Note on Higgs Decay into Two Photons $H\to γγ$

The Higgs decay $H\to γγ$ duo to the virtual $W$-loop effect is revisited in the unitary gauge by using the symmetry-preserving and divergent-behavior-preserving loop regularization method, which is realized in the four dimensional space-time without changing original theory. Though the one-loop amplitude of $H\to γγ$ is finite as the Higgs boson in the standard model has no direct interaction with the massless photons at tree level, while it involves both tensor-type and scalar-type divergent integrals which can in general destroy the gauge invariance without imposing a proper regularization scheme to make them well-defined. As the loop regularization scheme can ensure the consistency conditions between the regularized tensor-type and scalar-type divergent irreducible loop integrals to preserve gauge invariance, we explicitly show the absence of decoupling in the limit $M_W/M_H\to0$ and obtain a result agreed exactly with the earlier one in the literature. We then clarify the discrepancy between the earlier result and the recent one obtained by R. Gastmans, S.L. Wu and T.T. Wu. The advantage of calculation in the unitary gauge becomes manifest that the non-decoupling arises from the longitudinal contribution of the $W$ gauge boson.

Controlling the second-harmonic in a phase matched negative-index metamaterial

Nonlinear metamaterials (NLMMs) have been predicted to support new and exciting domains in the manipulation of light, including novel phase matching schemes for wave mixing. Most notable is the so-called nonlinear-optical mirror, in which a nonlinear negative-index medium emits the generated frequency towards the source of the pump. For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear-optical mirror effect in a bulk negative-index NLMM, along with two other novel phase matching configurations, utilizing periodic poling to switch between the three phase matching domains.

Time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau Equation in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

We apply the closed time-path Green function formalism in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. First of all, we use this formalism to obtain the well-known gap equation for the quark condensate in a stationary homogeneous system. We have also used this formalism to obtain the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) equation and the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation for the chiral order parameter in an inhomogeneous system. In our derived GL and TDGL equations, there is no other parameters except for those in the original NJL model.

Analysis of Nonlinear Electromagnetic Metamaterials

We analyze the properties of a nonlinear metamaterial formed by integrating nonlinear components or materials into the capacitive regions of metamaterial elements. A straightforward homogenization procedure leads to general expressions for the nonlinear susceptibilities of the composite metamaterial medium. The expressions are convenient, as they enable inhomogeneous system of scattering elements to be described as a continuous medium using the standard notation of nonlinear optics. We illustrate the validity and accuracy of our theoretical framework by performing measurements on a fabricated metamaterial sample composed of an array of split ring resonators (SRRs) with packaged varactors embedded in the capacitive gaps in a manner similar to that of Wang et al. [Opt. Express 16, 16058 (2008)]. Because the SRRs exhibit a predominant magnetic response to electromagnetic fields, the varactor-loaded SRR composite can be described as a magnetic material with nonlinear terms in its effective magnetic susceptibility. Treating the composite as a nonlinear effective medium, we can quantitatively assess the performance of the medium to enhance and facilitate nonlinear processes, including second harmonic generation, three- and four-wave mixing, self-focusing and other well-known nonlinear phenomena. We illustrate the accuracy of our approach by predicting the intensity-dependent resonance frequency shift in the effective permeability of the varactor-loaded SRR medium and comparing with experimental measurements.
