Thermal Noise and Stochastic Strings in AdS/CFT

We clarify the structure of thermal noise in AdS/CFT by studying the dynamics of an equilibrated heavy quark string. Using the Kruskal extension of the correspondence to generate the dynamics of the field theory on the Keldysh contour, we show that the motion of the string is described by the classical equations of motion with a stochastic boundary condition on the stretched horizon. The form of the stochastic boundary condition is consistent with the dissipation on this surface and is found by integrating out the fluctuations inside of the stretched horizon. Solving the equations of motion for the fluctuating string we determine the full frequency dependence of the random force on the boundary quark and show that it is consistent with the frequency dependent dissipation. We show further that the stochastic motion reproduces the bulk to bulk two point functions of the Kruskal formalism. These turn out to be related to the usual retarded bulk to bulk propagator by KMS relations. Finally we analyze the stochastic equations and give a bulk picture of the random boundary force as a flip-flopping trailing string solution. The basic formalism can be applied to the fluctuations of gravitons, dilatons, and other fields.

Magnetized baryonic matter in holographic QCD

We investigate the properties of the Sakai-Sugimoto model at finite magnetic field and baryon chemical potentials. We show that in a finite magnetic field, there exists a spatially homogeneous configuration carrying finite baryon number density. At low magnetic field and baryon chemical potential the equation of state of the matter coincides with that obtained from the chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian with an anomalous term. We discuss the behavior of the system at larger magnetic fields.

Coulomb impurity in graphene

We consider the problem of screening of an electrically charged impurity in a clean graphene sheet. When electron-electron interactions are neglected, the screening charge has a sign opposite to that of the impurity, and is localized near the impurity. Interactions between electrons smear out the induced charge density to give a large-distance tail that follows approximately, but not exactly, an r^{-2} behavior and with a sign which is the same as that of the impurity.

Nonrelativistic conformal field theories

We study representations of the Schrödinger algebra in terms of operators in nonrelativistic conformal field theories. We prove a correspondence between primary operators and eigenstates of few-body systems in a harmonic potential. Using the correspondence we compute analytically the energy of fermions at unitarity in a harmonic potential near two and four spatial dimensions. We also compute the energy of anyons in a harmonic potential near the bosonic and fermionic limits.

Hydrodynamics of R-charged black holes

We consider hydrodynamics of N=4 supersymmetric SU(N_c) Yang-Mills plasma at a nonzero density of R-charge. In the regime of large N_c and large 't Hooft coupling the gravity dual description involves an asymptotically Anti- de Sitter five-dimensional charged black hole solution of Behrnd, Cvetic and Sabra. We compute the shear viscosity as a function of chemical potentials conjugated to the three U(1) \subset SO(6)_R charges. The ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potentials and is equal to 1/4π. For a single charge black hole we also compute the thermal conductivity, and investigate the critical behavior of the transport coefficients near the boundary of thermodynamic stability.

Linear Confinement and AdS/QCD

In a theory with linear confinement, such as QCD, the masses squared m^2 of mesons with high spin S or high radial excitation number n are expected, from semiclassical arguments, to grow linearly with S and n. We show that this behavior can be reproduced within a putative 5-dimensional theory holographically dual to QCD (AdS/QCD). With the assumption that such a dual theory exists and describes highly excited mesons as well, we show that asymptotically linear m^2 spectrum translates into a strong constraint on the INFRARED behavior of that theory. In the simplest model which obeys such a constraint we find m^2 ~ (n+S).

QCD and a Holographic Model of Hadrons

We propose a five-dimensional framework for modeling low-energy properties of QCD. In the simplest three parameter model we compute masses, decay rates and couplings of the lightest mesons. The model fits experimental data to within 10%. The framework is a holographic version of the QCD sum rules, motivated by the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence. The model naturally incorporates properties of QCD dictated by chiral symmetry, which we demonstrate by deriving the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relationship for the pion mass.

Holography and hydrodynamics: diffusion on stretched horizons

We show that long-time, long-distance fluctuations of plane-symmetric horizons exhibit universal hydrodynamic behavior. By considering classical fluctuations around black-brane backgrounds, we find both diffusive and shear modes. The diffusion constant and the shear viscosity are given by simple formulas, in terms of metric components. For a given metric, the answers can be interpreted as corresponding kinetic coefficients in the holographically dual theory. For the near-extremal Dp, M2 and M5 branes, the computed kinetic coefficients coincide with the results of independent AdS/CFT calculations. In all the examples, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is equal to \hbar/(4πk_B), suggesting a special meaning of this value.

Longitudinal subtleties in diffusive Langevin equations for non-Abelian plasmas

Boedeker has recently argued that non-perturbative processes in very high temperature non-Abelian plasmas (such as electroweak baryon number violation in the very hot early Universe) can be quantitatively described, to leading logarithmic accuracy, by a simple diffusive effective theory. Boedeker's effective theory is intended to describe the long-distance transverse electric and magnetic fields which are responsible for non-perturbative dynamics. His effective theory, however, also contains long-wavelength longitudinal electric fields. We discuss several subtleties in the treatment of longitudinal dynamics which were not closely examined in Boedeker's original treatment. Somewhat to our surprise, we find that within its domain of validity Boedeker's effective theory does correctly describe both longitudinal and transverse fluctuations. We also show that, as far as the transverse dynamics of interest is concerned, Boedeker's effective theory could be replaced by a transverse-only theory that removes the longitudinal dynamics altogether. In the process, we discuss several interesting aspects of stochastic field theories.

Hot B violation, color conductivity, and log(1/alpha) effects

Bodeker has recently argued that non-perturbative processes in very high temperature non-Abelian plasmas (such as electroweak baryon number violation in the very hot early Universe) are logarithmically enhanced over previous estimates and take place at a rate per unit volume of order $α^5 T^4 \ln(1/α)$ for small coupling. We give a simple physical interpretation of Bodeker's qualitative and quantitative results in terms of Lenz's Law -- the fact that conducting media resist changes in the magnetic field -- and earlier authors' calculations of the color conductivity of such plasmas. In the process, we resolve some confusions in the literature about the value of the color conductivity and present an independent calculation. We also discuss the issue of whether the classical effective theory proposed by Bodeker has a good continuum limit.
