Hierarchical Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Carbon-Aware AI Data Centers in Power Distribution Systems

Eco-friendly energy management for artificial intelligence data centers (AIDCs) is crucial because of the significant increase in energy consumption-induced carbon emissions from AIDCs resulting from the rapid expansion of AI applications. This paper proposes a hierarchical carbon-aware multi-agent reinforcement learning (CA-MARL) framework for robust and efficient operations of AIDCs under uncertainties while ensuring low-carbon operation of power distribution systems. The framework comprises a workload manager (WM) agent and multiple local AIDC agents trained using a multi-agent transformer method, corresponding to a global AIDC aggregator and a local AIDC operator, respectively. Leveraging AIDC operation data along with nodal carbon intensity (NCI) calculated from the carbon emission flow-integrated distribution system operator problem, the WM agent spatially allocates AI training and inference jobs among all AIDCs. Based on the jobs allocated from the WM agent and NCI information, each AIDC agent schedules economical and eco-friendly operations of the AIDC by performing the following tasks: i) temporal shifting of training jobs, ii) spatial allocation of training graphics processing unit (GPU) blocks and inference GPUs within the AIDC, and iii) control of the supply air temperature of the cooling system. The effectiveness of the proposed framework was assessed using an IEEE 33-node power distribution system.

Friction Tubes to Generate Nanobubble Ozone Water with an Increased Half-Life for Virucidal Activity

Nanobubbles and related technologies are expected to be highly utilized in water resource-based industries such as water purification, crops, horticulture, medicine, bio, and sterilization. Ozone, a chemical with high sterilizing power, is known as a natural substance that is reduced to oxygen and water after reacting with pollutants. Ozone water, which is generated by dissolving ozone in water, has been used in various industrial sectors such as medical care, food, and environment. Due to the unstable molecular state of ozone, however, it is difficult to produce, use, and supply ozone at industrial sites in a stable manner. This study proposed a method for constructing a system that can generate high-concentration ozone water in large quantities using low power in real time and maintaining the concentration of the generated ozone water over the long term. Friction tubes (called 'nanotube') played a key role to generate nanobubble ozone water with an increased half-life for virus killing activity. In addition, the safety of ozone water during its spray into the air was explained, and virucidal activity test cases for the influenza A (H1N1/A/PR8) and COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus using high-concentration ozone water as well as its technical efficacy were described.

Generation of high concentration nanobubbles based on friction tubes

Nanobubble-related technologies have been confirmed to be useful in various fields such as climate change and the environment as well as water-based industries such as water purification, crops, horticulture, medical care, bio, and sterilization. However, a method of mass production in real time enough to apply nano-bubbles to the industry has not yet been developed. We explored the mechanism of nano-bubble water generation by friction between water and walls and developed a tube device applying the shape of the flow path to maximize the friction in the fluid passing through the flow path. It also describes the case of real-time and low-power mass production of nanobubbles and its technical utility. We found that the friction of nanotubes alone can easily and quickly improve the production of nanobubbles with small particle size in real time; by increasing the shearing pressure while increasing the effective friction constant value, the particle size of nanobubbles can be smaller while increasing the particle concentration.

Sample-Efficient Learning for a Surrogate Model of Three-Phase Distribution System

A surrogate model that accurately predicts distribution system voltages is crucial for reliable smart grid planning and operation. This letter proposes a fixed-point data-driven surrogate modeling method that employs a limited dataset to learn the power-voltage relationship of an unbalanced three-phase distribution system. The proposed surrogate model is designed using a fixed-point load-flow equation, and the stochastic gradient descent method with an automatic differentiation technique is employed to update the parameters of the surrogate model using complex power and voltage samples. Numerical examples in IEEE 13-bus, 37-bus, and 123-bus systems demonstrate that the proposed surrogate model can outperform surrogate models based on the deep neural network and Gaussian process regarding prediction accuracy and sample efficiency

Distributionally Robust Safety Filter for Learning-Based Control in Active Distribution Systems

Operational constraint violations may occur when deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents interact with real-world active distribution systems to learn their optimal policies during training. This letter presents a universal distributionally robust safety filter (DRSF) using which any DRL agent can reduce the constraint violations of distribution systems significantly during training while maintaining near-optimal solutions. The DRSF is formulated as a distributionally robust optimization problem with chance constraints of operational limits. This problem aims to compute near-optimal actions that are minimally modified from the optimal actions of DRL-based Volt/VAr control by leveraging the distribution system model, thereby providing constraint satisfaction guarantee with a probability level under the model uncertainty. The performance of the proposed DRSF is verified using the IEEE 33-bus and 123-bus systems.
