All-optical convolution utilizing processing in memory based on a cold atomic ensemble

Processing in memory (PIM) has received significant attention due to its high efficiency, low latency, and parallelism. In optical computation, coherent memory is a crucial infrastructure for PIM frameworks. This study presents an all-optical convolution experiment conducted within computational storage based on a cold atomic ensemble. By exploiting the light-atom phase transfer facilitated by the electromagnetically induced transparency, we demonstrated spiral phase contrast processing of photon images in memory, resulting in the edge enhancement of retrieved images recorded using time-correlated photon imaging. In particular, adopting state-of-the-art atomic techniques provides a coherent memory lifetime exceeding 320 us for PIM operations. Our results highlight the significant potential of cold atomic ensembles as computational storage for developing all-optical PIM systems.

A practical applicable quantum-classical hybrid ant colony algorithm for the NISQ era

Quantum ant colony optimization (QACO) has drew much attention since it combines the advantages of quantum computing and ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm overcoming some limitations of the traditional ACO algorithm. However, due to the hardware resource limitations of currently available quantum computers, the practical application of the QACO is still not realized. In this paper, we developed a quantum-classical hybrid algorithm by combining the clustering algorithm with QACO algorithm. This extended QACO can handle large-scale optimization problems with currently available quantum computing resource. We have tested the effectiveness and performance of the extended QACO algorithm with the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP) as benchmarks, and found the algorithm achieves better performance under multiple diverse datasets. In addition, we investigated the noise impact on the extended QACO and evaluated its operation possibility on current available noisy intermediate scale quantum(NISQ) devices. Our work shows that the combination of the clustering algorithm with QACO effectively improved its problem solving scale, which makes its practical application possible in current NISQ era of quantum computing.

Highly efficient storage of 25-dimensional photonic qudit in a cold-atom-based quantum memory

Building an efficient quantum memory in high-dimensional Hilbert spaces is one of the fundamental requirements for establishing high-dimensional quantum repeaters, where it offers many advantages over two-dimensional quantum systems, such as a larger information capacity and enhanced noise resilience. To date, there have been no reports about how to achieve an efficient high-dimensional quantum memory. Here, we experimentally realize a quantum memory that is operational in Hilbert spaces of up to 25 dimensions with a storage efficiency of close to 60%. The proposed approach exploits the spatial-mode-independent interaction between atoms and photons which are encoded in transverse size-invariant orbital angular momentum modes. In particular, our memory features uniform storage efficiency and low cross-talk disturbance for 25 individual spatial modes of photons, thus allowing storing arbitrary qudit states programmed from 25 eigenstates within the high-dimensional Hilbert spaces, and eventually contributing to the storage of a 25-dimensional qudit state. These results would have great prospects for the implementation of long-distance high-dimensional quantum networks and quantum information processing.

Long-lived storage of orbital angular momentum quantum states

Quantum memories are indispensible for establishing a long-distance quantum network. High-dimensional quantum memories enable a higher channel capacity compared to a quantum memory working in a two-dimensional space, and have a lower requirement for storage lifetime in the field of quantum coomunication. The photonic transverse spatial modes such as Laguerra-Gaussian modes orbital angular momentum (OAM) are ideal candidates for encoding high-dimensional information, because it can form an infinite-dimensional Hilbert space. Although the faithful storage of an OAM qubit or qutrit has been realized in pioneering works, the longest storage lifetime for the former is only in the order of a few microseconds, and hundreds of nano-seconds for the latter. Here we implement a quantum memory for OAM qubits and qutrits using a cold atomic ensemble, the experimental results clearly show that our memory can still beat the classical limit after a storage time of $400μs$,which is two orders of magnitude higher than the previous work. The retrieval efficiency at this time equals to $44\%$ of the value when the storage time is set to be $10μs$. Our work is very promising for establishing a high dimensional quantum network.

Temporal Wheeler's delayed-Choice Experiment based on Cold Atomic Quantum Memory

Nowadays the most intriguing features of wave particle complementarity of single photon is exemplified by the famous Wheeler's delayed choice experiment in linear optics, nuclear magnetic resonance and integrated photonic device systems. Studying the wave particle behavior in light and matter interaction at single photon level is challenging and interesting, which gives how single photons complement in light and matter interaction. Here, we demonstrate a Wheeler's delayed choice experiment in an interface of light and atomic memory, in which the cold atomic memory makes the heralded single photon divided into a superposition of atomic collective excitation and leaked pulse, thus acting as memory beam splitters. We observe the morphing behavior between particle and wave of a heralded single photon by changing the relative proportion of quantum random number generator, the second memory efficiency, and the relative storage time of two memories. The reported results exhibit the complementarity behavior of single photon under the interface of light atom interaction.

Entanglement swapping via three-step quantum walk-like protocol

We present an entanglement swapping process for unknown nonmaximally entangled photonic states, where the standard Bell-state measurement is replaced by a three-step quantum walk-like state discrimination process, i.e., the practically nontrivial coupling element of two photons is replaced by manipulating their trajectories, which will greatly enrich the dynamics of the coupling between photons in realizing quantum computation, and reduce the integration complexity of optical quantum processing. In addition, the output state can be maximally entangled, which allows for entanglement concentration as well.

Polygamy relation for the Rényi-$α$ entanglement of assistance in multi-qubit systems

We prove a new polygamy relation of multi-party quantum entanglement in terms of Rényi-$α$ entanglement of assistance for $\left( {\sqrt 7 - 1} \right)/2\leqα\leq \left( {\sqrt 13 - 1} \right)/2$. This class of polygamy inequality reduces to the polygamy inequality based on entanglement of assistance since Rényi-$α$ entanglement is a generalization of entanglement of formation. We further show that the polygamy inequality also holds for the $μ$th power of Rényi-$α$ entanglement of assistance.

Monogamy relation of multi-qubit systems for squared Tsallis-\emph{q} entanglement

Tsallis-$q$ entanglement is a bipartite entanglement measure which is the generalization of entanglement of formation for $q$ tending to 1. We first expand the range of $q$ for the analytic formula of Tsallis-\emph{q} entanglement. For $\frac{5-\sqrt{13}}{2} \leq \emph{q} \leq \frac{5+\sqrt{13}}{2}$, we prove the monogamy relation in terms of the squared Tsallis-$q$ entanglement for an arbitrary multi-qubit systems. It is shown that the multipartite entanglement indicator based on squared Tsallis-$q$ entanglement still works well even when the indicator based on the squared concurrence loses its efficacy. We also show that the $μ$-th power of Tsallis-\emph{q} entanglement satisfies the monogamy or polygamy inequalities for any three-qubit state.

Geometric measure of quantum discord and the geometry of a class of two-qubit states

We investigate the geometric picture of the level surfaces of quantum entanglement and geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD) of a class of X-states, respectively. This pictorial approach provides us a direct understanding of the structure of entanglement and GMQD. The dynamic evolution of GMQD under two typical kinds of quantum decoherence channels is also investigated. It is shown that there exists a class of initial states for which the GMQD is not destroyed by decoherence in a finite time interval. Furthermore, we establish a factorization law between the initial and final GMQD, which allows us to infer the evolution of entanglement under the influences of the environment.

Storage and retrieval of continuous-variable polarization-entangled cluster states in atomic ensembles

We present a proposal for storing and retrieving a continuous-variable quadripartite polarization-entangled cluster state, using macroscopic atomic ensembles in a magnetic field. The Larmor precession of the atomic spins leads to a symmetry between the atomic canonical operators. In this scheme, each of the four spatially separated pulses passes twice through the respective ensemble in order to map the polarization-entangled cluster state onto the long-lived atomic ensembles. The stored state can then be retrieved by another four read-out pulses, each crossing the respective ensemble twice. By calculating the variances, we analyzed the fidelities of the storage and retrieval, and our scheme is feasible under realistic experimental conditions.

Genuine (k, m)-threshold controlled teleportation and its security

We propose genuine ($k$, $m$)-threshold controlling schemes for controlled teleportation via multi-particle entangled states, where the teleportation of a quantum state from a sender (Alice) to a receiver (Bob) is under the control of $m$ supervisors such that $k$ ($k\leq m$) or more of these supervisors can help Bob recover the transferred state. By construction, anyone of our quantum channels is a genuine multipartite entangled state of which any two parts are inseparable. Their properties are compared and contrasted with those of the well-known Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger, W, and linear cluster states, and also several other genuine multipartite entangled states recently introduced in literature. We show that our schemes are secure against both Bob's dishonesty and supervisors' treacheries. For the latter case, the game theory is utilized to prove that supervisors' cheats can be well prevented. In addition to their practical importance, our schemes are also useful in seeking and exploring genuine multipartite entangled states and opening another perspective for the applications of the game theory in quantum information science.

Effect of different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on entanglement in the Heisenberg XYZ chain

In this paper, we study the thermal entanglement in a two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ system with different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) couplings. We show that different DM coupling parameters have different influences on the entanglement and the critical temperature. In addition, we find that when $J_{i}$ ($i$-component spin coupling interaction) is the largest spin coupling coefficient, $D_{i}$ ($i$-component DM interaction) is the most efficient DM control parameter, which can be obtained by adjusting the direction of DM interaction.

Entanglement in the anisotropic Heisenberg XYZ model with different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and inhomogeneous magnetic field

We investigate the entanglement in a two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ system with different Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM) interaction and inhomogeneous magnetic field. It is found that the control parameters ($D_{x}$, $B_{x}$ and $b_{x}$) are remarkably different with the common control parameters ($D_{z}$,$B_{z}$ and $b_{z}$) in the entanglement and the critical temperature, and these x-component parameters can increase the entanglement and the critical temperature more efficiently. Furthermore, we show the properties of these x-component parameters for the control of entanglement. In the ground state, increasing $D_{x}$ (spin-orbit coupling parameter) can decrease the critical value $b_{xc}$ and increase the entanglement in the revival region, and adjusting some parameters (increasing $b_{x}$ and $J$, decreasing $B_{x}$ and $Δ$) can decrease the critical value $D_{xc}$ to enlarge the revival region. In the thermal state, increasing $D_{x}$ can increase the revival region and the entanglement in the revival region (for $T$ or $b_{x}$), and enhance the critical value $B_{xc}$ to make the region of high entanglement larger. Also, the entanglement and the revival region will increase with the decrease of $B_{x}$ (uniform magnetic field). In addition, small $b_{x}$ (nonuniform magnetic field) has some similar properties to $D_{x}$, and with the increase of $b_{x}$ the entanglement also has a revival phenomenon, so that the entanglement can exist at higher temperature for larger $b_{x}$.

Entanglement evolution of a two-qubit system with decay beyond rotating-wave approximation

Two noninteracting atoms, initially entangled in Bell states, are coupled to a one-mode cavity. Based on the reduced non-perturbative quantum master equation, the entanglement evolution of the two atoms with decay is investigated beyond rotating-wave approximation. It is shown that the counter-rotating wave terms have great influence on the disentanglement behavior. The phenomenon of entanglement sudden death and entanglement sudden birth will occur.

Thermal entanglement in the anisotropic Heisenberg XXZ model with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

The thermal entanglement is investigated in a two-qubit Heisenberg XXZ system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. It is shown that the entanglement can be efficiently controlled by the DM interaction parameter and coupling coefficient $J_{z}$. $D_{x}$(the x-component parameter of the DM interaction) has a more remarkable influence on the entanglement and the critical temperature than $D_{z}$(the z-component parameter of the DM interaction). Thus, by the change of DM interaction direction, we can get a more efficient control parameter to increase the entanglement and the critical temperature.

Teleportation of two-particle entangled state via cluster state

We present two schemes for teleporting an unknown two-particle entangled state from a sender (Alice) to a receiver (Bob) via a four-particle entangled cluster state. As it is shown, the unknown two-particle entangled state can be teleported perfectly, and the successful possibilities and fidelities of the two schemes both reach unit.
