Pressure-Tuned Metamagnetism and Emergent Three-Body Interactions in CsFeCl$_3$

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the triangular-lattice quantum antiferromagnet CsFeCl$_3$ under high magnetic fields and high pressure. Pulsed-field magnetization for the magnetic field along the symmetric $c$ direction at ambient pressure reveals a magnetization process from a nonmagnetic singlet ground state with a nearly linear increase between 3.7 and 10.7 T, a plateau-like region, and then a sharp stepwise metamagnetic transition near 32 T. Wide frequency--field range electron spin resonance indicates that the low-field regime originates from the $J = 1$ manifold, while the high-field metamagnetic transition suggests a level crossing between the $J = 1$ and $J = 2$ lowest states. Pulsed-field magnetic susceptibilities measured with a proximity detector oscillator under high pressure show that the low-field nonmagnetic singlet phase is gradually suppressed, while the high-field metamagnetic transition evolves into an increasingly rich pattern of fractional steps. While the observations at low to intermediate fields can be understood within the established spin-1 description, the high-field regime requires a new perspective, which we provide through a projected spin-1/2 framework built from Zeeman-selected crystal-field states not related by time reversal. This construction naturally allows emergent three-body interactions on triangular plaquettes and explains the asymmetric evolution of the fractional steps in the magnetization. Our findings reveal that high-field effective spin models in quantum magnets with separated yet accessible crystal-field multiplets are not constrained to even-body couplings, but can naturally host odd-body terms, opening a broader avenue for realizing field-asymmetric magnetization processes and exotic phases beyond conventional even-body physics.

High-field spin-flop state in green dioptase

The high-field magnetic properties and magnetic order of the gem mineral green dioptase Cu$_6[$Si$_6$O$_{18}]\cdot 6$H$_2$O have been studied by means of single-crystal neutron diffraction in magnetic fields up to $21~$T and magnetization measurements up to $30~$T. In zero field, the Cu$^{2+}$-moments in the antiferromagnetic chains are oriented along the $c$-axis with a small off-axis tilt. For a field applied parallel to the $c$-axis, the magnetization shows a spin-flop-like transition at $B^*=12.2~$T at $1.5~$K. Neutron diffraction experiments show a smooth behavior in the intensities of the magnetic reflections without any change in the periodicity of the magnetic structure. Bulk and microscopic observations are well described by a model of ferromagnetically coupled antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains, taking into account a change of the local easy-axis direction. We demonstrate that the magnetic structure evolves smoothly from a deformed Néel state at low fields to a deformed spin-flop state in a high field via a strong crossover around $B^*$. The results are generalized for different values of interchain coupling and spin anisotropy.

Multipoint reweighting method and its applications to lattice QCD

The reweighting method is widely used in numerical studies of QCD, in particular, for the cases in which the conventional Monte-Carlo method cannot be applied directly, e.g., finite density QCD. However, the application range of the reweighing method is restricted due to several problems. One of the most severe problems here is the overlap problem. To solve it, we examine a multipoint reweighting method in which simulations at several simulation points are combined in the data analyses. We systematically study the applicability and limitation of the multipoint reweighting method in two-flavor QCD at zero density. Measuring histograms of physical quantities at a series of simulation points, we apply the multipoint reweighting method to calculate the meson masses as continuous functions of the gauge coupling $β$ and the hopping parameters $κ$. We then determine lines of constant physics and beta functions, which are needed in a calculation of the equation of state at finite temperature.

Multipoint reweighting method and beta functions for the calculation of QCD equation of state

We study a reweighting method aiming at numerical studies of QCD at finite density, in which the conventional Monte-Carlo method cannot be applied directly. One of the most important problems in the reweighting method is the overlap problem. To solve it, we propose to perform simulations at several simulation points and combine their results in the data analyses. In this report, we introduce this multipoint reweighting method and test if the method works well by measuring histograms of physical quantities. Using this method, we calculate the meson masses as continuous functions of the gauge coupling beta and the hopping parameters kappa in QCD at zero density. We then determine lines of constant physics in the (beta, kappa) space and evaluate the derivatives of the lattice spacing with respect to beta and kappa along the lines of constant physics (inverse of the beta functions), which are needed in a calculation of the equation of state.
