Ideas and Requirements for the Global Cosmic-Ray Observatory (GCOS)

After a successful kick-off meeting in 2021. two workshops in 2022 and 2023 on the future Global Cosmic-Ray Observatory (GCOS) focused mainly on a straw man design of the detector and science possibilities for astro- and particle physics. About 100 participants gathered for in-person and hybrid panel discussions. In this report, we summarize these discussions, present a preliminary straw-man design for GCOS and collect short write-ups of the flash talks given during the focus sessions.

Testing the effectiveness of unconventional monetary policy in Japan and the United States

Unconventional monetary policy (UMP) may make the effective lower bound (ELB) on the short-term interest rate irrelevant. We develop a theoretical model that underpins our empirical test of this `irrelevance hypothesis' based on the simple idea that under the hypothesis, the short rate can be excluded in any empirical model that accounts for alternative measures of monetary policy. We test the hypothesis for Japan and the United States using a structural vector autoregressive model with the ELB. We firmly reject the hypothesis but find that UMP has had strong delayed effects.

Depth of maximum of air-shower profiles: testing the compatibility of measurements performed at the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array experiment

At the Pierre Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array, the measurements of depths of maximum of air-shower profiles, $X_\mathrm{max}$, are performed using direct observations of the longitudinal development of showers with the help of the fluorescence telescopes. Though the same detection technique is used at both installations, the straightforward comparison of the characteristics of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions is not possible due to the different approaches to the analysis of the recorded events. In this work, the Auger-Telescope Array composition working group presents a technique to compare the $X_\mathrm{max}$ measurements from the Auger Observatory and the Telescope Array. Applying this technique the compatibility of the first two moments of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions is qualitatively tested for energies $10^{18.2}~{\rm eV} < E < 10^{19.0}~{\rm eV}$ using the recently published Telescope Array data from the Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detector stations. For a quantitative comparison, simulations of air showers with EPOS-LHC, folded with effects of the Telescope Array detector, are required along with the inclusion in the analysis of the systematic uncertainties in the measurements of $X_\mathrm{max}$ and the energies of the events.

Air Shower Observation by a Simple Structured Fresnel lens Telescope with Single Pixel for the Next Generation of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray Observatory

Improved statistics and mass-composition-sensitive observation are required to clarify the origin of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). Inevitably in the future, the UHECR observatories will have to be expanded due to the small flux; however, the upgrade will be expensive with the detectors currently in use. Hence, we are developing a new fluorescence detector for UHECR observation. The proposed fluorescence detector, called cosmic ray air fluorescence Fresnel-lens telescope (CRAFFT), has an extremely simple structure and can observe the longitudinal development of an air shower. Furthermore, CRAFFT has the potential to significantly reduce costs for the realization of a huge observatory for UHECR research. We deployed four CRAFFT detectors at the Telescope Array site and conducted the test observation. We have successfully observed ten air-shower events using CRAFFT. Thus, CRAFFT can be a solution to realize the next generation of UHECR observatories.

Coherent radio emission from the electron beam sudden appearance

We report on the measurement of coherent radio emission from the electron beam sudden appearance at the Telescope Array Electron Light Source facility. This emission was detected by four independent radio detector setups sensitive to frequencies ranging from 50 MHz up to 12.5 GHz. We show that this phenomenon can be understood as a special case of coherent transition radiation by comparing the observed results with simulations. The in-nature application of this signal is given by the emission of cosmic ray or neutrino induced particle cascades traversing different media such as air, rock and ice.

Mass Composition Working Group Report at UHECR-2012

We present a summary of the measurements of mass sensitive parameters at the highest cosmic ray energies done by several experiments. The Xmax distribution as a function of energy has been measured with fluorescence telescopes by the HiRes, TA and Auger experiments and with Cherenkov light detectors by Yakutsk. The or the average mass ( ) has been also inferred using ground detectors, such as muon and water Cherenkov detectors. We discuss the different data analyses elaborated by each collaboration in order to extract the relevant information. Special attention is given to the different approaches used in the analysis of the data measured by fluorescence detectors in order to take into account detector biases. We present a careful analysis of the stability and performance of each analysis. The results of the different experiments will be compared and the discrepancies or agreements will be quantified.

The atmospheric transparency measured with a LIDAR system at the Telescope Array experiment

An atmospheric transparency was measured using a LIDAR with a pulsed UV laser (355nm) at the observation site of Telescope Array in Utah, USA. The measurement at night for two years in $2007\sim 2009$ revealed that the extinction coefficient by aerosol at the ground level is $0.033^{+0.016}_{-0.012} \rm km^{-1}$ and the vertical aerosol optical depth at 5km above the ground is $0.035^{+0.019}_{-0.013}$. A model of the altitudinal aerosol distribution was built based on these measurements for the analysis of atmospheric attenuation of the fluorescence light generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays.
