Strong quasi-particle tunneling study in the paired quantum Hall states

The quasi-particle tunneling phenomena in the paired fractional quantum Hall states are studied. A single point-contact system is first considered. Because of relevancy of the quasi-particle tunneling term, the strong tunneling regime should be investigated. Using the instanton method it is shown that the strong quasi-particle tunneling regime is described as the weak electron tunneling regime effectively. Expanding to the network model the paired quantum Hall liquid to insulator transition is discussed.

The edge state network model and the global phase diagram

The effects of randomness are investigated in the fractional quantum Hall systems. Based on the Chern-Simons Ginzburg-Landou theory and considering relevant quasi-particle tunneling, the edge state network model for the hierarchical state is introduced and the plateau-plateau transition and liquid-insulator transition are discussed. This model has duality which corresponds to the relation of the quantum Hall liquid phase and the Hall insulating phase and reveals a mechanism in the weak coupling regime.

Composite Fermions with Spin Freedom

General rule for the composite fermion transformation, when the spins of the electrons are not polarized is derived. Condition for the quantum phase transition between various spin states is obtained based on the rule. This rule gives foundation for the experimental determination of the mass and $g$-factor of the composite fermion.

Edge State Transport of Separately Contacted Bilayer Systems in the Fractional Quantum Hall Regime

Hall and diagonal resistances of bilayer fractional quantum Hall systems are discussed theoretically. The bilayers have electrodes attached separately to each layer. They are assumed to be coupled weakly by interlayer tunneling, while the interlayer Coulomb interaction is negligibly small. It is shown that source-drain voltage dependence of the resistances reflects the Luttinger liquid parameter of the edge state.

QHE of Bilayer Systems in the Presence of Tunneling -- $ν=1/q$ case --

Transport properties of bilayer quantum Hall systems at $ν=1/q$, where $q$ is an odd integer, are investigated. The edge theory is used for the investigation, since tunneling between the two layers is assumed to occur on the edge of the sample because of the bulk incompressibility. It is shown that in the case of the independent Laughlin state tunneling is irrelevant when $ν<1/2$ in the low temperature and long wave length limit. The temperature dependence of two-terminal conductance of the system in which only one of the two layers is contacted with electrode is discussed.

Comment on ``Effective Mass and g-Factor of Four Flux Quanta Composite Fermions"

In a recent Letter, Yeh et al.[Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 592 (1999)] have shown beautiful experimental results which indicate that the composite fermions with four flux quanta ($^4$CF) behave as fermions with mass and spin just like those with two flux quanta. They observed the collapse of the fractional quantum Hall gaps when the following condition is satisfied with some integer $j$, $g^*μ_{\rm B}B_{\rm tot} = j \hbar ω_{\rm c}^*$, where $g^*$ and $ω_{\rm c}^*$ are the g-factor and the cyclotron frequency of the $^4$CF, respectively. However, in their picture the gap at the Fermi energy remains always finite even if the above condition is satisfied, thus the reason of the collapse was left as a mystery. In this comment it is shown that part of the mystery is resolved by considering the electron-hole symmetry properly.

Wave Function of the Largest Skyrmion on a Sphere

It has been clarified that charged excitation known as a skyrmion exists around the ferromagnetic ground state at the Landau level filling factor $ν=1/q$, where $q$ is an odd integer. An infinite sized skyrmion is realized in the absence of the spin-Zeeman splitting or for double-layered systems. Analytical form of the wave function is identified at $ν=1$ and $ν=1/3$ through exact diagonalization of the Hamiltonian for finite sized spherical systems. It is clarified that the skyrmion wave functions at $ν=1$ and $ν=1/3$ are qualitatively different: they are not related by the composite fermion transformation. Long-range behavior of the skyrmion wave function around $ν=1$ is shown to be consistent with the semiclassical picture of the skyrmion.

Inter-layer Edge Tunneling and Transport Properties in Double-Layer Quantum Hall Systems

A theory of transport in the quantum Hall regime is developed for separately contacted double-layer electron systems. Inter-layer tunneling provides a channel for equilibration of the distribution functions in the two layers and influences transport properties through the resulting influence on steady-state distribution functions. Resistences for various configurations of the electrodes are calculated as a function of the inter-layer tunneling amplitude. The effect of misalignment of the edges of the two layers and the effect of tilting the magnetic field away from the normal to the layers on the inter- layer tunneling amplitude near the sample edges are investigated. The results obtained in this work is consistent with recent experiments.

Angular Dependent Magnetoresistance Oscillation of a Quasi-Two-Dimensional System in a Periodic Potential

(BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$[M:K,Rb,Tl] shows typical two-dimensional angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (ADMRO) at high temperature (T$>$8K), but at lower temperature it shows anomalously large magnetoresistance, and the ADMRO pattern changes. These low temperature behaviors are explained as effects of a periodic potential. The present explanation is different from that by Kartsovnik et al. [J. Phys. I France {\bf 3} (1993) 1187] in that reconstruction of the cylindrical Fermi surface into an open Fermi surface is not assumed. It is also predicted that if the periodic potential exists at quantizing magnetic field, resistivity peak of new origin should be observed.

Excitation Spectrum of a Double Quantum Well System

The collective charge-excitation spectrum of a double quantum well system in a strong magnetic field is obtained within the random phase approximation. Correction to the spectrum coming from the finiteness of the magnetic field is calculated up to the first order in inverse of the magnetic field. Dependencies on the magnetic field of (i) the velocity of long wave length excitation and (ii) the phase boundary of the quantum Hall state signaled by the softening of the roton minimum of the spectrum are discussed. Keywords: quantum Hall effect, two dimensional electrons, strong magnetic field, double quantum well, excitonic state

Fractional Quantum Hall States in Narrow Channels

A model system is considered where two dimensional electrons are confined by a harmonic potential in one direction, and are free in the other direction. Ground state in strong magnetic fields is investigated through numerical diagonalization of the Hamiltonian. It is shown that the fractional quantum Hall states are realized even in the presence of the external potential under suitable conditions, and a phase diagram is obtained.
