Amalgam approach to compactness in (quasi-)Banach function spaces

We present amalgam-type characterisations of compactness in quasi-Banach function spaces. We further treat, in the same spirit, several related topics, namely convergence, (uniform) absolute continuity of the norm, and almost-compact embeddings. We also treat the case of rearrangement-invariant spaces and show that most of our conditions can be formulated in terms of the non-increasing rearrangement and the representation space.

Singular semilinear elliptic equations in nondivergence form

We study the singular semilinear equation $-Pu = \frac{f}{u^γ}$ on a bounded domain $Ω$ with Dirichlet condition $u \equiv 0$ on $\partial Ω$ , where $P$ is a second-order elliptic differential operator in nondivergence form. We obtain the existence of a solution under the assumptions that $Ω\in C^{1,1}$ and $P$ has $C^1$ coefficients, as well as the uniqueness of solutions in $L^1(Ω)$, under the assumptions that $Ω\in C^2$ and $P$ has $C^2$ coefficients. Our proofs are based on a novel combination of tools, such as recently obtained nonlinear variants of Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequalities, estimates of Green functions, and new variants of Kato-type inequalities.

On the sums of rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function spaces and their relationship to amalgams

In this paper we consider the properties of sums of rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function spaces, with the focus being on rearrangement-invariance and the Fatou property. In our first main result, we show that the quasinorm of the sum is in many cases equivalent to a rearrangement-invariant quasinorm by providing a weaker version of the Luxemburg-type representation. In our second main result, we show that the sum can be in some cases characterised as a Wiener--Luxemburg amalgam of the two constituent spaces, thus providing a sufficient condition for the sum being a rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function space.

Mean and pointwise ergodicity for composition operators on rearrangement-invariant spaces

We study ergodicity of composition operators on rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. More precisely, we give a natural and easy-to-check condition on the symbol of the operator which entails mean ergodicity on a very large class of rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. Further, we present some natural additional assumptions that allow us to obtain pointwise ergodicity. The class of spaces covered by our results contains many non-reflexive spaces, such as the Lorentz spaces $L^{p, 1}$ and $L^{p,\infty}$, $p \in (1, \infty)$, Orlicz spaces $L \log^α L$ and $\exp L^α$, $α> 0$, and the spaces $L^1$ and $L^{\infty}$ over measure spaces of finite measure. The main novelty in our approach is the application of a new locally convex topology which we introduce and which lies strictly between the norm topology and the weak topology induced by the associate space. Throughout, we give several examples which illustrate the applicability of our results as well as highlight the necessity and optimality of our assumptions.

Wiener-Luxemburg amalgam spaces

In this paper we introduce the concept of Wiener-Luxemburg amalgam spaces which are a modification of the more classical Wiener amalgam spaces intended to address some of the shortcomings the latter face in the context of rearrangement-invariant Banach function spaces. We introduce the Wiener-Luxemburg amalgam spaces and study their properties, including (but nor limited to) their normability, embeddings between them and their associate spaces. We also study amalgams of quasi-Banach function spaces and introduce a necessary generalisation of the concept of associate spaces. We then apply this general theory to resolve the question whether the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya principle holds for all r.i. quasi-Banach function spaces. Finally, we illustrate the asserted shortcomings of Wiener amalgam spaces by providing counterexamples to certain properties of Banach function spaces as well as rearrangement invariance.

Non-linear Gagliardo--Nirenberg inequality involving a second-order elliptic operator in non-divergent form

We obtain the inequalities of the form $$\int_Ω|\nabla u(x)|^2h(u(x))\,{\rm d} x\leq C\int_Ω \left( \sqrt{ |P u(x)||{\cal T}_{H}(u(x))|}\right)^{2}h(u(x))\,{\rm d} x +Θ,$$ where $Ω\subset \mathbf{R}^n$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain, $u\in W^{2,1}_{\rm loc}(Ω)$ is non-negative, $P$ is a uniformly elliptic operator in non-divergent form, ${\cal T}_{H}(\cdot )$ is certain transformation of the monotone $C^1$ function $H(\cdot)$, which is the primitive of the weight $h(\cdot)$, and $Θ$ is the boundary term which depends on boundary values of $u$ and $\nabla u$, which hold under some additional assumptions. Our results are linked to some results from probability and potential theories, e.g.~to some variants of the Douglas formulae.

Absolute continuity of the (quasi)norm in rearrangement-invariant spaces

This paper explores the interactions of absolute continuity of the (quasi)norm with the concepts that are fundamental in the theory of rearrangement-invariant (quasi-)Banach function spaces, such as the Luxemburg representation or the Hardy--Littlewood--P{\' o}lya relation. In order to prove our main results, we give an explicit construction of a particularly suitable representation quasinorm (which is not necessarily unique) and develop several new tools that we believe to be of independent interest. As an application of our results, we characterise the subspace of functions having absolutely continuous quasinorms in weak Marcinkiewicz spaces.

On the properties of rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function spaces

This paper explores some important aspects of the theory of rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function spaces. We focus on two main topics. Firstly, we prove an analogue of the Luxemburg representation theorem for rearrangement-invariant quasi-Banach function spaces over resonant measure spaces. Secondly, we develop the theory of fundamental functions and endpoint spaces.

On the properties of quasi-Banach function spaces

In this paper we explore some basic properties of quasi-Banach function spaces which are important in applications. Namely, we show that they posses a generalised version of Riesz--Fischer property, that embeddings between them are always continuous and that the dilation operator is bounded on them. We also provide a characterisation of separability for quasi-Banach function spaces over the Euclidean space. Furthermore, we extend the classical Riesz--Fischer theorem to the context of quasinormed spaces and, as a consequence, obtain an alternative proof of completeness of quasi-Banach function spaces.

On the smoothness of slowly varying functions

In this paper we consider the question of smoothness of slowly varying functions satisfying the modern definition that, in the last two decades, gained prevalence in the applications concerning function spaces and interpolation. We show, that every slowly varying function of this type is equivalent to a slowly varying function that has continuous classical derivatives of all orders.

Lorentz--Karamata spaces

In this paper, we consider Lorentz--Karamata spaces with slowly varying functions and provide a comprehensive study of their properties. We consider Lorentz--Karamata functionals over an arbitrary sigma-finite measure space equipped with a non-atomic measure and the corresponding Lorentz--Karamata spaces. We characterise non-triviality of said spaces, then study when they are equivalent to a Banach function space and obtain a complete characterisation. We compute the fundamental function of said spaces and describe the corresponding endpoint spaces. We further provide a complete characterisation of when the Lorentz--Karamata spaces defined using non-increasing rearrangement are equivalent to those defined using maximal function. We provide a complete description of the associate spaces of Lorentz--Karamata spaces. We also treat other topics like embeddings, absolute continuity of the (quasi)norm, and Boyd indices.

Reduction principle for a certain class of kernel-type operators

The classical Hardy--Littlewood inequality asserts that the integral of a product of two functions is always majorized by that of their non-increasing rearrangements. One of the pivotal applications of this result is the fact that the boundedness of an integral operator which integrates over some right neighbourhood of zero is equivalent to the boundedness of the same operator on the cone of positive non-increasing functions. It is well known that an analogous inequality for integration away from zero is not true. However, as we show in this paper, the equivalence of the restricted inequality for the non-restricted one is still true for certain class of kernel-type operators, regardless of the measure of the integration domain.
