Some recent progress on sharp Fourier restriction theory

The purpose of this note is to discuss several results that have been obtained in the last decade in the context of sharp adjoint Fourier restriction/Strichartz inequalities. Rather than aiming at full generality, we focus on several concrete examples of underlying manifolds with large groups of symmetries, which sometimes allows for simple geometric proofs. We mention several open problems along the way, and include an appendix on integration on manifolds using delta calculus.

A sharp trilinear inequality related to Fourier restriction on the circle

In this paper we prove a sharp trilinear inequality which is motivated by a program to obtain the sharp form of the $L^2 - L^6$ Tomas-Stein adjoint restriction inequality on the circle. Our method uses intricate estimates for integrals of sixfold products of Bessel functions developed in a companion paper. We also establish that constants are local extremizers of the Tomas-Stein adjoint restriction inequality as well as of another inequality appearing in the program.

Atlas of products for wave-Sobolev spaces on $\mathbf R^{1+3}$

The wave-Sobolev spaces $H^{s,b}$ are $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces on the Minkowski space-time $\R^{1+n}$, with Fourier weights are adapted to the symbol of the d'Alembertian. They are a standard tool in the study of regularity properties of nonlinear wave equations, and in such applications the need arises for product estimates in these spaces. Unfortunately, it seems that with every new application some estimates come up which have not yet appeared in the literature, and then one has to resort to a set of well-established procedures for proving the missing estimates. To relieve the tedium of having to constantly fill in such gaps "by hand", we make here a systematic effort to determine the complete set of estimates in the bilinear case. We determine a set of necessary conditions for a product estimate $H^{s_1,b_1} \cdot H^{s_2,b_2} \hookrightarrow H^{-s_0,-b_0}$ to hold. These conditions define a polyhedron $Ω$ in the space $\R^6$ of exponents $(s_0,s_1,s_2,b_0,b_1,b_2)$. We then show, in space dimension $n=3$, that all points in the interior of $Ω$, and all points on the faces minus the edges, give product estimates. We can also allow some but not all points on the edges, but here we do not claim to have the sharp result. The corresponding result for $n=2$ and $n=1$ will be published elsewhere.

Null structure and almost optimal local well-posedness of the Maxwell-Dirac system

We uncover the full null structure of the Maxwell-Dirac system in Lorenz gauge. This structure, which cannot be seen in the individual component equations, but only when considering the system as a whole, is expressed in terms of tri- and quadrilinear integral forms with cancellations measured by the angles between spatial frequencies. In the 3D case, we prove frequency-localized $L^2$ space-time estimates for these integral forms at the scale invariant regularity up to a logarithmic loss, hence we obtain almost optimal local well-posedness of the system by iteration.

Maximizers for the Strichartz inequality

We compute explicitely the best constants and, by solving some functional equations, we find all maximizers for homogeneous Strichartz estimates for the Schrodinger equation and for the wave equation in the cases when the Lebesgue exponent is an even integer.

Local well-posedness below the charge norm for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system in two space dimensions

We prove that the Cauchy problem for the Dirac-Klein-Gordon equations in two space dimensions is locally well-posed in a range of Sobolev spaces of negative index for the Dirac spinor, and an associated range of spaces of positive index for the meson field. In particular, we can go below the charge norm, that is, the $L^2$ norm of the spinor. We hope that this can have implications for the global existence problem, since the charge is conserved. Our result relies on the null structure of the system, and bilinear space-time estimates for the homogeneous wave equation.

Null structure and almost optimal local well-posedness of the Dirac-Klein-Gordon system

We prove almost optimal local well-posedness for the coupled Dirac-Klein-Gordon (DKG) system of equations in 1+3 dimensions. The proof relies on the null structure of the system, combined with bilinear spacetime estimates of Klainerman-Machedon type. It has been known for some time that the Klein-Gordon part of the system has a null structure; here we uncover an additional null structure in the Dirac equation, which cannot be seen directly, but appears after a duality argument.

Inhomogeneous Strichartz estimates

We look for the optimal range of Lebesque exponents for which inhomogeneous Strichartz estimates are valid. We show that it is larger than the one given by admissible exponents for homogeneous estimates. We prove inhomogeneous estimates adopting the abstract setting and interpolation techniques already used by Keel and Tao for the endpoint case of the homogenenous estimates. Applications to Schrodinger equations are given, which extend previous work by Kato.

Some remarks on the $L^p-L^q$ boundedness of trigonometric sums and oscillatory integrals

We discuss the asymptotic behaviour for the best constant in L^p-L^q estimates for trigonometric polinomials and for an integral operator which is related to the solution of inhomogeneous Schrodinger equations. This gives us an opportunity to review some basic facts about oscillatory integrals and the method of stationary phase, and also to make some remarks in connection with Strichartz estimates.
