Two conjectures on coarse conjugacy by Geller and Misiurewicz

In their study of coarse entropy, W. Geller and M. Misiurewicz introduced the notion of coarse conjugacy: a version of conjugacy appropriate for dynamics on metric spaces observed from afar. They made two conjectures on coarse conjugacy generalising their results. We disprove both of these conjectures. We investigate the impact of extra assumptions on the validity of the conjectures: We show that the result of Geller and Misiurewicz towards one of the conjectures can be considered optimal, and we prove the other conjecture under an assumption complementary to that from the referenced work.

Coarse entropy of metric spaces

Coarse geometry studies metric spaces on the large scale. The recently introduced notion of coarse entropy is a tool to study dynamics from the coarse point of view. We prove that all isometries of a given metric space have the same coarse entropy and that this value is a coarse invariant. We call this value the coarse entropy of the space and investigate its connections with other properties of the space. We prove that it can only be either zero or infinity, and although for many spaces this dichotomy coincides with the subexponential--exponential growth dichotomy, there is no relation between coarse entropy and volume growth more generally. We completely characterise this dichotomy for spaces with bounded geometry and for quasi-geodesic spaces. As an application, we provide an example where coarse entropy yields an obstruction for a coarse embedding, where such an embedding is not precluded by considerations of volume growth.

Spectral gap and origami expanders

We construct the first measure-preserving affine actions with spectral gap on surfaces of arbitrary genus $g > 1$. We achieve this by finding geometric representatives of multi-twists on origami surfaces. As a major application, we construct new expanders that are coarsely distinct from the classical expanders obtained via the Laplacian as Cayley graphs of finite quotients of a group. Our methods also show that the Margulis expander, and hence the Gabber--Galil expander, is coarsely distinct from the Selberg expander.

Dynamic asymptotic dimension for actions of virtually cyclic groups

We show that the dynamic asymptotic dimension of a minimal free action of an infinite virtually cyclic group on a compact Hausdorff space is always one. This extends a well-known result of Guentner, Willett, and Yu for minimal free actions of infinite cyclic groups. Furthermore, the minimality assumption can be replaced by the marker property, and we prove the marker property for all free actions of countable groups on finite dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces, generalising a result of Szabo in the metrisable setting.

Straightening warped cones

We provide the converses to two results of J. Roe (Geom. Topol. 2005): first, the warped cone associated to a free action of an a-T-menable group admits a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space, and second, a free action yielding a warped cone with property A must be amenable. We construct examples showing that in both cases the freeness assumption is necessary. The first equivalence is obtained also for other classes of Banach spaces, in particular for $L^p$-spaces.

Super-expanders and warped cones

For a Banach space $X$, we show that any family of graphs quasi-isometric to levels of a warped cone $\mathcal O_ΓY$ is an expander with respect to $X$ if and only if the induced $Γ$-representation on $L^2(Y;X)$ has a spectral gap. This provides examples of graphs that are an expander with respect to all Banach spaces of non-trivial type.

Warped cones, (non-)rigidity, and piecewise properties, with a joint appendix with Dawid Kielak

We prove that if a quasi-isometry of warped cones is induced by a map between the base spaces of the cones, the actions must be conjugate by this map. The converse is false in general, conjugacy of actions is not sufficient for quasi-isometry of the respective warped cones. For a general quasi-isometry of warped cones, using the asymptotically faithful covering constructed in a previous work with Jianchao Wu, we deduce that the two groups are quasi-isometric after taking Cartesian products with suitable powers of the integers. Secondly, we characterise geometric properties of a group (coarse embeddability into Banach spaces, asymptotic dimension, property A) by properties of the warped cone over an action of this group. These results apply to arbitrary asymptotically faithful coverings, in particular to box spaces. As an application, we calculate the asymptotic dimension of a warped cone, improve bounds by Szabó, Wu, and Zacharias and by Bartels on the amenability dimension of actions of virtually nilpotent groups, and give a partial answer to a question of Willett about dynamic asymptotic dimension. In the appendix, we justify optimality of the aforementioned result on general quasi-isometries by showing that quasi-isometric warped cones need not come from quasi-isometric groups, contrary to the case of box spaces.

On equivariant asymptotic dimension

The work discusses equivariant asymptotic dimension (also known as "wide equivariant covers", "$N$-$\mathcal F$-amenability" or "amenability dimension", and "$d$-BLR condition") and its generalisation, transfer reducibility, which are versions of asymptotic dimension invented for the proofs of the Farrell--Jones and Borel conjectures. We prove that groups of null equivariant asymptotic dimension are exactly virtually cyclic groups. We show that a covering of the boundary always extends to a covering of the whole compactification. We provide a number of characterisations of equivariant asymptotic dimension in the general setting of homotopy actions, including equivariant counterparts of classical characterisations of asymptotic dimension. Finally, we strengthen the result of Mole and Rueping (arXiv:1308.2799) about equivariant refinements from finite groups to infinite groups.

Warped cones over profinite completions

We construct metric spaces that do not have property A yet are coarsely embeddable into the Hilbert space. Our examples are so called warped cones, which were introduced by J. Roe to serve as examples of spaces non-embeddable into a Hilbert space and with or without property A. The construction provides the first examples of warped cones combining coarse embeddability and lack of property A. We also construct warped cones over manifolds with isometrically embedded expanders and generalise Roe's criteria for the lack of property A or coarse embeddability of a warped cone. Along the way, it is proven that property A of the warped cone over a profinite completion is equivalent to amenability of the group. In the appendix we solve a problem of Nowak regarding his examples of spaces with similar properties.

Warped cones and spectral gaps

We show that warped cones over actions with spectral gaps do not embed coarsely into large classes of Banach spaces. In particular, there exist warped cones over actions of the free group that do not embed coarsely into $L_p$-spaces and there are warped cones over discrete group actions that do not embed into any Banach space with non-trivial type.

Remarks on coarse triviality of asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension

We show for a given metric space $(X,d)$ of asymptotic dimension $n$ that there exists a coarsely and topologically equivalent hyperbolic metric $d'$ of the form $d' = f \circ d$ such that $(X,d')$ is of asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension $n$. As a corollary we construct examples of spaces realising strict inequality in the logarithmic law for AN-asdim of a Cartesian product. One of them may be viewed as a counterexample to a specific kind of a Morita-type theorem for AN-asdim.
