Automatic alignment of an orbital angular momentum sorter in a transmission electron microscope using a convolution neural network

We report on the automatic alignment of a transmission electron microscope equipped with an orbital angular momentum sorter using a convolutional neural network. The neural network is able to control all relevant parameters of both the electron-optical setup of the microscope and the external voltage source of the sorter without input from the user. It is able to compensate for mechanical and optical misalignments of the sorter, in order to optimize its spectral resolution. The alignment is completed over a few frames and can be kept stable by making use of the fast fitting time of the neural network.

Proximate ferromagnetic state in the Kitaev model material $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$

$\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a major candidate for the realization of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid, but its zigzag antiferromagnetic order at low temperatures indicates deviations from the Kitaev model. We have quantified the spin Hamiltonian of $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ by a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study at the Ru $L_{3}$ absorption edge. In the paramagnetic state, the quasi-elastic intensity of magnetic excitations has a broad maximum around the zone center without any local maxima at the zigzag magnetic Bragg wavevectors. This finding implies that the zigzag order is fragile and readily destabilized by competing ferromagnetic correlations. The classical ground state of the experimentally determined Hamiltonian is actually ferromagnetic. The zigzag state is stabilized via a quantum "order by disorder" mechanism, leaving ferromagnetism -- along with the Kitaev spin liquid -- as energetically proximate metastable states. The three closely competing states and their collective excitations hold the key to the theoretical understanding of the unusual properties of $\alpha$-RuCl$_{3}$ in magnetic fields.

Nucleon-nucleon potentials in phase-space representation

A phase-space representation of nuclear interactions, which depends on the distance $\vec{r}$ and relative momentum $\vec{p}$ of the nucleons, is presented. A method is developed that permits to extract the interaction $V(\vec{r},\vec{p})$ from antisymmetrized matrix elements given in a spherical basis with angular momentum quantum numbers, either in momentum or coordinate space representation. This representation visualizes in an intuitive way the non-local behavior introduced by cutoffs in momentum space or renormalization procedures that are used to adapt the interaction to low momentum many-body Hilbert spaces, as done in the unitary correlation operator method or with the similarity renormalization group. It allows to develop intuition about the various interactions and illustrates how the softened interactions reduce the short-range repulsion in favor of non-locality or momentum dependence while keeping the scattering phase shifts invariant. It also reveals that these effective interactions can have undesired complicated momentum dependencies at momenta around and above the Fermi momentum. Properties, similarities and differences of the phase-space representations of the Argonne and the N3LO chiral potential, and their UCOM and SRG derivatives are discussed.

From nucleon-nucleon interaction matrix elements in momentum space to an operator representation

Starting from the matrix elements of the nucleon-nucleon interaction in momentum space we present a method to derive an operator representation with a minimal set of operators that is required to provide an optimal description of the partial waves with low angular momentum. As a first application we use this method to obtain an operator representation for the Argonne potential transformed by means of the unitary correlation operator method and discuss the necessity of including momentum dependent operators. The resulting operator representation leads to the same results as the original momentum space matrix elements when applied to the two-nucleon system and various light nuclei. For applications in fermionic and antisymmetrized molecular dynamics, where an operator representation of a soft but realistic effective interaction is indispensable, a simplified version using a reduced set of operators is given.

A geometry for optimizing nanoscale magnetic resonance force microscopy

We implement magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) in an experimental geometry, where the long axis of the cantilever is normal to both the external magnetic field and the RF microwire source. Measurements are made of the statistical polarization of $^1$H in polystyrene with negligible magnetic dissipation, gradients greater than $10^5$ T/m within 100 nm of the magnetic tip, and rotating RF magnetic fields over 12 mT at 115 MHz. This geometry could facilitate the application of nanometer-scale MRFM to nuclear species with low gyro-magnetic ratios and samples with broadened resonances, such as In spins in quantum dots.
