Detectors in Nonrelativistic Conformal Field Theories

Correlations in asymptotic fluxes provide one of the primary experimental means of studying physical systems. In the context of relativistic QFT, the formalization of such experiments in terms of detector operators has led to significant progress. Motivated by these successes, in this paper we initiate a study of detector operators in nonrelativistic conformal field theories (NRCFTs). In NRCFTs, fluxes are distributed in both angle and velocity, making the natural detector operator the energy flux differential in velocity, $\mathcal{E}_v(\hat{n})$. We provide non-perturbative definitions of these operators in NRCFTs, and study their symmetries and algebra. We calculate one-point functions of these detector observables in a variety of few and many body states of representative NRCFTs, including free fermions, as well as fermions at unitarity. In interacting three-body states, they exhibit a remarkably rich behavior reflective of the Efimov three-body wave-function, including the formation of an enhanced "jet" structure due to the presence of resonant interactions. We use these detectors to derive a nonrelativistic generalization of the Hofman-Maldacena conformal collider bounds by arguing for positivity of $\mathcal{E}_v(\hat{n})$, and imposing this in spin 1 states. We outline a number of future directions for the study of detectors in NRCFTs, and discuss how they can be measured in a variety of experimental platforms from cold atoms to low energy neutron experiments.

Nonrelativistic Conformal Collider Physics of Multiparticle Point Production

We define detector operators in the nonrelativistic conformal field theory describing fermions at unitarity. We reduce the problem of computing the momentum distribution and correlation between final particles produced by a local source ("point-produced") to the computation of correlation functions involving the detector operators. The general formalism is applied to the point production of three unitary fermions, where we find the momentum and angular distribution of final particles. We discuss a nonrelativistic version of celestial holography, which maps the asymptotic out-state to a quantum wave function in the so-called "oscillator frame."

Theory of Spinful Relativistic Superfluids

We construct an effective field theory description of relativistic superfluids with nonzero angular momentum density. At first order in the derivative expansion, the effective action contains a term with a quantized coefficient, which encodes the Berry phase for the angular momentum of the superfluid condensate. From this single term we derive a number of physical effects, including the relativistic Mermin-Ho relation, an anomalous Ettingshausen effect (exchangeable for an anomalous Hall effect), and an anomalous Hall viscosity.

Short-distance production of three particles with large scattering length

The short-distance production of multi-particle states in high-energy nuclear reactions provides a unique way to study the low-energy properties of few-body systems. In particular, the production amplitude of multineutron systems is strongly constrained by an approximate conformal symmetry of the underlying theory. We calculate the full amplitude for the short-distance production of three particles with large scattering length in leading order pionless EFT, focusing on the cases of three neutrons and three spinless bosons. We investigate the signature of low-energy resonances and other correlations in the relative energy distributions. For the case of neutrons, we compare to the predictions from approximate conformal symmetry close to the unitary limit and calculate the range corrections up to next-to-next-to leading order.

Spin of fractional quantum Hall neutral modes and "missing states" on a sphere

A low-energy neutral quasiparticle in a fractional quantum Hall system appears in the latter's energy spectrum on a sphere as a series of many-body excited states labeled by the angular momentum $L$ and whose energy is a smooth function of $L$ in the limit of large sphere radius. We argue that the signature of a nonvanishing spin (intrinsic angular momentum) $s$ of the quasiparticle is the absence, in this series, of states with total angular momentum less than $s$.We reinterpret the missing of certain states, observed in an exact-diagonalization calculation of the spectrum of the $ν=7/3$ FQH state in a wide quantum well as well as in many proposed wave functions for the excited states as a consequence of the spin-2 nature of the zero-momentum magnetoroton.

Non-Efimovian two-neutron halos with an $s$-wave core-neutron resonance

We consider two-neutron halo nuclei in which the neutron core subsystem displays a resonance close to threshold. Such resonances can be generated in an effective field theory in which the scattering length and effective range are summed to all orders. We show that no three-body parameter is required to make predictions in this case and map out the universal features of such systems. We furthermore study the dependence of these universal features on the core mass. We apply our framework to the two-neutron halo nucleus ${}^{22}$C.

Droplets of Bosons at a Narrow Resonance

We consider bosons interacting through a narrow $s$-wave resonance. Such a resonance is characterized by an infinite scattering length and a large and negative effective range $r_0$. We argue that any number $N\ge3$ of bosons can form a self-bound cluster with the binding energy per particle increasing as $N^2$ for $1\ll N\ll (-r_0/a_\text{bg})^{1/2}$, where $a_\text{bg}$ is the background scattering length (between atoms and molecules). In the opposite limit $N\gg (-r_0/a_\text{bg})^{1/2}$, bosons form droplets with binding energy per particle saturating to a constant value independent of the particle number. The stability of clusters and droplets when the interaction is detuned from the resonance is also studied.

Chiral Gravitons on the Lattice

Chiral graviton modes are elusive excitations arising from the hidden quantum geometry of fractional quantum Hall states. It remains unclear, however, whether this picture extends to lattice models, where continuum translations are broken and additional quasiparticle decay channels arise. We present a framework in which we explicitly derive a field theory incorporating lattice chiral graviton operators within the paradigmatic bosonic Harper-Hofstadter model. Extensive numerical evidence suggests that chiral graviton modes persist away from the continuum, and are well captured by the proposed lattice operators. We identify geometric quenches as a viable experimental probe, paving the way for the exploration of chiral gravitons in near-term quantum simulation experiments.

Effective field theory for weakly bound two-neutron halo nuclei: corrections from neutron-neutron effective range

Using an effective field-theoretical approach, we investigate the properties of weakly bound two-neutron halo nuclei (also known as Borromean nuclei) that do not support a low-energy $s$-wave core-neutron resonance. Extending the recently formulated effective field theory for weakly bound Borromean nuclei, we incorporate corrections arising from the effective range of neutron-neutron scattering and evaluate their impact on the mean-square radii and electromagnetic response. In particular, we compute the ratio of the matter and charge radii, the shape of the $E1$ dipole strength function, and the electric polarizability. Our results indicate that these corrections remain numerically small when the two-neutron separation energy of the Borromean nucleus is much less than 1~MeV.

Relativistic Guiding-Center Motion: Action Principle, Kinetic Theory, and Hydrodynamics

We treat the guiding-center dynamics in a varying external Maxwell field using a relativistically covariant action principle which reproduces the known Vandervoort expression for the drift velocity and extends it to curved spacetime. We derive the corresponding kinetic theory and ideal hydrodynamic theory. In contrast to conventional five-equation hydrodynamics, the guiding-center hydrodynamics needs only three equations due to a constraint on the motion across magnetic field. We argue that such a hydrodynamics is applicable to strongly coupled plasmas where kinetic theory fails.

Volume-preserving diffeomorphism as nonabelian higher-rank gauge symmetry

We propose nonabelian higher-rank gauge theories in 2+1D and 3+1D. The gauge group is constructed from the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of space. We show that the intriguing physics of the lowest Landau level (LLL) limit can be interpreted as the consequences of the symmetry. We derive the renowned Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) algebra as well as the topological Wen-Zee term within our formalism. Using the gauge symmetry in 2+1D, we derive the LLL effective action of vortex crystal in rotating Bose gas as well as Wigner crystal of electron in an applied magnetic field. We show that the nonlinear sigma models of ferromagnets in 2+1D and 3+1D exhibit the higher-rank gauge symmetries that we introduce in this paper. We interpret the fractonic behavior of the excitations on the lowest Landau level and of skyrmions in ferromagnets as the consequence of the higher-rank gauge symmetry.

Noncommutative Field Theory of the Tkachenko Mode: Symmetries and Decay Rate

We construct an effective field theory describing the collective Tkachenko oscillation mode of a vortex lattice in a two-dimensional rotating Bose-Einstein condensate in the long-wavelength regime. The theory has the form of a noncommutative field theory of a Nambu-Goldstone boson, which exhibits a noncommutative version of dipole symmetry. From the effective field theory, we show that, at zero temperature, the decay width $Γ$ of the Tkachenko mode scales with its energy $E$ as $Γ\sim E^3$ in the low-energy limit. We also discuss the width of the Tkachenko mode at a small temperature.

Applied nonrelativistic conformal field theory: scattering-length and effective-range corrections to unnuclear physics

Due to an accidentally large $s$-wave scattering length, in a relatively wide range of energy, neutrons are approximately described by the nonrelativistic conformal field theory of unitarity fermions, perturbed by one relevant and an infinite number of irrelevant operators. We develop a formalism which provides a nonperturbative definition of local operators in that nonrelativistic conformal field theory. We compute the scattering-length and effective-range corrections to the two-point functions of primary charge-three operators using the technique of conformal perturbation theory. These calculations allow us to find the first corrections to the scale-invariant behavior of the rate of nuclear reactions with three neutrons in the final state in the regime when the neutrons have small relative momenta.

Nonlinear Lifshitz Photon Theory in Condensed Matter Systems

We present an interacting theory of a $U(1)$ gauge boson with a quadratic dispersion relation, which we call the "nonlinear Lifshitz photon theory.'' The Lifshitz photon is a three-dimensional generalization of the Tkachenko mode in rotating superfluids. Starting from the Wigner crystal of charged particles coupled to a dynamical $U(1)$ gauge field, after integrating out gapped degrees of freedom, we arrive at the Lagrangian for the nonlinear Lifshitz photon. The symmetries of the theory include a global $U(1)$ 1-form symmetry and nonlinearly realized "magnetic" translation and rotation symmetries. The interaction terms in the theory lead to the decay of the Lifshitz photon, the rate of which we estimate. We show that the Wilson loop, which plays the role of the order parameter of the spontaneous breaking of the 1-form global symmetry, deviates from the perimeter law by an additional logarithmic factor. We explore potential connections to other condensed matter systems, with a particular focus on quantum spin ice and ferromagnets. Finally, we generalize our theory to higher dimensions.

Nonlinear Bosonization of Fermi Surfaces: The Method of Coadjoint Orbits

We develop a new method for bosonizing the Fermi surface based on the formalism of the coadjoint orbits. This allows one to parametrize the Fermi surface by a bosonic field that depends on the spacetime coordinates and on the position on the Fermi surface. The Wess-Zumino-Witten term in the effective action, governing the adiabatic phase acquired when the Fermi surface changes its shape, is completely fixed. As an effective field theory the action also involves a Hamiltonian which contains, beside the kinetic energy and the Landau interaction, terms with arbitrary number of derivatives and fields. We show that the resulting local effective field theory captures both linear and nonlinear effects in Landau's Fermi liquid theory. The approach can be extended to incorporate spin degrees of freedom and the charge-2 fields corresponding to the BCS order parameter.

Universal Properties of Weakly Bound Two-Neutron Halo Nuclei

We construct an effective field theory of a two-neutron halo nucleus in the limit where the two-neutron separation energy $B$ and the neutron-neutron two-body virtual energy $ε_n$ are smaller than any other energy scale in the problem, but the scattering between the core and a single neutron is not fine-tuned, and the Efimov effect does not operate. The theory has one dimensionless coupling which formally runs to a Landau pole in the ultraviolet. We show that many properties of the system are universal in the double fine-tuning limit. The ratio of the mean-square matter radius and charge radius is found to be $\langle r^2_m \rangle/\langle r^2_c\rangle = A f(ε_n/B)$, where $A$ is the mass number of the core and $f$ is a function of the ratio $ε_n/B$ which we find explicitly. In particular, when $B\ggε_n$, $\langle r^2_m\rangle/\langle r^2_c\rangle = \frac23 A$. The shape of the the $E1$ dipole strength function also depends only on the ratio $ε_n/B$ and is derived in explicit analytic form. We estimate that for the $^{22}$C nucleus higher-order corrections to our theory are of order 20% or less if the two-neutron separation energy is less than 100 keV and the $s$-wave scattering length between a neutron and a $^{20}$C nucleus is less than 2.8 fm.

Snowmass White Paper: Effective Field Theories for Condensed Matter Systems

We review recent progress and a number of future directions for applications of effective field theory methods to condensed matter systems broadly defined. Our emphasis is on areas that have allowed a fertile exchange of ideas between high energy physics and many-body theory. We discuss developments in the effective field theory of spontaneous symmetry breaking, of hydrodynamics and non-equilibrium dynamics more generally, fracton phases of matter, and dualities between 2+1 dimensional field theories. We furthermore discuss the application of effective field theory to non-Fermi liquids, the dynamics of entanglement entropy and to condensed matter aspects of cosmology.
