Minimally generated Boolean algebras and the Nikodym property

A Boolean algebra $\mathcal A$ has the Nikodym property if every pointwise bounded sequence of bounded finitely additive measures on $\mathcal A$ is uniformly bounded. Assuming the Diamond Principle $\Diamond$, we will construct an example of a minimally generated Boolean algebra $\mathcal A$ with the Nikodym property. The Stone space of such an algebra must necessarily be an Efimov space. The converse is, however, not true - again under $\Diamond$ we will provide an example of a minimally generated Boolean algebra whose Stone space is Efimov but which does not have the Nikodym property. The results have interesting measure-theoretic and topological consequences.

On sequences of homomorphisms into measure algebras and the Efimov Problem

For given Boolean algebras $\mathbb{A}$ and $\mathbb{B}$ we endow the space $\mathcal{H}(\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B})$ of all Boolean homomorphisms from $\mathbb{A}$ to $\mathbb{B}$ with various topologies and study convergence properties of sequences in $\mathcal{H}(\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B})$. We are in particular interested in the situation when $\mathbb{B}$ is a measure algebra as in this case we obtain a natural tool for studying topological convergence properties of sequences of ultrafilters on $\mathbb{A}$ in random extensions of the set-theoretical universe. This appears to have strong connections with Dow and Fremlin's result stating that there are Efimov spaces in the random model. We also investigate relations between topologies on $\mathcal{H}(\mathbb{A},\mathbb{B})$ for a Boolean algebra $\mathbb{B}$ carrying a strictly positive measure and convergence properties of sequences of measures on $\mathbb{A}$.

Convergence of measures in forcing extensions

We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a $σ$-complete Boolean algebra in a model $V$ of set theory and $\mathbb{P}\in V$ is a proper forcing with the Laver property preserving the ground model reals non-meager, then every pointwise convergent sequence of measures on $\mathcal{A}$ in a $\mathbb{P}$-generic extension $V[G]$ is weakly convergent, i.e. $\mathcal{A}$ has the Vitali--Hahn--Saks property in $V[G]$. This yields a consistent example of a whole class of infinite Boolean algebras with this property and of cardinality strictly smaller than the dominating number $\mathfrak{d}$. We also obtain a new consistent situation in which there exists an Efimov space.

Countable tightness in the spaces of regular probability measures

We prove that if $K$ is a compact space and the space $P(K\times K)$ of regular probability measures on $K\times K$ has countable tightness in its $weak^*$ topology, then $L_1(μ)$ is separable for every $μ\in P(K)$. It has been known that such a result is a consequence of Martin's axiom MA$(ω_1)$. Our theorem has several consequences; in particular, it generalizes a theorem due to Bourgain and Todorčević on measures on Rosenthal compacta.
