The Solar Core and Solar Neutrinos

The long-standing deficit of measured versus predicted solar neutrino fluxes is re-examined in light of possible astrophysical solutions. In the last decade, solar neutrino flux and helioseismic measurements have greatly strengthened the case for non-astrophysical solutions. But some model- independent tests remain open.

Cosmic Ray Antiprotons

Cosmic ray antiprotons have been detected for over 20 years and are now measured reliably. Standard particle and astrophysics predict a conventional spectrum and abundance of secondary antiprotons consistent with all current measurements. These measurements place limits on exotic Galactic antiproton sources and non-standard antiproton properties. Complications arise, particularly at low energies, with heliospheric modulation of cosmic ray fluxes and production of standard secondaries from A > 1 nuclear targets. Future experiments and theoretical developments are discussed.

The Cosmic Ray Antiproton Spectrum and a Limit on the Antiproton Lifetime

Measurements of the cosmic ray pbar/p ratio are compared to predictions from an inhomogeneous leaky box model of Galactic secondary pbar production combined with an updated heliospheric model that modulates the predicted fluxes measured at the Earth. The heliospheric corrections are crucial for understanding the low-energy part of the spectrum. The pbar production- propagation-modulation model agrees with observations. Adding a finite pbar lifetime to the model, we obtain the limit tau(pbar) > 1.7 Myr (90% C.L.). Restrictions on heliospheric properties and the cutoff of low-energy interstellar cosmic rays are discussed.

The Thermodynamics and Economics of Waste

Natural resource use and waste production, disposal, and reuse in human economies are treated in their economic, technological and thermodynamic aspects. The physical nature of economic production, consumption, saving, and waste is compared and contrasted with non-human ecologies in terms of entropy production and evolutionary complexity.

Spontaneously Broken Technicolor and the Dynamics of Virtual Vector Technimesons

We propose spontaneously breaking technicolor, thus liberating techniquarks and suppressing large resonance contributions to the electroweak $S$ parameter. The dynamics is modeled by a fermion bubble approximation to a single massive techni--gluon exchange potential. This contains a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with additional interactions. ``Virtual'' vector mesons occur and contribute to $S$, and their effects are studied. Models of broken technicolor are discussed.
