, the present analysis predicts the occurrence of low-lying E1 peaks in the energy region between 7 and 11 MeV. In particular, a collective state has been identified whose dynamics correspond to that of a dipole pygmy resonance: the vibration of the excess neutrons against the inert core composed of equal number of protons and neutrons.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of sizes and shapes of A=20 isobars

Ground-state properties of A = 20 nuclei ($^{20}$N, $^{20}$O, $^{20}$F, $^{20}$Ne, $^{20}$Na, $^{20}$Mg) are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Binding energies, quadrupole deformations, nuclear matter radii, and differences in radii of proton and neutron distributions are compared with recent experimental data.

Mapping the proton drip line from Z=31 to Z=49

The structure of proton drip line nuclei in the 60 < A < 100 mass range is studied with the Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) model. For the elements which determine the astrophysical rapid proton capture process path, the RHB model predicts the location of the proton drip-line, the ground-state quadrupole deformations and one-proton separation energies at and beyond the drip-line. The results of the present theoretical investigation are compared with available experimental data. For possible odd-Z ground state proton emitters, the calculated deformed single-particle orbitals occupied by the odd valence proton and the corresponding spectroscopic factors are compared with predictions of the macroscopic-microscopic mass model.

Neutron density distributions for atomic parity nonconservation experiments

The neutron distributions of Cs, Ba, Yb and Pb isotopes are described in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. The self-consistent ground state proton and neutron density distributions are calculated with the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model. The binding energies, the proton and neutron radii, and the quadrupole deformations are compared with available experimental data, as well as with recent theoretical studies of the nuclear structure corrections to the weak charge in atomic parity nonconservation experiments.

Isoscalar compression modes in relativistic random phase approximation

A fully consistent relativistic RPA calculation is performed for the monopole and dipole compression modes in nuclei. The emphasis is put on the effects of Dirac sea states which are generally neglected in relativistic RPA calculations. It is found that these effects can be quite important for the isoscalar monopole mode. The main contributions from the pairs of Fermi to Dirac sea states are through the exchange of the scalar meson, while the vector mesons play a negligible role. Numerical results of relativistic RPA are checked with the constrained relativistic mean field model in the monopole case. A good agreement beteween monopole energies calculated in RRPA and in time-dependent relativistic mean field approach is achieved. For the monopole compression mode, a comparison of experimental and calculated energies gives a value of 250 $\sim$ 270 MeV for the nuclear matter incompressibility. A large discrepancy remains between theory and experiment in the case of the dipole compression mode.

Isoscalar dipole mode in relativistic random phase approximation

The isoscalar giant dipole resonance structure in $^{208}$Pb is calculated in the framework of a fully consistent relativistic random phase approximation, based on effective mean-field Lagrangians with nonlinear meson self-interaction terms. The results are compared with recent experimental data and with calculations performed in the Hartree-Fock plus RPA framework. Two basic isoscalar dipole modes are identified from the analysis of the velocity distributions. The discrepancy between the calculated strength distributions and current experimental data is discussed, as well as the implications for the determination of the nuclear matter incompressibility.

Parity violating elastic electron scattering and neutron density distributions in the Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model

Parity violating elastic electron scattering on neutron-rich nuclei is described in the framework of relativistic mean-field theory. Self-consistent ground state density distributions of Ne, Na, Ni and Sn isotopes are calculated with the relativistic Hartree- Bogoliubov model, and the resulting neutron radii are compared with available experimental data. For the elastic scattering of 850 MeV electrons on these nuclei, the parity-violating asymmetry parameters are calculated using a relativistic optical model with inclusion of Coulomb distortion effects. The asymmetry parameters for chains of isotopes are compared, and their relation to the Fourier transforms of neutron densities is studied. It is shown that parity-violating asymmetries are sensitive not only to the formation of the neutron skin, but also to the shell effects of the neutron density distribution.

Ground-state properties of deformed proton emitters in the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model

The Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) model is applied in the description of ground-state properties of proton-rich odd-Z nuclei in the region $53 \leq Z \leq 69$. The NL3 effective interaction is used in the mean-field Lagrangian, and pairing correlations are described by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. The model predicts the location of the proton drip-line, the ground-state quadrupole deformations and one-proton separation energies at and beyond the drip-line, the deformed single-particle orbitals occupied by the odd valence proton, and the corresponding spectroscopic factors. The results of fully self-consistent RHB calculations are compared with available experimental data, and with predictions of the macroscopic-microscopic mass model.

Relativistic mean-field description of nuclei at the drip lines

We present a review of recent applications of the relativistic mean-field theory to the structure of nuclei close to the drip-lines. For systems with extreme isospin values, the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov model provides a unified and self-consistent description of mean-field and pairing correlations. The model has been applied in studies of structure phenomena that include: formation of neutron skin and of neutron halos in light nuclei in the mass region above the s-d neutron shell, the strong isospin dependence of the effective spin-orbit interaction and the resulting modification of surface properties, the suppression of the spherical N=28 shell gap for neutron-rich nuclei and the related phenomenon of deformation and shape coexistence, the proton drip-line in the spherical nuclei $14\leq Z \leq 28$, and ground-state proton radioactivity in the region of deformed nuclei $59 \leq Z \leq 69$.

Relativistic mean-field description of the dynamics of giant resonances

The relativistic mean-field theory provides a framework in which the nuclear many-body problem is described as a self-consistent system of nucleons and mesons. In the mean-field approximation, the self-consistent time evolution of the nuclear system describes the dynamics of collective motion: nuclear compressibility from monopole resonances, regular and chaotic dynamics of isoscalar and isovector collective vibrations.

Nonlinear dynamics of giant resonances in atomic nuclei

The dynamics of monopole giant resonances in nuclei is analyzed in the time-dependent relativistic mean-field model. The phase spaces of isoscalar and isovector collective oscillations are reconstructed from the time-series of dynamical variables that characterize the proton and neutron density distributions. The analysis of the resulting recurrence plots and correlation dimensions indicate regular motion for the isoscalar mode, and chaotic dynamics for the isovector oscillations. Information-theoretic functionals identify and quantify the nonlinear dynamics of giant resonances in quantum systems that have spatial as well as temporal structure.

Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov description of the deformed N = 28 region

Ground-state properties of neutron-rich $N \approx 28$ nuclei are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Two-neutron separation energies and ground-state quadrupole deformations that result from fully self-consistent RHB solutions, are compared with available experimental data. The model predicts a strong suppression of the spherical N=28 shell gap for neutron-rich nuclei: the $1f7/2 \to fp$ core breaking results in deformed ground states. Shape coexistence is expected for neutron-rich Si, S and Ar isotopes.

Solution of relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov equations in configurational representation: spherical neutron halo nuclei

The scaled harmonic oscillator basis (SHO) is derived by a local scaling-point transformation of the spherical harmonic oscillator radial wave functions. The unitary scaling transformation produces a basis with improved asymptotic properties. The SHO basis is employed in the solution of the relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov (RHB) equations in configurational space. The model is applied in the self-consistent mean-field approximation to the description of the neutron halo in Ne isotopes. It is shown that an expansion of nucleon spinors and mean-field potentials in the SHO basis reproduces the asymptotic properties of neutron densities calculated by finite element discretization in the coordinate space. In the RHB description of neutron skins and halos, SHO bases in two or three dimensions can be a useful alternative to technically complicated solutions on a mesh in coordinate space.

Proton drip-line nuclei in Relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory

Ground-state properties of spherical even-even nuclei $14\leq Z \leq 28$ and $N=18,20,22$ are described in the framework of Relativistic Hartree Bogoliubov (RHB) theory. The model uses the NL3 effective interaction in the mean-field Lagrangian, and describes pairing correlations by the pairing part of the finite range Gogny interaction D1S. Binding energies, two-proton separation energies, and proton $rms$ radii that result from fully self-consistent RHB solutions are compared with experimental data. The model predicts the location of the proton drip-line. The isospin dependence of the effective spin-orbit potential is discussed, as well as pairing properties that result from the finite range interaction in the $pp$ channel.
