Cubic-quintic nonlinearity in superfluid Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices: Heavy solitary waves, barrier-induced criticality, and current-phase relations

We study superfluid (SF) states of strongly interacting Bose-Bose mixtures with equal mass and intra-component interaction in optical lattices both in the presence and absence of a barrier potential (BP). We show that the SF order parameters obey the two-component nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) with not only cubic but also quintic nonlinearity in the vicinity of the first-order transitions to the Mott insulators with even fillings. In the case of no BP, we analyze solitary-wave (SW) solutions of the cubic-quintic NLSE. When the SF state changes from a ground state to a metastable one, a standard dark SW turns into a bubble-like dark SW, which has a non-vanishing density dip and no pi phase kink even in the case of a standing SW. It is shown that the former and latter SW are dynamically unstable against an out-of-phase fluctuation and an in-phase fluctuation, respectively, and the dynamical instabilities are weakened when one approaches the transition point. We find that the size and the inertial mass of the SW diverge at the first-order transition point. We suggest that the divergence of the inertial mass may be detected through measurement of the relation between the velocity and the phase jump of the SW. In the presence of BP, we reveal that when the barrier strength exceeds a certain critical value, the SF state that was metastable without the barrier is destabilized towards complete disjunction of the SF. The presence of the critical BP strength indicates that the strong BP qualitatively changes the criticality near the metastability limit of the SF state. We derive critical behaviors of the density, the compressibility, and the critical current near the metastability limit induced by the BP. It is also found that the relation between the supercurrent and the phase jump across the BP exhibits a peculiar behavior, owing to the non-topological nature of the bubble-like SW.

Quantum Phase Diagram of the Triangular-Lattice XXZ Model in a Magnetic Field

The triangular lattice of S=1/2 spins with XXZ anisotropy is a ubiquitous model for various frustrated systems in different contexts. We determine the quantum phase diagram of the model in the plane of the anisotropy parameter and the magnetic field by means of a large-size cluster mean-field method with a scaling scheme. We find that quantum fluctuations break up the nontrivial continuous degeneracy into two first-order phase transitions. In between the two transition boundaries, the degeneracy lifting results in the emergence of a new coplanar phase not predicted in the classical counterpart of the model. We suggest that the quantum phase transition to the nonclassical coplanar state can be observed in triangular-lattice antiferromagnets with large easy-plane anisotropy or in the corresponding optical-lattice systems.

Collective excitation and stability of flow-induced gapless Fermi superfluids

We study the collective excitation and stability of superfluid Fermi gases flowing with a constant velocity in three-dimensional free space. In particular, we investigate a possible gapless superfluid state induced by the superflow using the mean-field theory and the generalized random-phase approximation (GRPA). For weak attractive interactions, we find that the mean-field superfluid order parameter can take a nonzero value even after the superflow velocity exceeds the threshold for the onset of Bogoliubov quasiparticle excitations. Since the Cooper pairs are only partially broken by the quasiparticle excitations, a gapless superfluid state can be formed over a certain range of superflow velocity above the pair-breaking onset. In addition to the usual quasiparticle-pair continuum and the Anderson-Bogoliubov collective mode, the GRPA excitation spectrum of the gapless superfluid state has a quasiparticle-quasihole continuum and a second collective mode. We find that the long-wavelength excitations of the second collective mode eventually cause dynamical instability of the system when the superflow velocity increases. However, the gapless superfluid state still remains stable in a narrow but finite range of superflow velocity.

Quantum tricriticality at the superfluid-insulator transition of binary Bose mixtures

Quantum criticality near a tricritical point (TCP) is studied in the two-component Bose-Hubbard model on square lattices. The existence of quantum TCP on a boundary of superfluid-insulator transition is confirmed by quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Moreover, we analytically derive the quantum tricritical behaviors on the basis of an effective field theory. We find two significant features of the quantum tricriticality, that are the chemical potential dependence of the superfluid transition temperature and a strong density fluctuation. We suggest that these features are directly observable in existing experimental setups of Bose-Bose mixtures in optical lattices.

First-order phase transition and anomalous hysteresis of Bose gases in optical lattices

We study the first-order quantum phase transitions of Bose gases in optical lattices. A special emphasis is placed on an anomalous hysteresis behavior, in which the phase transition occurs in a unidirectional way and a hysteresis loop does not form. We first revisit the hardcore Bose-Hubbard model with dipole-dipole interactions on a triangular lattice to analyze accurately the ground-state phase diagram and the hysteresis using the cluster mean-field theory combined with cluster-size scaling. Details of the anomalous hysteresis are presented. We next consider the two-component and spin-1 Bose-Hubbard models on a hypercubic lattice and show that the anomalous hysteresis can emerge in these systems as well. In particular, for the former model, we discuss the experimental feasibility of the first-order transitions and the associated hysteresis. We also explain an underlying mechanism of the anomalous hysteresis by means of the Ginzburg-Landau theory. From the given cases, we conclude that the anomalous hysteresis is a ubiquitous phenomenon of systems with a phase region of lobe shape that is surrounded by the first-order boundary.

Magnon Supersolid and Anomalous Hysteresis in Spin Dimers on a Triangular Lattice

We study the magnetic phase diagram and hysteresis behavior of weakly coupled spin dimers on a triangular lattice using the cluster mean-field method with cluster-size scaling. We find that the magnetization curve has plateaus at 1/3 and 2/3 of the total magnetization, in which local singlet and triplet states form a superlattice pattern. Moreover, if increasing (decreasing) the magnetic field from the 1/3 (2/3) plateau, the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplons occurs on the superlattice background, leading to the transition into magnon supersolid phase. We also find that the first-order transition between these solid states and the standard magnon BEC state exhibits an anomalous hysteresis upon cycling the magnetic field; the transition can occur only from solid to BEC, and the system cannot return to the initial solid state in the reverse process.

Flow-Induced Charge Modulation in Superfluid Atomic Fermions Loaded into an Optical Kagome Lattice

We study the superfluid state of atomic fermions in a tunable optical kagome lattice motivated by recent experiments. We show that imposed superflow induces spatial modulations in the density and order parameter of the pair condensate and leads to a charge modulated superfluid state analogous to a supersolid state. The spatial modulations in the superfluid emerge due to the geometric effect of the kagome lattice that introduces anisotropy in hopping amplitudes of fermion pairs in the presence of superflow. We also study superflow instabilities and find that the critical current limited by the dynamical instability is quite enhanced due to the large density of states associated with the flatband. The charge modulated superfluid state can sustain high temperatures close to the transition temperature that is also enhanced due to the flatband, and is therefore realizable in experiments.

Formation of Cooper pairs between conduction and localized electrons in heavy-fermion superconductors

Cooper pairing between a conduction electron ($c$ electron) and an $f$ electron, referred to as the "$c$-$f$ pairing," is examined to explain s-wave superconductivity in heavy-fermion systems. We first apply the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation to the periodic Anderson model assuming deep $f$ level and strong Coulomb repulsion. The resulting effective Hamiltonian contains direct and spin-exchange interactions between $c$ and $f$ electrons, which are responsible for the formation of the $c$-$f$ Cooper pairs. The mean-field analysis shows that the fully gapped $c$-$f$ pairing phase with anisotropic s-wave symmetry appears in a large region of the phase diagram. We also find two different types of exotic $c$-$f$ pairing phases, the Fulde-Ferrell and breached pairing phases. The formation of the $c$-$f$ Cooper pairs is attributed to the fact that the strong Coulomb repulsion makes a quasiparticle $f$ band near the center of the conduction band.

Quantum phases of hardcore bosons with long-range interactions on a square lattice

We study the ground-state phase diagrams of hardcore bosons with long-range interactions on a square lattice using the linear spin-wave theory and a cluster mean-field method. Specifically, we consider the two types of long-range interaction: One consists only of the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and the other is the dipole-dipole interaction that decays with the interparticle distance $r$ as $\sim r^{-3}$. It is known from previous analyses by quantum Monte Carlo methods that a checkerboard supersolid (CSS) is absent in the ground-state phase diagram of the former case while it is present in the latter. In the former, we find that quantum fluctuations around mean-field solutions are enhanced by the direct competition between the checkerboard and striped solid orders and that they destabilize the CSS phase. On the other hand, the emergence of the CSS phase in the latter case can be attributed to the absence of such a competition with other solid orders. We also show that the cluster mean-field method allows for the determination of phase boundaries in a precise quantitative manner when scaling with respect to the cluster size is taken into account. It is found that the phase transition between the superfluid and the solid (or CSS) is of the first order in the vicinity of the particle-hole symmetric line.

Dipolar Bosons in Triangular Optical Lattices: Quantum Phase Transitions and Anomalous Hysteresis

We study phase transitions and hysteresis in a system of dipolar bosons loaded into triangular optical lattices at zero temperature. We find that the quantum melting transition from supersolid to superfluid phase is first-order, in contrast with the previous report. We also find that due to strong quantum fluctuations the supersolid (or solid)-superfluid transition can exhibit an anomalous hysteretic behavior, in which the curve of density versus chemical potential does not form a standard loop structure. Furthermore, we show that the transition occurs unidirectionally along the anomalous hysteresis curve.

Critical velocity of flowing supersolids of dipolar Bose gases in optical lattices

We study superfluidity of supersolid phases of dipolar Bose gases in two-dimensional optical lattices. We perform linear stability analyses for the corresponding dipolar Bose-Hubbard model in the hardcore boson limit to show that a supersolid can have stable superflow until the flow velocity reaches a certain critical value. The critical velocity for the supersolid is found to be significantly smaller than that for a conventional superfluid phase. We propose that the critical velocity can be used as a signature to identify the superfluidity of the supersolid phase in experiment.

Instability of superfluid Fermi gases induced by a roton-like density mode in optical lattices

We study the stability of superfluid Fermi gases in deep optical lattices in the BCS--Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) crossover at zero temperature. Within the tight-binding attractive Hubbard model, we calculate the spectrum of the low-energy Anderson-Bogoliubov (AB) mode as well as the single-particle excitations in the presence of superfluid flow in order to determine the critical velocities. To obtain the spectrum of the AB mode, we calculate the density response function in the generalized random-phase approximation applying the Green's function formalism developed by Côté and Griffin to the Hubbard model. We find that the spectrum of the AB mode is separated from the particle-hole continuum having the characteristic rotonlike minimum at short wavelength due to the strong charge-density-wave fluctuations. The energy of the rotonlike minimum decreases with increasing the lattice velocity and it reaches zero at the critical velocity which is smaller than the pair breaking velocity. This indicates that the superfluid state is energetically unstable due to the spontaneous emission of the short-wavelength rotonlike excitations of the AB mode instead due to pair-breaking. We determine the critical velocities as functions of the interaction strength across the BCS-BEC crossover regime.

Correlated cluster mean-field theory for spin systems

A cluster mean-field method is introduced and the applications to the Ising and Heisenberg models are demonstrated. We divide the lattice sites into clusters whose size and shape are selected so that the equivalence of all sites in a cluster is preserved. Since the strength of interactions of a cluster with its surrounding clusters is strongly dependent on the spin configuration of the central cluster itself, we include this contribution in the effective fields acting on the spins. The effects of "correlations" between clusters can be taken into account beyond the standard mean-field level, and as a result our cluster-based method gives qualitatively (and even quantitatively) correct results for the both Ising and Heisenberg models. Especially, for the Ising model on the honeycomb and square lattices, the calculated results of the critical temperature are very close (overestimated by only less than 5 %) to the exact values.

Stability of superfluid Fermi gases in optical lattices

Critical velocities of superfluid Fermi gases in optical lattices are theoretically investigated across the BCS-BEC crossover. We calculate the excitation spectra in the presence of a superfluid flow in one- and two-dimensional optical lattices. It is found that the spectrum of low-lying Anderson-Bogoliubov (AB) mode exhibits a roton-like structure in the short-wavelength region due to the strong charge density wave fluctuations, and with increasing the superfluid velocity one of the roton-like minima reaches zero before the single-particle spectrum does. This means that superfluid Fermi gases in optical lattices are destabilized due to spontaneous emission of the roton-like AB mode instead of due to Cooper pair breaking.

Green's function theory for spin-1/2 ferromagnets with an easy-plane exchange anisotropy

The many-body Green's function theory with the random-phase approximation is applied to the study of easy-plane spin-1/2 ferromagnets in an in-plane magnetic field. We demonstrate that the usual procedure, in which only the three Green's functions $<< S_i^μ;S_j^->>$ ($μ=+,-,z$) are used, yields unreasonable results in this case. Then the problem is discussed in more detail by considering all combinations of Green's functions. We can derive one more equation, which cannot be obtained by using only the set of the above three Green's functions, and point out that the two equations contradict each other if one demands that the identities of the spin operators are exactly satisfied. We discuss the cause of the contradiction and attempt to improve the method in a self consistent way. In our procedure, the effect of the anisotropy can be appropriately taken into account, and the results are in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo calculations.

Band-Selective Filter in a Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbon

Electric transport of a zigzag graphene nanoribbon through a step-like potential or a barrier potential is investigated by using the recursive Green's function method. In the case of the step-like potential, we demonstrate numerically that scattering processes obey a selection rule for the band indices when the number of zigzag chains is even; the electrons belonging to the ``even'' (``odd'') bands are scattered only into the even (odd) bands so that the parity of wavefunctions is preserved. The so-called valley-valve effect can be explained by this selection rule. In the case of the barrier potential, by tuning the barrier height to be an appropriate value, we show that it can work as the ``band-selective filter'', which transmits electrons selectively with respect to the indices of the bands to which the incident electrons belong. Finally, we suggest that this selection rule can be observed in the conductance by applying two barrier potentials.

Antiferromagnetism in two-dimensional t-J model: pseudospin representation

We discuss a pseudospin representation of the two-dimensional t-J model. We introduce pseudospins associated with empty sites, deriving a new representation of the t-J model that consists of local spins and spinless fermions. We show, within a mean-field approximation, that our representation of t-J model corresponds to the {\it isotropic} antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model in an effective magnetic field. The strength and the direction of the effective field are determined by the hole doping $δ$ and the orientation of pseudospins associated with empty sites, respectively. We find that the staggered magnetization in the standard representation corresponds to the component of magnetization perpendicular to the effective field in our pseudospin representation. Using a many-body Green's function method, we show that the staggered magnetization decreases with increasing hole doping $δ$ and disappears at ${δ\approx 0.06-0.15}$ for $t/J=2-5$. Our results are in good agreement with experiments and numerical calculations in contradistinction to usual mean-field methods.
