Universal anyons at the irradiated surface of topological insulator

Anyons have recently received great attention due to their promising application in topological quantum computation. The best validated system that enjoys the anyonic excitations are the Laughlin states. The quasi-particles in Laughlin states are neither fermions nor bosons but possess the discrete statistical angle ? = ?=m, with m being an integer. Here we report a possible realization of the universal Abelian anyons, whose statistical angle can be tuned continuously by external parameters and can take any arbitrary values interpolating ? = 0 and ? = ?. The proposed setup is the surface state of a three dimensional topological insulator driven by an amplitude-modulated circularly-polarized light. It is found that the external field leads to a particular Floquet phase, which is a two-spatial-dimensional analogy of the Weyl semimetal phase in the Floquet first Brillouin zone. The chiral anomaly of this phase results in a U(1) Chern-Simons gauge theory with a tunable Floquet Chern number. Owing to this underlying gauge field theory, the irradiated surface of topological insulator constitutes a promising platform for the observation of the universal anyons.

Kondo-induced hybrid topological insulator in two-dimensional electron system with a quadratic band crossing point

We investigate the Kondo effect in the two-dimensional electron system with a non-trivial quadratic energy band crossing point. We show that the Kondo effect can induce a new hybrid topological insulator phase which is a coexistence state of the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the TRSbroken quantum spin Hall effect. This hybrid topological insulator exhibits not only a quantized charge Hall current but also a net spin current, which are localized at the edge boundaries. This peculiar topological state arises due to the interplay of two marginally relevant operators, i.e., the Kondo-coupling between the electrons and the local magnetic moment and the electron-electron interaction in the two-dimensional system.

Unified Theoretical Approach to Electronic Transport from Diffusive to Ballistic Regimes

We show that by integrating out the electric field and incorporating proper boundary conditions, a semiclassical Boltzmann equation can describe electron transport properties, continuously from the diffusive to ballistic regimes. General analytical formulas of the conductance in $D=1,2,3$ dimensions are obtained, which recover the Boltzmann-Drude formula and Landauer-Büttiker formula in the diffusive and ballistic limits, respectively. This intuitive and efficient approach can be applied to investigate the interplay of system size and impurity scattering in various charge and spin transport phenomena.

Non-adiabatic topological spin pumping

Based on the Floquet scattering theory, we analytically investigate the topological spin pumping for an exactly solvable model. Floquet spin Chern numbers are introduced to characterize the periodically time-dependent system. The topological spin pumping remains robust both in the presence and in the absence of the time-reversal symmetry, as long as the pumping frequency is smaller than the band gap, where the electron transport involves only the Floquet evanescent modes in the pump. For the pumping frequency greater than the band gap, where the propagating modes in the pump participate in the electron transport, the spin pumping rate decays rapidly, marking the end of the topological pumping regime.

Spin Chern Pumping from the Bulk of Two-Dimensional Topological Insulators

Topological insulators (TIs) are a new quantum state of matter discovered recently, which are characterized by unconventional bulk topological invariants. Proposals for practical applications of the TIs are mostly based upon their metallic surface or edge states. Here, we report the theoretical discovery of a bulk quantum pumping effect in a two-dimensional TI electrically modulated in adiabatic cycles. In each cycle, an amount of spin proportional to the sample width can be pumped into a nonmagnetic electrode, which is attributed to nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}$. Moreover, by using a half-metallic electrode, universal quantized charge pumping conductivities $-C_{\pm}e^2/h$ can be measured. This discovery paves the way for direct investigation of the robust topological properties of the TIs.

The large unsaturated magnetoresistance of Weyl semimetals

The Weyl semimetal (WSM) is a novel topological gapless state with promises exotic transport due to chiral anomaly. Recently, a family of nonmagnetic WSM candidates including TaAs, NbAs, NbP etc is confirmed by first principle calculation and experiments. The TaAs family are reported to display the large unsaturated magnetoresistance (XMR), which have not yet been explained. Here, we give a theoretical calculation of XMR based on the extended effective-medium approach to Weyl semimetals. We predict the power law of XMR at high magnetic field and the "turn-on" magnetic field, which are well in agreement with experiments data. Furthermore, we investigate the $θ$-dependence magnetoresistance and find the transition between the postive XMR and the negative magnetoresistance induced by chiral anomaly, which should be confirmed by further experiments.

Long-range Cooper pair splitter with high entanglement production rate

Cooper pairs in the superconductor are a natural source of spin entanglement. The existing proposals of the Cooper pair splitter can only realize a low efficiency of entanglement production, and its size is constrained by the superconducting coherence length. Here we show that a long-range Cooper pair splitter can be implemented in a normal metal-superconductor-normal metal (NSN) junction by driving a supercurrent in the S. The supercurrent results in a band gap modification of the S, which significantly enhances the crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) of the NSN junction and simultaneously quenches its elastic cotunneling. Therefore, a high entanglement production rate close to its saturation value can be achieved by the inverse CAR. Interestingly, in addition to the conventional entangled electron states between opposite energy levels, novel entangled states with equal energy can also be induced in our proposal.

Majorana and fractionally charged bound states in 1-D Rashba nanowire under spatially varying Zeeman fields

We study topological phase transitions in one dimensional (1-D) Rashba nanowire under a spatially varying Zeeman field when coupled to an $s$-wave superconductor substrate. We show that this system supports both Majorana bound states (MBS) and fractionally charged bound states (FBS) of Jackiw-Rebbi type. By disassembling Zeeman Hamiltonian into multiple helical components, we find that each helical component is relating to a corresponding topological region, characterized by the emergence of MBS. FBS arises in the overlapping gapped area created by any two helical components with topologically differing configuration, analogous to those formed at the knot in SSH model. We then develop a general criteria for the occurrence conditions of MBS and FBS. Our results suggest that systems with large Rashba spin orbit couple amplitude or in presence of weak Zeeman fields favor MBS, and otherwise FBS are more favorable. In the end, we demonstrate that spin components of zero energy bound states in topological phases are polarized in the plane perpendicular to Rashba vector, and the polarization oscillates with the variance of phases of the Zeeman field.

Detecting Fulde-Ferrell superconductors by an Andreev interferometer

We propose an Andreev interferometer, based on a branched Y-junction, to detect the finite momentum pairing in Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconductors. In this interferometer, the oscillation of subgap conductance is a unique function of phase difference between the two channels of the Y-junction, which is determined by the phase modulation of the order parameter in the FF superconductors. This interferometer has the potential not only to determine the magnitude but also the direction of the momentum of Cooper pairs in the FF superconductor. The possible applications of the interferometer in the identification of the finite momentum pairing in non-centrosymmetric superconductors are also discussed.

Mass classification and manipulation of zero modes in one-dimensional Dirac systems

We present a detailed mass classification of all possible zero-energy modes in one-dimensional Dirac systems. By introducing a linear mass term into the Dirac Hamiltonian, we find that the topologically protected zero-energy modes have the mass-momentum duality. Based on the duality, we classify three fundamental zero-energy modes in 2 * 2 subspaces respectively: solitons in sublattice subspace, Majorana zero modes in Nambu subspace, and magnetic zero-energy modes in spin subspace. Within the mechanism of mass competition, isolated zero-energy modes emerge by lifting Kramers degeneracy in the combined 8 * 8 inner space and its 4 * 4 subspaces. We also propose experimental methods of manipulating possible masses in Dirac Hamiltonians. Our classification scheme could easily be extended to 2D or 3D systems and applied to investigate topologically protected states in other fields.

Probing spin entanglement by gate-voltage-controlled interference of current correlation in quantum spin Hall insulators

We propose an entanglement detector composed of two quantum spin Hall insulators and a side gate deposited on one of the edge channels. For an ac gate voltage, the differential noise contributed from the entangled electron pairs exhibits the nontrivial step structures, from which the spin entanglement concurrence can be easily obtained. The possible spin dephasing effects in the quantum spin Hall insulators are also included.

Quantum computing through electron propagation in the edge states of quantum spin Hall systems

We propose to implement quantum computing based on electronic spin qubits by controlling the propagation of the electron wave packets through the helical edge states of quantum spin Hall systems (QSHs). Specfically, two non-commutative single-qubit gates, which rotate a qubit around z and y axes, can be realized by utilizing gate voltages either on a single QSH edge channel or on a quantum point contact structure. The more challenging two-qubit controlled phase gate can be implemented through the on-demand capacitive Coulomb interaction between two adjacent edge channels from two parallel QSHs. As a result, a universal set of quantum gates can be achieved in an all-electrical way. The fidelity and purity of the two-qubit gate are calculated with both time delay and finite width of the wave packets taken into consideration, which can reach high values with the existing high-quality single electron source.

Entanglement, subsystem particle numbers and topology in free fermion systems

We study the relationship between bipartite entanglement, subsystem particle number and topology in a half-filled free fermion system. It is proposed that the spin-projected particle numbers can distinguish the quantum spin Hall state from other states, and can be used to establish a new topological index for the system. Furthermore, we apply the new topological invariant to a disordered system and show that a topological phase transition occurs when the disorder strength is increased beyond a critical value. It is also shown that the subsystem particle number fluctuation displays behavior very similar to that of the entanglement entropy. This provides a lower-bound estimation for the entanglement entropy, which can be utilized to obtain an estimate of the entanglement entropy experimentally.

A Topological Spin Chern Pump

We propose a one-dimensional electron model with parameters modulated adiabatically in closed cycles, which can continuously pump spin to leads. By defining the spin-polarized Wannier functions, we show that the spin pump is protected by the spin Chern numbers, so that it is stable to perturbations violating the time-reversal symmetry and spin conservation. Our work demonstrates the possibility and principle to realize topological spin pumps independent of any symmetries, and also suggests a possible way to experimentally observe the bulk topological invariants.

Coupling-Matrix Approach to the Chern Number Calculation in Disordered Systems

The Chern number is often used to distinguish between different topological phases of matter in two-dimensional electron systems. A fast and efficient coupling-matrix method is designed to calculate the Chern number in finite crystalline and disordered systems. To show its effectiveness, we apply the approach to the Haldane model and the lattice Hofstadter model, the quantized Chern numbers being correctly obtained. The disorder-induced topological phase transition is well reproduced, when the disorder strength is increased beyond the critical value. We expect the method to be widely applicable to the study of topological quantum numbers.

Floquet Weyl Semimetal Induced by Off-Resonant Light

We propose that a Floquet Weyl semimetal state can be induced in three-dimensional topological insulators, either nonmagnetic or magnetic, by the application of off-resonant light. The virtual photon processes play a critical role in renormalizing the Dirac mass and so resulting in a topological semimetal with vanishing gap at Weyl points. The present mechanism via off-resonant light is quite different from that via on-resonant light, the latter being recently suggested to give rise to a Floquet topological state in ordinary band insulators.

Specular Andreev Reflection in Inversion-symmetric Weyl-semimetals

The electron-hole conversion at the normal-metal superconductor interface in inversion-symmetric Weyl semimetals is investigated with an effective two-band model. We find that the specular Andreev reflection of Weyl fermions has two unusual features. The Andreev conductance for s-wave BCS pairing states is anisotropic, depending on the angle between the line connecting a pair of Weyl points and the normal of the junction, due to opposite chirality carried by the paired electrons. For the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing states, the Andreev reflection spectrum is isotropic and is independent of the finite momentum of the Cooper pairs.

Stabilization of Quantum Spin Hall Effect by Designed Removal of Time-Reversal Symmetry of Edge States

The quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect is known to be unstable to perturbations violating time-reversal symmetry. We show that creating a narrow ferromagnetic (FM) region near the edge of a QSH sample can push one of the counterpropagating edge states to the inner boundary of the FM region, and leave the other at the outer boundary, without changing their spin polarizations and propagation directions. Since the two edge states are spatially separated into different "lanes", the QSH effect becomes robust against symmetry-breaking perturbations.
