Noncommutativity and Lorentz Violation in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The experimental detection of the effects of noncommuting coordinates in electrodynamic phenomena depends on the magnitude of |θB|, where θis the noncommutativity parameter and B a background magnetic field. With the present upper bound on θ, given by θ_{\rm bound} \simeq 1/(10 {\rm TeV})^2, there was no large enough magnetic field in nature, including those observed in magnetars, that could give visible effects or, conversely, that could be used to further improve θ_{\rm bound}. On the other hand, recently it has been proposed that intense enough magnetic fields should be produced at the beginning of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We discuss here lepton pair production by free photons as one kind of signature of noncommutativity and Lorentz violation that could occur at RHIC or LHC. This allows us to obtain a more stringent bound on θ, given by 10^{-3} θ_{\rm bound}, if such "exotic" events do not occur.

An alternative heavy Higgs mass limit

After commenting on the present value of the Higgs particle mass from radiative corrections, we explore the phenomenological implications of an alternative, non-perturbative renormalization of the scalar sector where the mass of the Higgs particle does not represent a measure of observable interactions at the Higgs mass scale. In this approach the Higgs particle could be very heavy, even heavier than 1 TeV, and remain nevertheless a relatively narrow resonance.

Hybrid neutron stars within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and confinement

Recently, it has been shown that the standard Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is not able to reproduce the correct QCD behavior of the gap equation at large density, and therefore a different cutoff procedure at large momenta has ben proposed. We found that, even with this density dependent cutoff procedure, the pure quark phase in neutron stars (NS) interiors is unstable, and we argue that this could be related to the lack of confinement in the original NJL model.

Renormalization-Group flow for the field strength in scalar self-interacting theories

We consider the Renormalization-Group coupled equations for the effective potential V(ϕ) and the field strength Z(ϕ) in the spontaneously broken phase as a function of the infrared cutoff momentum k. In the k \to 0 limit, the numerical solution of the coupled equations, while consistent with the expected convexity property of V(ϕ), indicates a sharp peaking of Z(ϕ) close to the end points of the flatness region that define the physical realization of the broken phase. This might represent further evidence in favor of the non-trivial vacuum field renormalization effect already discovered with variational methods.

Renormalization Group Analysis of the Heavy Field Decoupling in a Scalar Theory

The problem of two coupled scalar fields, one with mass much lighter than the other is analysed by means of Wilson's renormalization group approach. Coupled equations for the potential and the wave function renormalization are obtained by means of the gradient expansion. The Appelquist-Carazzone theorem is checked at energies comparable with the light mass; the physics of the light field is also studied at energies comparable and greater than the heavy mass.
