Measurement of the $^{159}$Tb(n, $γ$) cross section at the CSNS Back-n facility

The stellar (n, $γ$) cross section data for the mass numbers around A $\approx$ 160 are of key importance to nucleosynthesis in the main component of the slow neutron capture process, which occur in the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch (TP--AGB). The new measurement of (n, $γ$) cross sections for $^{159}$Tb was performed using the C$_6$D$_6$ detector system at the back streaming white neutron beam line (Back-n) of the China spallation neutron source (CSNS) with neutron energies ranging from 1 eV to 1 MeV. Experimental resonance capture kernels were reported up to 1.2 keV neutron energy with this capture measurement. Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) were derived from the measured $^{159}$Tb (n, $γ$) cross sections at $kT$ = 5 $\sim$ 100 keV and are in good agreement with the recommended data of KADoNiS-v0.3 and JEFF-3.3, while KADoNiS-v1.0 and ENDF-VIII.0 significantly overestimate the present MACS up to 40$\%$ and 20$\%$, respectively. A sensitive test of the s-process nucleosynthesis was also performed with the stellar evolution code MESA. Significant changes in abundances around A $\approx$ 160 were observed between the ENDF/B-VIII.0 and present measured rate of $^{159}$Tb(n, $γ$)$^{160}$Tb in the MESA simulation.

Neutron capture measurement and resonance parameter analysis of natSm

Multiple isotopes of samarium element are the isotopes produced by the s process, and 154Sm is produced by the r process. In addition, 144Sm is p nuclei in nuclear astrophysics. The measurement of these can help us to better understand the results of relevant photonuclear reaction experiments. On the other hand, 149Sm is a 235U fission product with a 1% yield, its cross sections are important to reactor neutronics. In this work, the neutron capture yield of the natural samarium target was measured at the back-streaming white neutron beamline (Back-n) of the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS), and the resonance parameters were analyzed by SAMMY code. The resonance peaks and the neutron separation energies contributed by the different isotopes are considered individually. The results of the capture yield found signs of the possibility of two resonance peaks at 8 eV, which awaits further experimental examination. Cross-section was calculated according to resonance parameters and was compared with other experimental results and evaluation databases of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2. A clear difference between ENDF/B VIII.0 and CENDL-3.2 database appears at 23.2 eV, the experimental result at this energy is smaller than data of ENDF/B VIII.0 database but CENDL-3.2 database. Most of the controversial experimental results invariably come from the samarium 149 isotope.

Experimentally well-constrained masses of $^{27}$P and $^{27}$S: Implications for studies of explosive binary systems

The mass of $^{27}$P was predicted to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes. To address the uncertainties and inconsistencies in the reported $^{27}$P masses in literature, a wealth of information has been extracted from the $β$-decay spectroscopy of the drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S. We determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be $-659(9)$~keV, which is 63~keV (2.3$σ$) higher than the AME2016 recommended value of $-722(26)$~keV. The experimentally unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S was estimated to be 17030(400)~keV in AME2016, and we constrain this mass to be 17678(77)~keV based on the measured $β$-delayed two-proton energy. In the temperature region of $(0.06-0.3)$~GK, the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate determined in this work is significantly lower than the rate recommended in the reaction rate libraries, up to two orders of magnitude around 0.1~GK. The impact of these newly determined masses and well-constrained rate on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been explored by hydrodynamic nova and post-processing XRB models. No substantial change was found in the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al or in the XRB energy generation rate, but we found that the calculated abundances of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Si at the last stage of XRB are increased by a factor of 2.4. We also conclude that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process.

Simultaneous measurement of beta-delayed proton and gamma emission of $^{26}$P for $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate

$β$ decay of $^{26}$P was used to populate the astrophysically important $E_x=$5929.4(8) keV $J^π=3{^+}$ state of $^{26}$Si. Both $β$-delayed proton at 418(8) keV and gamma ray at 1742(2) keV emitted from this state were measured simultaneously for the first time with corresponding absolute intensities of 11.1(12)\% and 0.59(44)\%, respectively. Besides, shell model calculations with weakly bound effects were performed to investigate the decay properties of other resonant states and a spin-parity of $4^+$ rather than $0^+$ was favored for the $E_x=$5945.9(40) keV state. Combining the experimental results and theoretical calculations, $^{25}$Al($p,γ$)$^{26}$Si reaction rate in explosive hydrogen burning environments was calculated and compared with previous studies.

Beta-decay spectroscopy of $^{27}$S

Background: Beta-decay spectroscopy provides valuable nuclear physics input for thermonuclear reaction rates of astrophysical interest and stringent test for shell-model theories far from the stability line. Purpose: The available decay properties of proton drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S is insufficient to constrain the properties of the key resonance in $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate and probe the possible isospin asymmetry. The decay scheme of $^{27}$S is complicated and far from being understood, which has motivated but also presented challenges for our experiment. Method: The $^{27}$S ions were implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector array surrounded by the high-purity germanium detectors, where the $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays were measured simultaneously. Results: The improved spectroscopic properties including the precise half-life of $^{27}$S, the excitation energies, $β$-decay branching ratios, log~$ft$ values, and $B$(GT) values for the states of $^{27}$P populated in the $β$ decay of $^{27}$S were measured and compared to the $^{27}$Mg mirror states and the shell-model calculations. The present work has expanded greatly on the previously established decay scheme of $^{27}$S. Conclusions: The precise proton-separation energy of $^{27}$P, the energy and the ratio between $γ$ and proton partial widths of the $3/2^+$ resonance were obtained, thereby determining the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate based mainly on experimental constraints. The first evidence for the observation of a large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{27}$S and $^{27}$Na is also provided. The experimental spectroscopic information can be reproduced by the shell-model calculation taking the weakly bound effect of the proton $1s_{1/2}$ orbit into account.

Constraint on the Ground-state Mass of 21Al and Three-Nucleon Forces

Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al.

The decay characteristic of $^{22}$Si and its ground-state mass significantly affected by three-nucleon forces

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.

Beta-decay study of $T_z=-2$ proton-rich nucleus $^{20}$Mg

The $β$ decay of the drip-line nucleus $^{20}$Mg gives important information on resonances in $^{20}$Na, which are relevant for the astrophysical $rp$-process. A detailed $β$ decay spectroscopic study of $^{20}$Mg was performed by a continuous-implantation method. A detection system was specially developed for charged-particle decay studies, giving improved spectroscopic information including the half-life of $^{20}$Mg, the excitation energies, the branching ratios, and the log $ft$ values for the states in $^{20}$Na populated in the $β$ decay of $^{20}$Mg. A new proton branch was observed and the corresponding excited state in $^{20}$Na was proposed. The large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{20}$Mg and $^{20}$O was reproduced, as well. However, no conclusive conclusion can be draw about the astrophysically interesting 2645~keV resonance in $^{20}$Na due to the limited statistics.

The self-consistent analysis for sub-barrier fusion enhancement effect in Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni

The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy-ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ingoing study of the effect of the positive Q-value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.

Magnetically Torqued Neutrino-Dominated Accretion Flows for Gamma-ray Bursts

Recent observations and theoretical work on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) favor the central engine model of a Kerr black hole (BH) surrounded by a magnetized neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF). The magnetic coupling between the BH and disk through a large-scale closed magnetic field exerts a torque on the disk, and transports the rotational energy from the BH to the disk. We investigate the properties of the NDAF with this magnetic torque. For a rapid spinning BH, the magnetic torque transfers enormous rotational energy from BH into the inner disk. There are two consequences: (i) the luminosity of neutrino annihilation is greatly augmented; (ii) the disk becomes thermally and viscously unstable in the inner region, and behaves S-Shape of the surface density versus accretion rate. It turns out that magnetically torqued NDAF can be invoked to interpret the variability of gamma-ray luminosity. In addition, we discuss the possibility of restarting the central engine to produce the X-ray flares with required energy.

Influence of the Magnetic Coupling Process on the Advection Dominated Accretion Flows around Black Holes

A large-scale closed magnetic field can transfer angular momentum and energy between a black hole (BH) and its surrounding accretion flow. We investigate the effects of this magnetic coupling (MC) process on the dynamics of a hot accretion flow (e.g., an advection dominated accretion flow, hereafter ADAF). The energy and angular momentum fluxes transported by the magnetic field are derived by an equivalent circuit approach. For a rapidly rotating BH, it is found that the radial velocity and the electron temperature of the accretion flow decrease, whereas the ion temperature and the surface density increase. The significance of the MC effects depends on the value of the viscous parameter α. The effects are obvious for α=0.3 but nearly ignorable for α=0.1. For a BH with specific angular momentum, a_*=0.9, and α=0.3, we find that for reasonable parameters the radiative efficiency of a hot accretion flow can be increased by about 30%.

A model of the light curves of Gamma-Ray Bursts

An extreme Kerr black hole (BH) surrounded by a precessing disk is invoked to explain the light curves of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) based on the coexistence of the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) and the magnetic coupling (MC) processes. The overall shape of the light curves and the duration of GRBs are interpreted by the evolution of the half-opening angle of the magnetic flux on the BH horizon, and the complex temporal structures are modulated by the precession and nutation of the jet powered by the BZ process. The time profile of the emission exhibits a fast rise and a slow decay due to the effect of the evolution of the half-opening angle. The light curves of several GRBs are well fitted by this model with only six free parameters.

Influences of magnetic coupling process on the spectrum of a disk covered by the corona

Recently, much attention has been paid to the magnetic coupling (MC) process, which is supported by very high emissivity indexes observed in Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 and GBHC XTE J1650-500. But the rotational energy transferred from a black hole is simply assumed to be radiated away from the surrounding accretion disk in black-body spectrum, which is obviously not consistent with the observed hard power-law X-ray spectra. We intend to introduce corona into the MC model to make it more compatible with the observations. We describe the model and the procedure of a simplified Monte Carlo simulation, compare the output spectra in the cases with and without the MC effects, and discuss the influences of three parameters involved in the MC process on the output spectra. It is shown that the MC process augments radiation fluxes in the UV or X-ray band. The emergent spectrum is affected by the BH spin and magnetic field strength at the BH horizon, while it is almost unaffected by the radial profile of the magnetic field at the disk. Introducing corona into the MC model will improve the fitting of the output spectra from AGNs and GBHCs.

A Toy Model for Gamma-Ray Bursts in Type Ib/C Supernovae

A toy model for gamma-ray burst-supernovae (GRB-SN) is discussed by considering the coexistence of baryon poor outflows from black holes (BHs) and a powerful spin-connection to surrounding disk, giving rise to consistent calorimetry as described by van Putten (2001a) in a variant of the Blandford-Znajek process (BZ, 1977). In this model the half-opening angle of the magnetic flux tube on the horizon is determined by the mapping relation between the angular coordinate on the BH horizon and the radial coordinate on the surrounding accretion disk. The GRB is powered by the baryon poor outflows in the BZ process, and the associated SN is powered by very small fraction of the spin energy transferred from the BH to the disk in the magnetic coupling (MC) process. The timescale of the GRB is fitted by the duration of the open magnetic flux on the horizon. It turns out that the data of several GRB-SNe are well fitted with our model.

Screw instability of the magnetic field connecting a rotating black hole with its surrounding disk

Screw instability of the magnetic field connecting a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding disk is discussed based on the model of the coexistence of the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) process and the magnetic coupling (MC) process (CEBZMC). A criterion for the screw instability with the state of CEBZMC is derived based on the calculations of the poloidal and toroidal components of the magnetic field on the disk. It is shown by the criterion that the screw instability will occur, if the BH spin and the power-law index for the variation of the magnetic field on the disk are greater than some critical values. It turns out that the instability occurs outside some critical radii on the disk. It is argued that the state of CEBZMC always accompanies the screw instability. In addtition, we show that the screw instability contributes only a small fraction of magnetic extraction of energy from a rotating BH.

Magnetic coupling of a rotating black hole with its surrounding accretion disk

Effects of magnetic coupling (MC) of a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding accretion disk are discussed in detail in the following aspects: (i) The mapping relation between the angular coordinate on the BH horizon and the radial coordinate on the disk is modified based on a more reasonable configuration of magnetic field, and a condition for coexistence of the Blandford-Znajek (BZ) and the MC process is derived. (ii) The transfer direction of energy and angular momentum in MC process is described equivalently by the co-rotation radius and by the flow of electromagnetic angular momentum and redshifted energy, where the latter is based on an assumption that the theory of BH magnetosphere is applicable to both the BZ and MC processes. (iii) The profile of the current on the BH horizon and that of the current density flowing from the magnetosphere onto the horizon are given in terms of the angular coordinate of the horizon. It is shown that the current on the BH horizon varies with the latitude of the horizon and is not continuous at the angular boundary between the open and closed magnetic field lines. (iv) The MC effects on disk radiation are discussed, and a very steep emissivity is produced by MC process, which is consistent with the recent XMM-Newton observation of the nearby bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 by a variety of parameters of the BH-disk system.

Transfer of energy and angular momentum in magnetic coupling process

The transfer of energy and angular momentum in the magnetic coupling (MC) of a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding accretion disc is discussed based on a mapping relation derived by considering the conservation of magnetic flux with two basic assumptions: (i)the magnetic field on the horizon is constant, (ii) the magnetic field on the disc surface varies as a power law with the radial coordinate of the disc. The following results are obtained: (i) the transfer direction of energy and angular momentum between the BH and the disc depends on the position of a co-rotation radius relative to the MC region on the disc, which is eventually determined by the BH spin; (ii) the evolution characteristics of a rotating BH in the MC process without disc accretion are depicted in a parameter space, and a series of values of the BH spin are given to indicate the evolution characteristics; (iii) the efficiency of converting accreted mass into radiation energy of a BH-disc system is discussed by considering coexistence of disc accretion and the MC process; (iv) the MC effects on disc radiation and emissivity index are discussed and it is concluded that they are consistent with the recent XMM-Newton observation of the nearby bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 with reference to a variety of parameters of the BH-disc system.

An analytic model of rotating hot spot and kHz QPOs in X-ray binaries

An analytic model of rotating hot spot is proposed to explain kilohertz quasi-periodic oscillations (kHz QPO) in X-ray binaries, which is based on the magnetic coupling (MC) of a rotating black hole (BH) with its surrounding accretion disc. The hot spot in the inner region of the disc is produced by energy transferred from a spinning BH with non-axisymmetric magnetic field. The frequency and energy band of the hot spot turns out to be related to six parameters, by which the strength and the azimuthal angular region of the bulging magnetic field on the BH horizon, the mass and spin of the BH, and the power-law index of the magnetic field varying with the radial coordinate on the disc are described. In addition, the correlation of the fluctuation of the bulging magnetic field with the widths of QPO frequency is discussed.
