The Higgs Working Group: Summary Report 2003

Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. Moreover, recent investigations of the MSSM Higgs sector and other extensions of the SM Higgs sector are presented. The potential of the LHC and a high-energy linear e+e- collider for the measurement of Higgs couplings is analyzed.

Les Houches Guidebook to Monte Carlo Generators for Hadron Collider Physics

Recently the collider physics community has seen significant advances in the formalisms and implementations of event generators. This review is a primer of the methods commonly used for the simulation of high energy physics events at particle colliders. We provide brief descriptions, references, and links to the specific computer codes which implement the methods. The aim is to provide an overview of the available tools, allowing the reader to ascertain which tool is best for a particular application, but also making clear the limitations of each tool.

Next-to-leading order jet distributions for Higgs boson production via weak-boson fusion

The weak-boson fusion process is expected to provide crucial information on Higgs boson couplings at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The achievable statistical accuracy demands comparison with next-to-leading order QCD calculations, which are presented here in the form of a fully flexible parton Monte Carlo program. QCD corrections are determined for jet distributions and are shown to be modest, of order 5 to 10% in most cases, but reaching 30% occasionally. Remaining scale uncertainties range from order 5% or less for distributions to below +-2% for the Higgs boson cross section in typical weak-boson fusion search regions.

Kinematical Limits on Higgs Boson Production via Gluon Fusion in Association with Jets

In this paper, we analyze the high-energy limits for Higgs boson plus two jet production. We consider two high-energy limits, corresponding to two different kinematic regions: a) the Higgs boson is centrally located in rapidity between the two jets, and very far from either jet; b) the Higgs boson is close to one jet in rapidity, and both of these are very far from the other jet. In both cases the amplitudes factorize into impact factors or coefficient functions connected by gluons exchanged in the t channel. Accordingly, we compute the coefficient function for the production of a Higgs boson from two off-shell gluons, and the impact factors for the production of a Higgs boson in association with a gluon or a quark jet. We include the full top quark mass dependence and compare this with the result obtained in the large top-mass limit.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

The Precision of Higgs Boson Measurements and Their Implications

The prospects for a precise exploration of the properties of a single or many observed Higgs bosons at future accelerators are summarized, with particular emphasis on the abilities of a Linear Collider (LC). Some implications of these measurements for discerning new physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) are also discussed.

The high-energy limit of H+2 jet production via gluon fusion

We consider Higgs + 2 jet production via gluon fusion in the limit where either one of the Higgs-jet or the dijet invariant masses become much larger than the typical momentum transfers in the scattering. These limits also occur naturally in Higgs production via weak-boson fusion. We show that the scattering amplitudes factorize in the high energy limit, and we obtain the relevant effective vertices.

Determining the Structure of Higgs Couplings at the LHC

Higgs boson production via weak boson fusion at the CERN Large Hadron Collider has the capability to determine the dominant CP nature of a Higgs boson, via the tensor structure of its coupling to weak bosons. This information is contained in the azimuthal angle distribution of the two outgoing forward tagging jets. The technique is independent of both the Higgs boson mass and the observed decay channel.

Finite-Width Effects in Top Quark Production at Hadron Colliders

Production cross sections for t\bar{t} and t\bar{t}j events at hadron colliders are calculated, including finite width effects and off resonance contributions for the entire decay chain, t --> bW --> b\ellν, for both top quarks. Resulting background rates to Higgs search at the CERN LHC are updated for inclusive H --> WW studies and for H --> ττand H --> WW decays in weak boson fusion events. Finite width effects are large, increasing t\bar{t}(j) rates by 20% or more, after typical cuts which are employed for top-background rejection.

Higgs production plus two jets at hadron colliders

In this talk we present a calculation of Higgs production via gluon fusion in association with two jets, including the full top-quark mass dependence, and compare it to the large top-mass limit. We find that the large top-mass limit is a good approximation as long as the Higgs mass is smaller than the top quark pair mass, and the jet transverse energies are smaller than the top mass. In addition, we compare Higgs production via gluon fusion and via weak-boson fusion, and consider final-state distributions, like the rapidity interval between the jets and the jet-jet azimuthal decorrelation, which may allow us to distinguish one fusion process from the other.

Gluon-fusion contributions to Higgs plus two-jet production

Real emission corrections to Higgs production via gluon fusion, at order alpha_s^4, lead to a Higgs plus two-jet final state. We present the calculation of these scattering amplitudes, as induced by top-quark triangle-, box- and pentagon-loop diagrams. These diagrams are evaluated analytically for arbitrary top mass m_t. We study the renormalization and factorization scale-dependence of the resulting H + 2 jet cross section, and discuss phenomenologically important distributions at the LHC. The gluon fusion results are compared to expectations for weak-boson fusion cross sections.

Higgs + 2 jets via gluon fusion

Real emission corrections to gg -> H, which lead to H+2 jet events, are calculated at order alpha_s^4. Contributions include top-quark triangles, boxes and pentagon diagrams and are evaluated analytically for arbitrary top mass m_t. This new source of H+2 jet events is compared to the weak-boson fusion cross section for a range of Higgs boson masses. The heavy top-mass approximation appears to work well for intermediate Higgs-boson masses, provided that the transverse momenta of the final-state partons are smaller than the top-quark mass.

H-->WW as the discovery mode for a light Higgs boson

The production cross section for a m_H=115 GeV, SM Higgs boson in weak boson fusion at the LHC is sizable. However, the branching fraction for H-->WW is expected to be relatively small. The signal, with its two forward jets, is sufficiently different from the main backgrounds that a signal to background ratio of better than 1:1 can nevertheless be obtained, with large enough rate to allow for a 5 sigma signal with 35 fb^{-1} of data. The H-->WW signal in weak boson fusion may thus prove to be the discovery mode for the Higgs boson at the LHC.

Observing an invisible Higgs boson

Given its weak coupling to bottom quarks and tau leptons, the Higgs boson may predominantly decay into invisible particles like gravitinos, neutralinos, or gravitons. We consider the manifestation of such an invisibly decaying Higgs boson in weak boson fusion at the CERN LHC. Distinctive kinematic distributions of the two quark jets of the signal as compared to Zjj and Wjj backgrounds allow to restrict the Higgs branching ratio to 'invisible' final states to some 13% with 10fb^{-1} of data, provided events with two energetic forward jets of high dijet invariant mass and with substantial missing transverse momentum can be triggered efficiently. It is also possible to discover these particles with masses up to 480 GeV in weak boson fusion, at the 5 sigma level, provided their invisible branching ratio is close to 100%.

Measurement of Higgs Properties at the LHC

A SM-like Higgs boson can be produced in a variety of channels at the LHC. By combining information from production via gluon fusion and weak boson fusion, various partial widths and the total Higgs boson width can be extracted. Expected accuracies for 200 fb^{-1} of data are in the 10% range.
