Subjet Multiplicity in Quark and Gluon Jets at D0

We measure the subjet multiplicity M in jets reconstructed with a successive combination type of jet algorithm (k_T). We select jets with 55 -1}{% \left< M_{g}\right> -1}= 1.91 \pm 0.04{\rm(stat)} ^{+0.23}_{-0.19} {\rm(sys)}$.

Neural Networks for Analysis of Top Quark Production

Neural networks (NNs) provide a powerful and flexible tool for selecting a signal from a larger background. The D0 collaboration has used them extensively in studying t-tbar decays. NNs were essential to the measurement of the t-tbar production cross section in the all-jets channel (t tbar -> b bbar qqqq, and were also used in the measurement of the mass of the top quark in the lepton+jets channel (t tbar -> b bbar l nu q qbar). This paper will describe two new applications of neural networks to top~quark analysis: the search for single top~quark production, and an effort to increase the sensitivity in the dilepton channel t tbar -> b bbar e mu nu nu beyond that achieved in the published analysis.

Measurement of the Transverse Momentum Distributions of W and Z Bosons Produced in pbar p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

We present measurements of the transverse momentum distribution of W and Z bosons produced in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The data were collected with the D0 detector at Fermilab during 1994-1996 Tevatron run. The results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on the perturbative QCD and soft gluon resummation combined calculation over the entire measured pt range p_T = 0-200 GeV/c).

A New measurement of the W boson mass at D0

We present a new measurement of the $W$ mass using the $W\to eν$ data from the DØforward detectors at the Fermilab Tevatron $p \bar p$ Collider. This is the first measurement of the $W$ mass with electron candidates in the range $1.5 < \mid η\mid < 2.5$. We present measurements of the $W$ mass using the transverse mass, the electron transverse momentum and the neutrino transverse momentum, and the combined result using all three techniques. The combination of the forward detector measurement with the previous measurements using the central detector gives a new precise measurement of the $W$ mass from DØ.

Measurement of the Angular Distribution of Electrons from W to e nu Decays Observed in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

We present a preliminary measurement of the electron angular distribution parameter alpha2 in W to e nu events using data collected by the D0 detector during the 1994--1995 Tevatron run. We compare our results with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD, which predicts an angular distribution of 1 +/- alpha1 cos theta* +alpha_2 cos^2 theta*, where theta* is the angle between the charged lepton and the antiproton in the Collins-Soper frame. In the presence of QCD corrections, the parameters alpha1 and alpha2 become functions of pT(W), the W boson transverse momentum. We present the first measurement of alpha_2 as a function of pT(W). This measurement is of importance, because it provides a test of next-to-leading order QCD corrections which are a non-negligible contribution to the W mass measurement.

Measurement of the inclusive differential cross section for Z bosons as a function of transverse momentum in pbarp collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV

We present a measurement of the differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum of the Z boson in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994--1996. We find good agreement between our data and the NNLO resummation prediction and extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for the resummed prediction from a fit to the differential cross section.

Extraction of the Width of the W Boson from Measurements of sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) and sigma(ppbar->Z+X)B(Z->e e) and their Ratio

We report on measurements of inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in ppbar collisions at sqrts=1.8 TeV.From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 inverse pb recorded in 1994--1995 using the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 2310 +- 10(stat) +- 50(syst) +- 100(lum) pb and sigma(ppbar->Z+X)B(Z->e e) = 221 +- 3(stat) +- 4(syst) +- 10(lum) pb. From these, we derive their Ratio R = 10.43 +- 0.15(stat) +- 0.20(syst) +- 0.10(NLO), B(W->e nu) = 0.1066 +- 0.0015(stat) +- 0.0021(syst) +- 0.0011(theory)+- 0.0011(NLO), and Gamma_W = 2.130 +- 0.030(stat) +- 0.041(syst) +- 0.022(theory) +- 0.021(NLO) GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into non-standard model final states, Gamma_W^{inv}, of 0.168 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992--1993 data gives R = 10.54 +- 0.24, Gamma_W = 2.107 +- 0.054 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit on Gamma_W^{inv} of 0.132 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 inverse nb taken at sqrts=630 GeV, we measure sigma(ppbar->W+X)B(W->e nu) = 658 +- 67 pb.

Studies of WW and WZ Production and Limits on Anomalous WWgamma and WWZ Couplings

Evidence of anomalous WW and WZ production was sought in pbar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The final states $WW (WZ) to mu-nu-jet-jet + X, WZ to mu-nu-e-e + X and WZ to e-nu-e-e + X were studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 90 pb-1. No evidence of anomalous diboson production was found. Limits were set on anomalous WWgamma and WWZ couplings and were combined with our previous results. The combined 95% confidence level anomalous coupling limits for Lambda=2 TeV are -0.25 LE Delta-kappa LE 0.39 (lambda=0) and -0.18 LE lambda LE 0.19 (Delta κ= 0), assuming the WWgamma couplings are equal to the WWZ couplings.

Search for Second Generation Leptoquark Pairs Decaying to μν+ jets in p-pbar Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

We report on a search for second generation leptoquarks (LQ) produced in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Second generation leptoquarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to either μor νand either a strange or a charm quark (q). Limits are placed on σ(p-pbar -> LQ-LQbar -> μν+ jets) as a function of the mass of the leptoquark. For equal branching ratios to μq and νq, second generation scalar leptoquarks with a mass below 160 GeV/c^2, vector leptoquarks with anomalous minimal vector couplings with a mass below 240 GeV/c^2, and vector leptoquarks with Yang-Mills couplings with a mass below 290 GeV/c^2, are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Search for Charged Higgs Bosons in Decays of Top Quark Pairs

We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks using 109.2 +- 5.8 pb^-1 of data recorded from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV by the D0 detector during 1992-96 at the Fermilab Tevatron. No evidence is found for charged Higgs production, and most parts of the [m(H+),tan(beta)] parameter space where the decay t -> bH+ has a branching fraction close to or larger than that for t -> bW+ are excluded at 95% confidence level. Assuming m(t) = 175 GeV and sigma(ppbar -> ttbar) = 5.5 pb, for m(H+) = 60 GeV, we exclude tan(beta) < 0.97 and tan(beta) > 40.9.

Search for Squarks and Gluinos in Events Containing Jets and a Large Imbalance in Transverse Energy

Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 79 pb-1, D0 has searched for events containing multiple jets and large missing transverse energy in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Observing no significant excess beyond what is expected from the standard model, we set limits on the masses of squarks and gluinos and on the model parameters m_0 and m_1/2, in the framework of the minimal low-energy supergravity models of supersymmetry. For tan(beta) = 2 and A_0 = 0, with mu < 0, we exclude all models with m_squark < 250 GeV/c^2. For models with equal squark and gluino masses, we exclude m < 260 GeV/c^2.

Search for High Mass Photon Pairs in p-pbar --> gamma-gamma-jet-jet Events at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV

A search has been carried out for events in the channel p-barp --> gamma gamma jet jet. Such a signature can characterize the production of a non-standard Higgs boson together with a W or Z boson. We refer to this non-standard Higgs, having standard model couplings to vector bosons but no coupling to fermions, as a "bosonic Higgs." With the requirement of two high transverse energy photons and two jets, the diphoton mass (m(gamma gamma)) distribution is consistent with expected background. A 90(95)% C.L. upper limit on the cross section as a function of mass is calculated, ranging from 0.60(0.80) pb for m(gamma gamma) = 65 GeV/c^2 to 0.26(0.34) pb for m(gamma gamma) = 150 GeV/c^2, corresponding to a 95% C.L. lower limit on the mass of a bosonic Higgs of 78.5 GeV/c^2.

Combined Limits on First Generation Leptoquarks from the CDF and D0 Experiments

We have combined recently published leptoquark results from the CDF and D0 Collaborations which yielded 95% CL lower limits on the first generation scalar leptoquark mass of 213 GeV and 225 GeV, respectively, under assumption of 100% branching fraction of the leptoquark decay into the eq channel. The combined limit from the two experiments is 242 GeV. This is the most stringent limit on the first generation scalar leptoquark mass to date.

The Dijet Mass Spectrum and a Search for Quark Compositeness in bar{p}p Collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV

Using the DZero detector at the 1.8 TeV pbarp Fermilab Tevatron collider, we have measured the inclusive dijet mass spectrum in the central pseudorapidity region |eta_jet| < 1.0 for dijet masses greater than 200 Gev/c^2. We have also measured the ratio of spectra sigma(|eta_jet| < 0.5)/sigma(0.5 < |eta_jet| < 1.0). The order alpha_s^3 QCD predictions are in good agreement with the data and we rule out models of quark compositeness with a contact interaction scale < 2.4 TeV at the 95% confidence level.

The Inclusive Jet Cross Section in pbar-p Collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV

We have made a precise measurement of the central inclusive jet cross section at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The measurement is based on an integrated luminosity of 92 pb-1 collected at the Fermilab Tevatron pbar-p Collider with the D-Zero detector. The cross section, reported as a function of jet transverse energy (ET >= 60 GeV) in the pseudorapidity interval |eta| <= 0.5, is in good agreement with predictions from next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics.

Search For Heavy Pointlike Dirac Monopoles

We have searched for central production of a pair of photons with high transverse energies in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV using $70 pb^{-1}$ of data collected with the DØdetector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994--1996. If they exist, virtual heavy pointlike Dirac monopoles could rescatter pairs of nearly real photons into this final state via a box diagram. We observe no excess of events above background, and set lower 95% C.L. limits of $610, 870, or 1580 GeV/c^2$ on the mass of a spin 0, 1/2, or 1 Dirac monopole.

Limits on Anomalous WWgamma and WWZ Couplings

Limits on the anomalous WWgamma and WWZ couplings are presented from a simultaneous fit to the data samples of three gauge boson pair final states in pbar-p collisions at sqrt(s)=1.8 TeV: Wgamma production with the W boson decaying to enu or munu, W boson pair production with both of the W bosons decaying to enu or munu, and WW or WZ production with one W boson decaying to enu and the other W boson or the Z boson decaying to two jets. Assuming identical WWgamma and WWZ couplings, 95 % C.L. limits on the anomalous couplings of -0.30<Delta kappa<0.43 (lambda = 0) and -0.20<lambda<0.20 (Delta kappa = 0) are obtained using a form factor scale Lambda = 2.0 TeV. Limits found under other assumptions on the relationship between the WWgamma and WWZ couplings are also presented.
