Single-Pulse Study of the Pseudo-nulling Pulsar PSR J1820-0509 Based on FAST Observations

Using two observations obtained with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we present a detailed single-pulse analysis of the high-nulling pulsar PSR J1820-0509. We measure an exceptionally high nulling fraction of approximately 81.78%, significantly exceeding previous estimates from Parkes observations. The single-pulse energy distribution exhibits a clear bimodal structure, consistent with classical nulling behavior. However, stacking the identified null pulses reveals a statistically significant residual profile above the noise level, indicating that the nulls correspond to a very weak emission state rather than a complete cessation of radio emission. The pulsar shows clustered burst activities spanning several hundred rotation periods, with prominent quasi-periodicities at 1191 +/- 81 and 590 +/- 15 pulse periods in the two observations. Based on temporal clustering and integrated profile morphology, we identify three distinct emission modes (A, B, and C) and a pseudo-null state (D). These modes exhibit systematic differences in pulse morphology, polarization, and energy statistics. The pulse width-energy relations reveal clear transitions between low- and high-energy regimes. The energy distributions of Modes A and C are well described by lognormal functions, while Mode B follows a composite Gaussian-lognormal distribution. These results suggest that the radio emission of PSR J1820-0509 is governed by multiple quasi-stable magnetospheric states. The presence of weak emission during pseudo-nulls, together with systematic mode-dependent variations, supports the interpretation that pulsar nulling reflects transitions between different magnetospheric activity levels rather than a complete shutdown of emission.

An ideal Weyl semimetal induced by magnetic exchange

Weyl semimetals exhibit exceptional quantum electronic transport due to the presence of topologically-protected band crossings called Weyl nodes. The nodes come in pairs with opposite chirality, but their number and location in momentum space is otherwise material specific. Following the initial discoveries there is now a need for better material realizations, ideally comprising a single pair of Weyl nodes located at or very close to the Fermi level and in an energy window free from other overlapping bands. Here we propose the layered intermetallic EuCd$_2$As$_2$ to be such a system. We show that Weyl nodes in EuCd$_2$As$_2$ are magnetically-induced via exchange coupling, emerging when the Eu spins are aligned by a small external magnetic field. The identification of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ as a model magnetic Weyl semimetal, evidenced here by ab initio calculations, photoemission spectroscopy, quantum oscillations and anomalous Hall transport measurements, opens the door to fundamental tests of Weyl physics.

Directional massless Dirac fermions in a layered van der Waals material with one-dimensional long-range order

Exotic properties in single or few layers of van der Waals materials carry great promise for applications in nanoscaled electronics, optoelectronics and flexible devices. The established, distinct examples include extremely high mobility and superior thermal conductivity in graphene, a large direct band gap in monolayer MoS2 and quantum spin Hall effect in WTe2 monolayer, etc. All these exotic properties arise from the electron quantum confinement effect in the two-dimensional limit. Here we report a novel phenomenon due to one-dimensional (1D) confinement of carriers in a layered van der Waals material NbSi0.45Te2 revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, i.e. directional massless Dirac fermions. The 1D behavior of the carriers is directly related to a stripe-like structural modulation with the long-range translational symmetry only along the stripe direction, as perceived by scanning tunneling microscopy experiment. The four-fold degenerated node of 1D Dirac dispersion is essential and independent on band inversion, because of the protection by nonsymmorphic symmetry of the stripe structure. Our study not only provides a playground for investigating the striking properties of the essential directional massless Dirac fermions, but also introduces a unique monomer with 1D long-range order for engineering nano-electronic devices based on heterostructures of layered van der Waals materials.

Coupling of magnetic order and charge transport in the candidate Dirac semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$

We use resonant elastic x-ray scattering to determine the evolution of magnetic order in EuCd$_2$As$_2$ below $T_\textrm{N}=9.5$\,K, as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. We find an A-type antiferromagneticstructure with in-plane magnetic moments, and observe dramatic magnetoresistive effects associated with field-induced changes in the magnetic structure and domain populations. Our \textit{ab initio} electronic structure calculations indicate that the Dirac dispersion found in the nonmagnetic Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$ is also present in EuCd$_2$As$_2$, but is gapped for $T < T_\textrm{N}$ due to the breaking of $C_3$ symmetry by the magnetic structure.
