Muon lifetime and Fermi constant: an update

We present an updated prediction for the lifetime of the muon including a detailed analysis of all relevant uncertainties. Our prediction includes QED corrections up to order $α^3$ and state-of-the-art hadronic contributions based on dispersive methods. Radiative corrections and finite-electron-mass effects are parametrized by the correction factor $Δq$ in $τ_μ^{-1}=G_F^2m_μ^5(1+Δq)/(192π^3)$, for which we obtain $Δq=(-4\, 384\, 678 \pm 34)\times 10^{-9}$. This reduces the uncertainty associated with $Δq$ by an order of magnitude compared to the previous prediction at order $α^2$. We use our results to provide an updated value of the Fermi coupling constant, $G_F=1.166\,378\, 59 \, (59) \times 10^{-5} \, \mathrm{GeV}^{-2}$. Further improvements will require better measurements of the muon lifetime and mass.

Muon $g$$-$2: correlation-induced uncertainties in precision data combinations

We present a general and systematic framework to quantify uncertainties arising from imperfectly known systematic correlations in data combinations. Formulated at the level of the combined data, the method enables controlled variation of the correlation structure, leading to the construction of covariance matrices directly on the resulting combination and thus providing a robust and systematic estimate of correlation-induced uncertainties. We apply the method to $e^+e^- \to \mathrm{hadrons}$ cross section data, with the resulting covariance matrices propagated to derived observables, including dispersive determinations of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ^\mathrm{HVP}$. We find that uncertainties from systematic correlation assumptions are generally subdominant but non-negligible, and do not fully account for differences between existing $e^+e^- \to \mathrm{hadrons}$ data combinations. The framework is broadly applicable to correlated data combinations in precision measurements and constitutes a new component of the upcoming KNTW data combination for $a_μ^\mathrm{HVP}$.

Muon $g$$-$$2$: blinding for data-driven hadronic vacuum polarization

The KNT(W) data-driven determinations of the hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) are crucial inputs to previous and future Standard Model (SM) predictions of the muon's anomalous magnetic moment, $a_μ$. With the muon $g$$-$$2$'s new physics case uncertain due to disagreeing HVP evaluations, new SM predictions and experimental measurements of $a_μ$ expected soon, and a complete revamp of the KNTW analysis framework underway, this letter motivates and describes a blinding scheme for data-driven HVP determinations that has been implemented for future KNTW analyses.

The $g-2$ of charged leptons, $α(M_Z^2)$ and the hyperfine splitting of muonium

Following updates in the compilation of $e^+e^-\rightarrow{\rm hadrons}$ data, this work presents re-evaluations of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron ($a_e$), muon ($a_μ$) and tau lepton ($a_τ$), to the ground-state hyperfine splitting of muonium and also updates the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling at the mass scale of the $Z$ boson, $α(M_Z^2)$. Combining the results for the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions with recent updates for the hadronic light-by-light corrections, the electromagnetic and the weak contributions, the deviation between the measured value of $a_μ$ and its Standard Model prediction amounts to $Δa_μ = (28.02 \pm 7.37) \times 10^{-10}$, corresponding to a muon $g-2$ discrepancy of $3.8σ$.

Hunting for T-violation and Majoranality of Neutrinos in Muon Decays

We propose a new experiment to search for a time-reversal (T) symmetry breaking process in muon decay and the Majoranality of the neutrinos. In the presence of V+A interactions, the Majoranality appears as a T-violating term in the muon decay width as shown by Doi et al, while in the Standard Model such a T-violating term is negligibly small. The presences of V+A interactions and the corresponding heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos give us an important clue to solve two major issues in particle physics, the deficit of baryon asymmetry in the universe and the Majoranality of neutrinos. In the experiment, the polarization of positrons from muon decays is measured using a polarimeter consisting of a magnetized foil and a segmented calorimeter. According to our result of numerical calculation, a factor of ten improvement in sensitivity to the T-violating process is expected by a year of measurement at J-PARC Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility, compared to the most recent precursor experiment.

The strong coupling from $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons

We use a new compilation of the hadronic $R$-ratio from available data for the process $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons below the charm mass to determine the strong coupling $α_s$, using finite-energy sum rules. Quoting our results at the $τ$ mass to facilitate comparison to the results obtained from similar analyses of hadronic $τ$-decay data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.298\pm 0.016\pm 0.006$ in fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.304\pm 0.018\pm 0.006$ in contour-improved perturbation theory, where the first error is statistical, and the second error combines various systematic effects. These values are in good agreement with a recent determination from the OPAL and ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays. We briefly compare the $R(s)$-based analysis with the $τ$-based analysis.

The muon $g-2$ and $α(M_Z^2)$: a new data-based analysis

This work presents a complete re-evaluation of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm had, \, VP}$ and the hadronic contributions to the effective QED coupling at the mass of the $Z$ boson, $Δα_{\rm had}(M_Z^2)$, from the combination of $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ cross section data. Focus has been placed on the development of a new data combination method, which fully incorporates all correlated statistical and systematic uncertainties in a bias free approach. All available $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ cross section data have been analysed and included, where the new data compilation has yielded the full hadronic $R$-ratio and its covariance matrix in the energy range $m_π\leq\sqrt{s}\leq 11.2$ GeV. Using these combined data and pQCD above that range results in estimates of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to $g-2$ of the muon of $a_μ^{\rm had, \, LO \, VP} = (693.27 \pm 2.46)\times 10^{-10}$ and $a_μ^{\rm had, \, NLO \, VP} = (-9.82 \pm 0.04)\times 10^{-10}$. The new estimate for the Standard Model prediction is found to be $a_μ^{\rm SM} = (11\ 659 \ 182.05 \pm 3.56) \times 10^{-10}$, which is $3.7σ$ below the current experimental measurement. The prediction for the five-flavour hadronic contribution to the QED coupling at the $Z$ boson mass is $Δα_{\rm had}^{(5)}(M_Z^2)= (276.11 \pm 1.11)\times 10^{-4}$, resulting in $α^{-1}(M_Z^2) = 128.946 \pm 0.015$. Detailed comparisons with results from similar related works are given.

The strong coupling from $e^+e^-\to$ hadrons below charm

We use a new compilation of the hadronic $R$-ratio from available data for the process $e^+e^-\to\mbox{hadrons}$ to determine the strong coupling, $α_s$. We make use of all data for the $R$-ratio from threshold to a center-of-mass energy of 2 GeV by employing finite-energy sum rules. Data above 2 GeV, for which at present far fewer high-precision experimental data are available, do not provide much additional constraint but are fully consistent with the values for $α_s$ we obtain. Quoting our results at the $τ$ mass to facilitate comparison to the results obtained from analogous analyses of hadronic $τ$-decay data, we find $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.298\pm 0.016\pm 0.006$ in fixed-order perturbation theory, and $α_s(m_τ^2)=0.304\pm 0.018\pm 0.006$ in contour-improved perturbation theory, where the first error is statistical, and the second error reflects our estimate of various systematic effects. These values are in good agreement with a recent determination from the OPAL and ALEPH data for hadronic $τ$ decays.

The hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the muon $g-2$

The hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\rm had, VP}$ have been re-evaluated from the combination of $e^+e^-\rightarrow {\rm hadrons}$ cross section data. Focus has been placed on the development of a new data combination method, which fully incorporates all correlated statistical and systematic uncertainties in a bias free approach. Using these combined data have resulted in estimates of the hadronic vacuum polarisation contributions to $g-2$ of the muon of $a_μ^{\rm had, \, LO \, VP} = (693.27 \pm 2.46)\times 10^{-10}$ and $a_μ^{\rm had, \, NLO \, VP} = (-9.82 \pm 0.04)\times 10^{-10}$. The new estimate for the Standard Model prediction is found to be $a_μ^{\rm SM} = (11\ 659 \ 182.05 \pm 3.56) \times 10^{-10}$, which is $3.7σ$ below the current experimental measurement. In addition, the prediction for the hadronic contribution to the QED coupling at the $Z$ boson mass has been calculated to be $Δα_{\rm had}^{(5)}(M_Z^2)= (276.11 \pm 1.11)\times 10^{-4}$, resulting in $α^{-1}(M_Z^2) = 128.946 \pm 0.015$.

Anapole moment of a chiral molecule revisited

Parity violation in a chiral, four-atom molecule is discussed. Given the geometrical positions of the four atoms, we calculate the anapole moment of it. This problem was first discussed by Khriplovich and Pospelov. We give a detailed derivation for it so that it can be more accessible to wider range of scientists. We correct errors in their results and generalize their initial state to |s_{1/2}\rangle and |p_{1/2}\rangle states. We also discuss realistic candidates of the chiral molecules to which this approach can be applied.

Charged Lepton Flavor Violation in the Semi-Constrained NMSSM with Right-Handed Neutrinos

We study the μ\to e γdecay in the Z_3-invariant next-to-minimal supersymmetric (SUSY) Standard Model (NMSSM) with superheavy right-handed neutrinos. We assume that the soft SUSY breaking parameters are generated at the GUT scale, not universally as in the minimal supergravity scenario but in such a way that those soft parameters which are specific to the NMSSM can differ from the soft parameters which involve only the MSSM fields while keeping the universality at the GUT scale within the soft parameters for the MSSM and right-handed neutrino fields. We call this type of boundary conditions "semi-constrained". In this model, the lepton-flavor-violating off-diagonal elements of the slepton mass matrix are induced by radiative corrections from the neutrino Yukawa couplings, just like as in the MSSM extended with the right-handed neutrinos, and these off-diagonal elements induce sizable rates of μ\to e γdepending on the parameter space. Since this model has more free parameters than the MSSM, the parameter region favored from the Higgs boson mass can slightly differ from that in the MSSM. We show that there is a parameter region in which the μ\to e γdecay can be observable in the near future even if the SUSY mass scale is about 4 TeV.

Constraints on radion in a warped extra dimension model from Higgs boson searches at the LHC

We study constraints on the radion mass and couplings in the Randall-Sundrum model from the recent LHC data on the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson searches. When the radion is heavy enough so that it can decay into a pair of on-shell Z-bosons, we find that the ZZ channel gives a stringent constraint. For example, if the radion mass m_ϕis 200 GeV, the scale Λ_ϕwhich characterizes the interactions of the radion with the SM fields must be larger than 5 TeV. Even for m_ϕ=1 TeV, we find that the lower bound on Λ_ϕis 2 TeV.

Hadronic contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron and the hyperfine splitting of muonium

Motivated by recent progress of theory and experiment on the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron, a_e, we update the hadronic contributions to a_e. Using our up-to-date compilation of e^+ e^- \to hadrons data, we find the leading order hadronic contribution a_e^{had,LO,VP} = (1.866 \pm 0.010_{exp} \pm 0.005_{rad}) \cdot 10^{-12} and the next-to-leading order hadronic contribution a_e^{had,NLO,VP} = (- 0.2234 \pm 0.0012_{exp} \pm 0.0007_{rad}) \cdot 10^{-12}, where the first and second errors are from the error of the experimental data and the uncertainty in the treatment of radiative corrections, respectively. These values are compatible with earlier evaluations by other groups, but have significantly improved uncertainties due to the more precise input data used. We also update the leading order hadronic contribution to the ground state hyperfine splitting of muonium, obtaining Δν_{Mu}^{had,VP} = (232.68 \pm 1.25_{exp} \pm 0.72_{rad}) Hz. This value is consistent with the most precise evaluation in the literature and reduces its error by a factor of two.

The MSSM confronts the precision electroweak data and the muon g-2

We update the electroweak study of the predictions of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) including the recent results on the muon anomalous magnetic moment, the weak boson masses, and the final precision data on the Z boson parameters from LEP and SLC. We find that the region of the parameter space where the slepton masses are a few hundred GeV is favored from the muon g-2 for \tanβ\ltsim 10, whereas for \tanβ\simeq 50 heavier slepton mass up to \sim 1000 GeV can account for the reported 3.2 σdifference between its experimental value and the Standard Model (SM) prediction. As for the electroweak measurements, the SM gives a good description, and the sfermions lighter than 200 GeV tend to make the fit worse. We find, however, that sleptons as light as 100 to 200 GeV are favored also from the electroweak data, if we leave out the jet asymmetry data that do not agree with the leptonic asymmetry data. We extend the survey of the preferred MSSM parameters by including the constraints from the b \to s γtransition, and find favorable scenarios in the minimal supergravity, gauge-, and mirage-mediation models of supersymmetry breaking.

(g-2)_mu and alpha(M_Z^2) re-evaluated using new precise data

We update our Standard Model predictions for g-2 of the muon and for the hadronic contributions to the running of the QED coupling, Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2). Particular emphasis is put on recent changes in the hadronic contributions from new data in the 2pi channel and from the energy region just below 2 GeV. In particular, for the e+e- -> pi+pi- contribution we include the recent `radiative return' data from KLOE and BaBar. We also include the recent BaBar data on other exclusive channels. We make a detailed study of the effect of replacing the measurements of the inclusive cross section, sigma(e+e- -> hadrons), by the sum of the exclusive channels in the energy interval 1.43 < sqrt{s} < 2 GeV, which includes a QCD sum-rule analysis of this energy region. Our favoured prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment is (g-2)/2 = (11659182.8 +- 4.9)*10^(-10) which is 3.3 sigma below the present world-average measurement. We compare our g-2 value with other recent calculations. Our prediction for the QED coupling, obtained via Delta alpha_had^(5)(M_Z^2) = (276.26 +- 1.38)*10^(-4), is alpha(M_Z^2)^(-1) = 128.944 +- 0.019.

Effects of Top-quark Compositeness on Higgs Boson Production at the LHC

Motivated by the possibility that the right-handed top-quark (t_R) is composite, we discuss the effects of dimension-six operators on the Higgs boson production at the LHC. When t_R is the only composite particle among the Standard Model (SM) particles, the (V+A)\otimes (V+A) type four-top-quark contact interaction is expected to have the largest coefficient among the dimension-six operators, according to the Naive Dimensional Analysis (NDA). We find that, to lowest order in QCD and other SM interactions, the cross section of the SM Higgs boson production via gluon fusion does not receive corrections from one insertion of the new contact interaction vertex. We also discuss the effects of other dimension-six operators whose coefficients are expected to be the second and the third largest from NDA. We find that the operator which consists of two t_R's and two SM Higgs boson doublets can recognizably change the Higgs boson production cross section from the SM prediction if the cut-off scale is \sim 1TeV.

New physics effect on the top-Yukawa coupling at ILC

Measurement of the top-Yukawa coupling is important to understand the fermion mass generation mechanism and dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking. We discuss the top quark anomalous couplings which can be described by higher dimensional operators. We investigate the process $e^-e^+ \to W^-W^+ν\barν\to t \bar t ν\barν$ to study the contribution of the anomalous top-Higgs coupling to the cross section. The effect of the dimension-six top-Higgs interaction on the cross section can be a few hundred percent greater than the SM prediction. Such a large effect can be measured at the International Linear Collider.
