The line modulations of H-like Fe, Ca, Ar, and S observed with $XRISM$/Resolve in Cyg X-3

Cygnus X-3, hosting a Wolf-Rayet (WR) star whose dense wind produces various spectral lines due to photoionization by X-rays from a compact object, provides an ideal laboratory for studying wind dynamics and density structure. We measured the orbital modulations of the Fe, Ca, Ar, and S Ly$α$ lines observed with the X-ray microcalorimeter (Resolve) onboard the $XRISM$, taking account of both emission and absorption lines of the Ly$α$ complexes. The modulations of Doppler shifts of the Fe, Ca, Ar, and S Ly$α$ lines showed amplitudes of 500 km s$^{-1}$ and phase offsets of 0.04, 0.09, 0.11, and 0.17, respectively, in units of an orbital period (4.8 hours) relative to the orbital motion of the compact object. This result indicated that H-like Fe most closely follows the compact object's motion. The line widths ranged from 400 to 1000 km s$^{-1}$. The intensities of both emission and absorption lines reached their minima around orbital phase 0.0 and their maxima around phase 0.5. The absorption peaks, however, did not align exactly with phase 0.5, suggesting the inhomogeneous structures such as an accretion wake and/or a bow shock. We compared the observed modulations with calculations based on a stellar wind model, accelerated by ultraviolet radiation from the WR star. One of the calculations qualitatively reproduced the observed trend that H-like Fe ions were concentrated near the compact object, whereas H-like S was distributed across the binary system, with H-like Ca and Ar showing intermediate spatial distributions. From this comparison, we estimated that a mass-loss rate of the stellar wind was approximately $5 \times 10^{-6}$-$1 \times 10^{-5}\ M_{\odot}\ {\rm yr}^{-1}$.

The 0.9 Megasecond XRISM/Resolve Spectrum of the Seyfert-1 AGN NGC 4151

NGC 4151 is the brightest Seyfert-1 active galaxy in the pass band of the Resolve calorimeter spectrometer aboard XRISM. It has been observed on 14 occasions, resulting in a total exposure of 893 ks. Herein, we report on an analysis of the time-averaged spectrum. The narrow Fe K$_α$ emission line complex requires contributions from the torus and the optical broad line region (BLR). Models assuming an emissivity index of $q=2$ for these components are statistically preferred over models assuming $q=3$ for a flat disk (where $J\propto r^{-q}$). A smooth shoulder on the red wing of these line components is likely best interpreted as Compton scattering in a medium with bound electrons, potentially signaling the presence of dust at the base of the BLR and in the torus. The data statistically prefer the addition of relativistic reflection from the innermost accretion disk, extending down to a radius of $r = 3.2^{+3.5}_{-2.0}~GM/c^{2}$ and with an inclination of $θ= 29.7^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$ degrees. The Fe K edge at 7.1 keV is best modeled with contributions from multiple charge states, consistent with obscuration due to cool, $kT \simeq 5$ eV collisional gas or photoionized gas. Dust is not evident in the Fe K absorption edge. A spectrum of outflows is clearly revealed, with slow ``warm absorber'' winds spanning Fe XX-XXVI, fast winds primarily seen via Fe XXV and Fe XXVI lines, and ultra-fast outflows (or, UFOs) seen as broad Fe~XXVI lines. The warm absorbers are almost certainly ``failed'' winds that return to the central engine; the data constrain their radius, density, filling factor, and distribution. For the most conservative volume filling factors, the UFOs may not deliver the kinetic feedback needed to halt star formation, on average. However, they may generate galaxy-altering feedback for larger filling factors and/or during certain intervals. (abridged)

One-pion exchange potential in a strong magnetic field

We derive the one-pion exchange potential (OPEP) in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field using chiral perturbation theory with nonrelativistic nucleons. Our approach is applicable not only to weak magnetic fields but also to strong ones up to around the pion-mass scale. The Green's function of charged pions is modified by the magnetic field, leading to changes in the nuclear force. By numerically evaluating the modified OPEP incorporating its spin and isospin dependencies, we show that the range of the potential decreases in both directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field as the field strength increases. We also compute the resulting energy shift of the deuteron due to the modified OPEP, which can reach the order of 1 MeV around $|eB| = m_π^2$, which is comparable to the deuteron binding energy.

Spectral and photometric variability of SS 433 observed with XRISM and simultaneous optical and near-infrared telescopes

We present results from coordinated multiwavelength observations of the SS 433, obtained with XRISM, optical telescopes, and near-infrared camera during 2024 April and 2025 March. The XRISM exposures amounted to ~200 ks in 2024 and ~100 ks in 2025. With XRISM/Resolve's high spectral resolution and large effective area, we clearly resolved numerous emission lines even in short time segments, achieving improved accuracy in Doppler-shift measurements relative to earlier observations. The simultaneously obtained X-ray and optical Doppler shifts suggest a possible tendency for the optical emission to lag slightly behind the X-rays. In the Resolve data, the Doppler shifts of the two jet components exhibited apparent asymmetries, with jet speeds fluctuating around ~0.26$\pm$0.01$c$ in 2024 and ~0.30$\pm$0.01$c$ in 2025. The velocity variations indicated modulations on a timescale of ~6.3 d, with a phase offset of about -90$^{\circ}$ relative to the nutation cycle. The observed line widths and flux of the approaching and receding jets appear consistent with the expected geometrical effects, indicating systematically larger line widths in the inner regions of the jets, as proposed by Shidatsu et al. (2025). Optical light curves show flares of ~400 s in 2024 and ~1600 s in 2025, with amplitudes up to ~15% during out-of-eclipse intervals, while the XRISM/Xtend light curves show no significant variability within the overlapping intervals and given the statistical uncertainties. Near-infrared photometry in 2024, obtained during an out-of-eclipse interval at a different epoch from the optical observations, showed no flare-like variability, and the X-ray band also remained constant within uncertainties. These coordinated observations provide a foundation for future XRISM studies aimed at probing the dynamical properties of the relativistic jets in SS 433.

Fe XVIII-XXIV K beta Inner-shell Absorption Lines in the X-ray Spectra of Neutron Star and Black Hole Binaries with XRISM

The advent of the X-ray microcalorimeter spectrometer Resolve onboard the XRISM space telescope opened a new era for high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of astrophysical plasmas. Many spectral features were newly detected, including the K alpha and K beta inner-shell transition lines of mildly ionized (F- to Li-like) Fe at 6-8 keV in the spectra of X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei. The widely used atomic databases contain information on the K alpha but not K beta lines of these ions. We conducted the atomic structure calculation using FAC to derive the Fe K alpha and K beta lines and verified the result against ground experiments and other calculations of the Fe K alpha lines. We then implemented the Fe K beta lines in a radiative transfer code (cloudy) and compared the synthesized and observed spectra with XRISM. A reasonably good agreement was obtained between the observation and the ab initio calculations. This exemplifies the need to expand the atomic databases to interpret astrophysical spectra.

XRISM spectroscopy on orbital modulation of Fe Ly$α$ lines in Cygnus X-3

To understand physical processes such as mass transfer and binary evolution in X-ray binaries, the orbital parameters of the system are fundamental and crucial information. Cygnus X-3 is a high-mass X-ray binary composed of a compact object of unknown nature and a Wolf-Rayet star, which is of great interest in the context of wind-fed mass accretion and binary evolution. Here we present XRISM/Resolve high-resolution spectroscopy focusing on the Fe Ly$α$ lines in its hypersoft state. We perform an orbital phase-resolved spectral analysis of the lines to study the orbital modulation of the emission and absorption lines. It is found that the emission lines reflect the orbital motion of the compact object whose estimated velocity amplitude is $430^{~~+150}_{~~-140}~~\mathrm{km\,s^{~-1}}$, while the absorption lines show a variation that can be interpreted as originating from the stellar wind. We discuss possible mass ranges for the binary components using the mass function with the estimated value of the velocity amplitude in this work, combined with the relation between the mass loss rate and the orbital period derivative and the empirical mass and mass loss rate relation for Galactic Wolf-Rayet stars. They are constrained to be $(1.3\text{-}5.1)\,M_\odot$ and $(9.3\text{-}12)\,M_\odot$ for the assumed inclination angle of $i = 25$ deg, which becomes more relaxed to $(1.3\text{-}24)\,M_\odot$ and $(9.3\text{-}16)\,M_\odot$ for $i = 35$ deg, respectively. Thus, it remains unclear whether the system harbors a black hole or a neutron star.

Detection of extended X-ray emission around the PeVatron microquasar V4641 Sgr with XRISM

A recent report on the detection of very-high-energy gamma rays from V4641 Sagittarii (V4641 Sgr) up to ~0.8 peta-electronvolt has made it the second confirmed "PeVatron" microquasar. Here we report on the observation of V4641 Sgr with X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) in September 2024. Thanks to the large field of view and low background, the CCD imager Xtend successfully detected for the first time X-ray extended emission around V4641 Sgr with a significance of > 4.5 sigma and > 10 sigma based on our imaging and spectral analysis, respectively. The spatial extent is estimated to have a radius of $7 \pm 3$ arcmin ($13 \pm 5$ pc at a distance of 6.2 kpc) assuming a Gaussian-like radial distribution, which suggests that the particle acceleration site is within ~10 pc of the microquasar. If the X-ray morphology traces the diffusion of accelerated electrons, this spatial extent can be explained by either an enhanced magnetic field (~80 uG) or a suppressed diffusion coefficient (~$10^{27}$ cm$^2$ s$^{-1}$ at 100 TeV). The integrated X-ray flux, (4-6)$\times 10^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ (2-10 keV), would require a magnetic field strength higher than the galactic mean (> 8 uG) if the diffuse X-ray emission originates from synchrotron radiation and the gamma-ray emission is predominantly hadronic. If the X-rays are of thermal origin, the measured extension, temperature, and plasma density can be explained by a jet with a luminosity of ~$2\times 10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$, which is comparable to the Eddington luminosity of this system.

Phase-Dependent Spectral Shape Changes in the Ultraluminous X-Ray Pulsar NGC 5907 ULX1

Discovery of coherent pulsations from several ultraluminous X-ray pulsars (ULXPs) has provided direct evidence of super-critical accretion flow. However, geometrical structure of such accretion flow onto the central neutron star remains poorly understood. NGC 5907 ULX1 is one of the most luminous ULXPs with the luminosity exceeding $10^{41}~{\rm erg~s^{-1}}$. Here we present a broadband X-ray study of this ULXP using the data from simultaneous observations with XMM-Newton and NuSTAR conducted in July 2014. The phase-resolved spectra are well reproduced by a model consisting of a multicolor disk blackbody emission with a temperature gradient of $p = 0.5~(T \propto r^{-p})$ and a power law with an exponential cutoff. The disk component is phase-invariant, and has an innermost temperature of $\sim 0.3~{\rm keV}$. Its normalization suggests a relatively low inclination angle of the disk, in contrast to the previous claim in other literature. The power law component, attributed to the emission from the accretion flow inside the magnetosphere of the neutron star, indicates phase-dependent spectral shape changes; the spectrum is slightly harder in the pre-peak phase than in the post-peak phase. This implies that the magnetosphere has an asymmetric geometry around the magnetic axis, and that hotter regions close to the magnetic pole become visible before the pulse peak.

Universal formula for the flavor non-singlet axial-vector current from the gradient flow

By employing the gradient/Wilson flow, we derive a universal formula that expresses a correctly normalized flavor non-singlet axial-vector current of quarks. The formula is universal in the sense that it holds independently of regularization and especially holds with lattice regularization. It is also confirmed that, in the lowest non-trivial order of perturbation theory, the triangle diagram containing the formula and two flavor non-singlet vector currents possesses non-local structure that is compatible with the triangle anomaly.
