Quantum Gravity: A Brief History of Ideas and Some Prospects

We present a bird's-eye survey on the development of fundamental ideas of quantum gravity, placing emphasis on perturbative approaches, string theory, loop quantum gravity, and black hole thermodynamics. The early ideas at the dawn of quantum gravity as well as the possible observations of quantum gravitational effects in the foreseeable future are also briefly discussed.

Manifestations of topological band crossings in bulk entanglement spectrum: An analytical study for integer quantum Hall states

We consider integer quantum Hall states and calculate bulk entanglement spectrum by formulating the correlation matrix in guiding center representation. Our analytical approach is based on the projection operator with redefining the inner product of states in Hilbert space to take care of the restriction imposed by the (rectangle-tiled) checkerboard partition. The resultant correlation matrix contains the coupling constants between states of different guiding centers parameterized by magnetic length and the period of partition. We find various band-crossings by tuning the flux $Φ$ threading each chekerborad pixel and by changing filling factor $ν$. When $ν=1$ and $Φ=2π$, or $ν=2$ and $Φ=π$, one Dirac band crossing is found. For $ν=1$ and $Φ=π$, the band crossings are in the form of nodal line, enclosing the Brillouin zone. As for $ν=2$ and $Φ=2π$, the doubled Dirac point, or the quadratic point, is seen. Besides, we infer that the quadratic point is protected by C$_4$ symmetry of the checkerboard partition since it evolves into two separate Dirac points when the symmetry is lowered to C$_2$. In addition, we also identify the emerging symmetries responsible for the symmetric bulk entanglement spectra, which are absent in the underlying quantum Hall states.

Loop Quantum Gravity

This article presents an "in-a-nutshell" yet self-contained introductory review on loop quantum gravity (LQG) -- a background-independent, nonperturbative approach to a consistent quantum theory of gravity. Instead of rigorous and systematic derivations, it aims to provide a general picture of LQG, placing emphasis on the fundamental ideas and their significance. The canonical formulation of LQG, as the central topic of the article, is presented in a logically orderly fashion with moderate details, while the spin foam theory, black hole thermodynamics, and loop quantum cosmology are covered briefly. Current directions and open issues are also summarized.

High-order Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations of the Dirac and Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonians in the weak-field limit

The low-energy and weak-field limit of Dirac equation can be obtained by an order-by-order block diagonalization approach to any desired order in the parameter $π/mc$ ($π$ is the kinetic momentum and $m$ is the mass of the particle). In the previous work, it has been shown that, up to the order of $(π/mc)^8$, the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation may be expressed as a closed form and consistent with the classical Hamiltonian, which is the sum of the classical relativistic Hamiltonian for orbital motion and the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) Hamiltonian for spin precession. In order to investigate the exact validity of the correspondence between classical and Dirac-Pauli spinors, it is necessary to proceed to higher orders. In this paper, we investigate the FW representation of the Dirac and Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonians by using Kutzelnigg's diagonalization method. We show that the Kutzelnigg diagonalization method can be further simplified if nonlinear effects of static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields are neglected (in the weak-field limit). Up to the order of $(π/mc)^{14}$, we find that the FW transformation for both Dirac and Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonians is in agreement with the classical Hamiltonian with the gyromagnetic ratio given by $g=2$ and $g\neq2$ respectively. Furthermore, with higher-order terms at hand, it is demonstrated that the unitary FW transformation admits a closed form in the low-energy and weak-field limit.

Larmor precession of the octet baryons in view of the general QCD parametrization

We apply general QCD parametrization to describe an octet baryon at rest in a static and uniform magnetic field, in order to demonstrate a dynamical implementation of the hadron model. The derived evolution has the asymptote of Larmor precession, governed by an effective magnetic dipole moment coupling. The parameters appear in the effective magnetic dipole moment has been studied in the original works in kinematic settings. Here we show that the parameters have actual dynamical meaning, and are indeed measured by the process.

Correspondence between classical and Dirac-Pauli spinors in view of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation

The classical dynamics for a charged spin particle is governed by the Lorentz force equation for orbital motion and by the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi (T-BMT) equation for spin precession. In static and homogeneous electromagnetic fields, it has been shown that the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transform of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian, which describes the relativistic quantum theory for a spin-1/2 particle, is consistent with the classical Hamiltonian (with both the orbital and spin parts) up to the order of $1/m^{14}$ ($m$ is the particle's mass) in the low-energy/weak-field limit. In this paper, we extend this correspondence to the case of inhomogeneous fields. Regardless of the field gradient (e.g., Stern-Gerlach) force, the T-BMT equation is unaltered and thus the classical Hamiltonian remains the same, but subtleties arise and need to be clarified. For the relativistic quantum theory, we apply Eriksen's method to obtain the exact FW transformations for the two special cases, which in conjunction strongly suggest that, in the weak-field limit, the FW transformed Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian (except for the Darwin term) is in agreement with the classical Hamiltonian in a manner that classical variables correspond to quantum operators via a specific Weyl ordering. Meanwhile, the Darwin term is shown to have no classical correspondence.

Timeless path integral for relativistic quantum mechanics

Starting from the canonical formalism of relativistic (timeless) quantum mechanics, the formulation of timeless path integral is rigorously derived. The transition amplitude is reformulated as the sum, or functional integral, over all possible paths in the constraint surface specified by the (relativistic) Hamiltonian constraint, and each path contributes with a phase identical to the classical action divided by $\hbar$. The timeless path integral manifests the timeless feature as it is completely independent of the parametrization for paths. For the special case that the Hamiltonian constraint is a quadratic polynomial in momenta, the transition amplitude admits the timeless Feynman's path integral over the (relativistic) configuration space. Meanwhile, the difference between relativistic quantum mechanics and conventional nonrelativistic (with time) quantum mechanics is elaborated on in light of timeless path integral.

Loop quantization of spherically symmetric midisuperspaces and loop quantum geometry of the maximally extended Schwarzschild spacetime

We elaborate on the Ashtekar's formalism for spherically symmetric midisuperspaces and, for loop quantization, propound a new quantization scheme which yields a graph-preserving Hamiltonian constraint operator and by which one can impose the fundamental discreteness of loop quantum gravity a la the strategy of "improved" dynamics in loop quantum cosmology (LQC). Remarkable consequences are inferred at the heuristic level of effective dynamics: first, consistency of the constraint algebra regarding the Hamiltonian and diffeomorphism constraints fixes the improved quantization scheme to be of the form reminiscent of the improved scheme in LQC which preserves scaling invariance; second, consistency regarding two Hamiltonian constraints further demands the inclusion of higher order holonomy corrections and fixes a ratio factor of 2 for the improved scheme. It is suggested that the classical singularity is resolved and replaced by a quantum bounce which bridges a classical solution to another classical phase. However, the constraints violate briefly during the bouncing period, indicating that one cannot make sense of symmetry reduction by separating the degrees of freedom of the full theory into spherical and non-spherical ones in the vicinity of the quantum bounce, although the heuristic effective dynamics can still give a reliable semiclassical description of large-scale physics. Particularly, for the Schwarzschild solution in accordance with the Kruskal coordinates, revealing insights lead us to conjecture the complete quantum extension of the Schwarzschild spacetime: the black hole is evaporated via the Hawking radiation and meanwhile the quantum spacetime is largely extended from the classical one via the quantum bounce, suggesting that the information paradox might be resolved.

Numerical simulation of time delay interferometry for a LISA-like mission with the simplification of having only one interferometer

In order to attain the requisite sensitivity for LISA, laser frequency noise must be suppressed below the secondary noises such as the optical path noise, acceleration noise etc. In a previous paper (Dhurandhar et al., Class. Quantum Grav., 27, 135013, 2010), we have found a large family of second-generation analytic solutions of time delay interferometry with one arm dysfunctional, and we also estimated the laser noise due to residual time-delay semi-analytically from orbit perturbations due to Earth. Since other planets and solar-system bodies also perturb the orbits of LISA spacecraft and affect the time delay interferometry (TDI), we simulate the time delay numerically in this paper for all solutions with the generation number n \leq 3. We have worked out a set of 3-year optimized mission orbits of LISA spacecraft starting at January 1, 2021 using the CGC2.7 ephemeris framework. We then use this numerical solution to calculate the residual optical path differences in the second-generation solutions of our previous paper, and compare with the semi-analytic error estimate. The accuracy of this calculation is better than 1 cm (or 30 ps). The maximum path length difference, for all configuration calculated, is below 1 m (3 ns). This is well below the limit under which the laser frequency noise is required to be suppressed. The numerical simulation in this paper can be applied to other space-borne interferometers for gravitational wave detection with the simplification of having only one interferometer.

High Chern number quantum anomalous Hall phases in graphene ribbons with Haldane orbital coupling

We investigate possible phase transitions among the different quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) phases in a zigzag graphene ribbon under the influence of the exchange field. The effective tight-binding Hamiltonian for graphene is made up of the hopping term, the Kane-Mele and Rashba spin-orbit couplings as well as the Haldane orbital term. We find that the variation of the exchange field results in bulk gap-closing phenomena and phase transitions occur in the graphene system. If the Haldane orbital coupling is absent, the phase transition between the chiral (anti-chiral) edge state $ν=+2$ ($ν=-2$) and the pseudo-quantum spin Hall state ($ν=0$) takes place. Surprisingly, when the Haldane orbital coupling is taken into account, an intermediate QSH phase with two additional edge modes appears in between phases $ν=+2$ and $ν=-2$. This intermediate phase is therefore either the hyper-chiral edge state of high Chern number $ν=+4$ or anti-hyper-chiral edge state of $ν=-4$ when the direction of exchange field is reversed. We present the band structures, edge state wave functions and current distributions of the different QAH phases in the system. We also report the critical exchange field values for the QAH phase transitions.

Unimodular Loop Quantum Cosmology

Unimodular gravity is based on a modification of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action that allows one to recover general relativity with a dynamical cosmological constant. It also has the interesting property of providing, as the momentum conjugate to the cosmological constant, an emergent clock variable. In this paper we investigate the cosmological reduction of unimodular gravity, and its quantization within the framework of flat homogeneous and isotropic loop quantum cosmology. It is shown that the unimodular clock can be used to construct the physical state space, and that the fundamental features of the previous models featuring scalar field clocks are reproduced. In particular, the classical singularity is replaced by a quantum bounce, which takes place in the same condition as obtained previously. We also find that requirement of semi-classicality demands the expectation value of the cosmological constant to be small (in Planck units). The relation to spin foam models is also studied, and we show that the use of the unimodular time variable leads to a unique vertex expansion.

Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for a Dirac-Pauli dyon and the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation

The classical dynamics for a charged point particle with intrinsic spin is governed by a relativistic Hamiltonian for the orbital motion and by the Thomas-Bargmann-Michel-Telegdi equation for the precession of the spin. It is natural to ask whether the classical Hamiltonian (with both the orbital and spin parts) is consistent with that in the relativistic quantum theory for a spin-1/2 charged particle, which is described by the Dirac equation. In the low-energy limit, up to terms of the 7th order in $1/E_g$ ($E_g=2mc^2$ and $m$ is the particle mass), we investigate the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac Hamiltonian in the presence of homogeneous and static electromagnetic fields and show that it is indeed in agreement with the classical Hamiltonian with the gyromagnetic ratio being equal to 2. Through electromagnetic duality, this result can be generalized for a spin-1/2 dyon, which has both electric and magnetic charges and thus possesses both intrinsic electric and magnetic dipole moments. Furthermore, the relativistic quantum theory for a spin-1/2 dyon with arbitrary values of the gyromagnetic and gyroelectric ratios can be described by the Dirac-Pauli equation, which is the Dirac equation with augmentation for the anomalous electric and anomalous magnetic dipole moments. The FW transformation of the Dirac-Pauli Hamiltonian is shown, up to the 7th order again, to be also in accord with the classical Hamiltonian.

Cosmological inflation driven by holonomy corrections of loop quantum cosmology

At the level of heuristic effective dynamics, we investigate the cosmological inflation with holonomy corrections of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) in the $k=0$ Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model with a single inflaton field subject to a simple potential. In the symmetric bouncing scenario of LQC, the condition for occurrence of the quantum bounce naturally and uniquely fixes the initial conditions at the bouncing epoch. Around the quantum bounce, the universe undergoes a short super-inflationary phase, which drives the inflaton field to its potential hill and thus sets the proper initial conditions for the standard slow-roll inflation. Between the super-inflation and the standard inflation, there is a non-inflationary phase, which violates the slow-roll condition. The violation of slow roll is expected to give some suppression on the low angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background and different orders of holonomy corrections shall yield different suppressions.

Loop quantum cosmology with higher order holonomy corrections

With a well-motivated extension of higher order holonomy corrections, the quantum theory of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) for the $k=0$ Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model (with a free massless scalar) is rigorously formulated. The analytical investigation reveals that, regardless of the order of holonomy corrections and for any arbitrary states, the matter density remains finite, bounded from above by an upper bound, which equals the critical density obtained at the level of heuristic effective dynamics. Particularly, with all orders of corrections included, the dynamical evolution is shown to follow the bouncing scenario in which two Wheeler-DeWitt (WDW) solutions (expanding and contracting) are bridged together through the quantum bounce. These observations provide further evidence that the quantum bounce is essentially a consequence of the intrinsic discreteness of LQC and LQC is fundamentally different from the WDW theory. Meanwhile, the possibility is also explored that the higher order holonomy corrections can be interpreted as a result of admitting generic SU(2) representations for the Hamiltonian constraint operators.

How loopy is the quantum bounce? A heuristic analysis of higher order holonomy corrections in LQC

A well-motivated extension of higher order holonomy corrections in loop quantum cosmology (LQC) for the $k=0$ Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model is investigated at the level of heuristic effective dynamics. It reveals that the quantum bounce is generic, regardless of the order of corrections, and the matter density remains finite, bounded from above by an upper bound in the regime of the Planckian density, even if all orders of corrections are included. This observation provides further evidence that the quantum bounce is essentially a consequence of the loopy nature (i.e. intrinsic discreteness) of LQC and LQC is fundamentally different from the Wheeler-DeWitt theory; it also encourages one to construct the quantum theory of LQC with the higher order holonomy corrections, which might be understood as related to the higher $j$ representations in the Hamiltonian operator of loop quantum gravity.

Effective equations of motion for constrained quantum systems: A study of the Bianchi I loop quantum cosmology

A new mathematical framework is formulated to derive the effective equations of motion for the constrained quantum system which possesses an internal clock. In the realm close to classical behavior, the quantum evolution is approximated by a finite system of coupled but ordinary differential equations adhered to the weakly imposed Hamiltonian constraint. For the simplified version of loop quantum cosmology in the Bianchi I model with a free massless scalar filed, the resulting effective equations of motion affirm the bouncing scenario predicted by the previous studies: The big bang singularity is resolved and replaced by the big bounces, which take place up to three times, once in each diagonal direction, whenever the directional density approaches the critical value in the regime of Planckian density. It is also revealed that back-reaction arises from the quantum corrections and modifies the precise value of the directional density at the bouncing epoch. Additionally, as an example of symmetry reduction, we study isotropy emerging from the anisotropic Bianchi I model in the context of effective equations of motion.

Phenomenological loop quantum geometry of the Schwarzschild black hole

The interior of a Schwarzschild black hole is investigated at the level of phenomenological dynamics with the discreteness corrections of loop quantum geometry implemented in two different improved quantization schemes. In one scheme, the classical black hole singularity is resolved by the quantum bounce, which bridges the black hole interior with a white hole interior. In the other scheme, the classical singularity is resolved and the event horizon is also diffused by the quantum bounce. Jumping over the quantum bounce, the black hole gives birth to a baby black hole with a much smaller mass. This lineage continues as each classical black hole brings forth its own descendant in the consecutive classical cycle, giving the whole extended spacetime fractal structure, until the solution eventually descends into deep Planck regime, signaling a breakdown of the semiclassical description. The issues of scaling symmetry and no-hair theorem are also discussed.

Phenomenological dynamics of loop quantum cosmology in Kantowski-Sachs spacetime

The fundamental theory and the semiclassical description of loop quantum cosmology (LQC) have been studied in the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker and Bianchi I models. As an extension to include both anisotropy and intrinsic curvature, this paper investigates the cosmological model of Kantowski-Sachs spacetime with a free massless scalar field at the level of phenomenological dynamics with the LQC discreteness corrections. The LQC corrections are implemented in two different improved quantization schemes. In both schemes, the big bang and big crunch singularities of the classical solution are resolved and replaced by the big bounces when the area or volume scale factor approaches the critical values in the Planck regime measured by the reference of the scalar field momentum. Symmetries of scaling are also noted and suggest that the fundamental spatial scale (area gap) may give rise to a temporal scale. The bouncing scenarios are in an analogous fashion of the Bianchi I model, naturally extending the observations obtained previously.
