Sources in the Weyl double copy

The Weyl double copy relates exact solutions in general relativity to exact solutions in gauge theory, formulated in the spinorial language. To date, the Weyl double copy is understood and employed only for vacuum spacetimes, and hence only to vacuum gauge theories. In this letter, we propose an extension to the Weyl double copy that provides a systematic procedure for treating gravitational sources. We show this extended Weyl double copy gives a new perspective on the Kerr-Newman black hole and the general class of Petrov type D electro-vac spacetimes.

Cosmic acceleration from string induced Galileons

It has been shown a specific Horndeski theory of gravity arises from a consistent Kaluza-Klein reduction of the gravi-dilaton sector of the low-energy effective heterotic string action with a first $α'$ correction. Here we provide a first investigation of the cosmological solutions to the lower dimensional theory by constructing exact solutions to the field equations in various frames. At tree level, in string frame, we find the duality symmetry of the parent theory is unaltered by dimensional reduction, leading to standard bouncing and pre-Big Bang scenario solutions. For $α'\neq0$, we uncover exact models exhibiting cosmic acceleration, where we find interesting physics concerning the number of noncompact dimensions. Certain stability requirements demand the inclusion of a dilaton potential.

$D\to4$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet Gravity and Beyond

A `novel' pure theory of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in four-spacetime dimensions can be constructed by rescaling the Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant, seemingly eluding Lovelock's theorem. Recently, however, the well-posedness of this model has been called into question. Here we apply a `dimensional regularization' technique, first used by Mann and Ross to write down a $D\to2$ limit of general relativity, to the case of pure Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The resulting four-dimensional action is a particular Horndeski theory of gravity matching the result found via a Kaluza-Klein reduction over a flat internal space. Some cosmological solutions of this four-dimensional theory are examined. We further adapt the technique to higher curvature Lovelock theories of gravity, as well as a low-energy effective string action with an $α'$ correction. With respect to the $D\to4$ limit of the $α'$-corrected string action, we find we must also rescale the dilaton to have a non-singular action in four dimensions. Interestingly, when the conformal rescaling $Φ$ is interpreted as another dilaton, the regularized string action appears to be a special case of a covariant multi-Galileon theory of gravity.

The classical double copy of non-singular black holes

We apply the classical double copy procedure to a class of regular, non-singular black hole solutions. We give several examples, paying particular attention to a string-theory-corrected black hole solution emerging from T-duality. Non-perturbative stringy corrections introduce an ultraviolet (UV) zero-point length cutoff which results in non-singular black hole spacetimes. Apart from the UV regulator, the solution is equivalent to the Bardeen black hole spacetime. We extend this solution to include an asymptotic de Sitter background. All Yang-Mills field theory quantities associated with the double copy are well-behaved and finite for all values of parameters. We present a thorough analysis of the black hole horizon structure, additionally uncovering a simple yet new connection between horizons on the gravity side and electric fields on the gauge theory side of the double copy.

Testing the equivalence principle via the shadow of black holes

We study the equivalence principle, regarded as the cornerstone of general relativity, by analyzing the deformation observable of black hole shadows. Such deformation can arise from new physics and may be expressed as a phenomenological violation of the equivalence principle. Specifically, we assume that there is an additional background vector field that couples to the photons around the supermassive black hole. This type of coupling yields impact on the way the system depends on initial conditions, and affects the black hole shadow at different wavelengths by a different amount, and therefore observations of the shadow in different wavelengths could constrain such couplings. This can be tested by future multi-band observations. Adopting a specific form of the vector field, we obtain constraints on model parameters from Event Horizon Telescope observations and measurements of gas/stellar orbits.

Stable Cosmic Time Crystals

Cosmological time crystals are created when a scalar field moves periodically through phase space in a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime due to the presence of a limit cycle. All such cosmological time crystals in the literature suffer from gradient instabilities occurring at Null Energy Condition violating phases where the square sound speed for cosmological perturbations becomes negative. Here we present stable cosmological time crystals. Our analysis suggests this new form of scalar matter--cosmic time crystals--may be considered as a physically viable cosmological matter source.

Numerical study of inflationary preheating with arbitrary power-law potential and a realization of curvaton mechanism

During inflationary preheating, the energy stored in the inflaton field is rapidly converted into excitations of other entropy fields. This stage is characterized by exponential particle production due to parametric resonance and is notoriously difficult to analyze using analytic methods. We develop a detailed numerical simulation to investigate inflationary preheating when the potential of the inflaton is a power-law function with arbitrary power index. To achieve a successful graceful exit from a primordial inflationary phase to a smooth, oscillatory phase during preheating, we assume the inflaton potential reduces to a quadratic function in the infrared regime, which may be regarded as a mass term at low energy scales. With this simplification, our numerical method may be applied to unconventional chaotic inflation models. To demonstrate its validity, we numerically analyze the preheating stage of axion-monodromy inflation which is inspired by string theory. By performing perturbation analyses, our result shows that the power spectrum of primordial curvature perturbation can be dominated by fluctuations of entropy field rather than those of inflaton, which can be regarded as a particular realization of the curvaton mechanism through a preheating process.

Nonsingular Schwarzschild-de Sitter Black Hole

We combine notions of a maximal curvature scale in nature with that of a minimal curvature scale to construct a non-singular Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole. We present an exact solution within the context of two-dimensional dilaton gravity. For a range of parameters the solution approaches Schwarzschild-de Sitter at large values of the radial coordinate, asymptotically approaching a de Sitter metric with constant minimal curvature, while approaching a maximal constant curvature smooth spacetime as the radial coordinate approaches zero. The spacetime is geodesically complete and generically has both a black hole horizon and a cosmological horizon.

Magnetogenesis in bouncing cosmology

We consider the process of magnetogenesis in the context of nonsingular bounce cosmology. We show that large primordial magnetic fields can be generated during contraction without encountering strong coupling and backreaction issues. The fields may seed large-scale magnetic fields with observationally interesting strengths. This result leads to a theoretical constraint on the relation of the energy scale of the bounce cosmology to the number of effective e-folding of the contracting phase in the case of scale invariance for the power spectrum of primordial magnetic fields. We show that this constraint can be satisfied in a sizable region of the parameter space for the nonsingular bounce cosmology.

The Phantom of the New Oscillatory Cosmological Phase

We study a recently proposed new cosmological phase where a scalar field moves periodically in an expanding spatially-flat Friedmann universe. This phase corresponds to a limiting cycle of the equations of motion and can be considered as a cosmological realization of a "time-crystal". We show that this phase is only possible, provided the Null Energy Condition is violated and the so-called Phantom divide is crossed. We prove that in general k-essence models: i) this crossing causes infinite growth of quantum perturbations on short scales, and ii) exactly periodic solutions are only possible, provided the limiting cycle encircles a singularity in the phase plane. The configurations neighboring this singular curve in the phase space are linearly unstable on one side of the curve and superluminal on the other side. Moreover, the increment of the instability is infinitely growing for each mode by approaching the singularity, while for the configurations on the other side, the sound speed is growing without limit. We illustrate our general results by analytical and numerical studies of a particular class of such k-essence models.

Searching for a matter bounce cosmology with low redshift observations

The matter bounce scenario allows for a sizable parameter space where cosmological fluctuations originally exited the Hubble radius when the background energy density was small. In this scenario and its extended versions, the low energy degrees of freedom are likely responsible for the statistical properties of the cosmic microwave background power spectrum at large length scales. An interesting consequence is that these modes might be observable only at relatively late times. Therefore low redshift observations could provide evidence for, or even falsify, various bouncing models. We provide an example where a recently hinted potential deviation from $Λ$-cold-dark-matter cosmology results from a dark matter and dark energy interaction. The same interaction allows matter bounce models to generate a red tilt for the primordial curvature perturbations in corroboration with cosmic microwave background experiments.

Exotica ex nihilo: Traversable wormholes & non-singular black holes from the vacuum of quadratic gravity

We present new traversable wormhole and non-singular black hole solutions in pure, scale-free $R^2$ gravity. These exotic solutions require no null energy condition violating or "exotic" matter and are supported only by the vacuum of the theory. It is well known that $f(R)$ theories of gravity may be recast as dual theories in the Einstein frame. The solutions we present are found when the conformal transformation required to move to the dual frame is singular. For quadratic $R^2$ gravity, the required conformal factor is identically zero for spacetimes with $R=0$. Solutions in this case are argued to arise in the strong coupling limit of General Relativity.

Reheating predictions in single field inflation

Reheating is a transition era after the end of inflation, during which the inflaton is converted into the particles that populate the Universe at later times. No direct cosmological observables are normally traceable to this period of reheating. Indirect bounds can however be derived. One possibility is to consider cosmological evolution for observable CMB scales from the time of Hubble crossing to the present time. Depending upon the model, the duration and final temperature after reheating, as well as its equation of state, may be directly linked to inflationary observables. For single-field inflationary models, if we approximate reheating by a constant equation of state, one can derive relations between the reheating duration (or final temperature), its equation of state parameter, and the scalar power spectrum amplitude and spectral index. While this is a simple approximation, by restricting the equation of state to lie within a broad physically allowed range, one can in turn bracket an allowed range of $n_s$ and $r$ for these models. The added constraints can help break degeneracies between inflation models that otherwise overlap in their predictions for $n_s$ and $r$.

Planck constraints on Higgs modulated reheating of renormalization group improved inflation

Within the framework of RG improved inflationary cosmology motivated by asymptotically safe gravity, we study the dynamics of a scalar field which can be interpreted as the Higgs field. The background trajectories of this model can provide sufficient inflationary e-folds and a graceful exit to a radiation dominated phase. We study the possibility of generating primordial curvature perturbations through the Standard Model Higgs boson. This can be achieved under finely tuned parameter choices by making use of the modulated reheating mechanism. The primordial non-gaussianity is expected to be sizable in this model. Though tightly constrained by the newly released Planck CMB data, this model provides a potentially interesting connection between collider and early universe physics.

Energy Conditions in Jordan Frame

The null energy condition, in its usual form, can appear to be violated by transformations in the conformal frame of the metric. We propose a generalization of the form of the null energy condition to Jordan frame, in which matter is non-minimally coupled, which reduces to the familiar form in Einstein frame. Using our version of the null energy condition, we provide a direct proof of the second law of black hole thermodynamics in Jordan frame.

When Matter Matters

We study a recently proposed scenario for the early universe: Subluminal Galilean Genesis. We prove that without any other matter present in the spatially flat Friedmann universe, the perturbations of the Galileon scalar field propagate with a speed at most equal to the speed of light. This proof applies to all cosmological solutions -- to the whole phase space. However, in a more realistic situation, when one includes any matter which is not directly coupled to the Galileon, there always exists a region of phase space where these perturbations propagate superluminally, indeed with arbitrarily high speed. We illustrate our analytic proof with numerical computations. We discuss the implications of this result for the possible UV completion of the model.

The Degeneracy Problem in Non-Canonical Inflation

While attempting to connect inflationary theories to observational physics, a potential difficulty is the degeneracy problem: a single set of observables maps to a range of different inflaton potentials. Two important classes of models affected by the degeneracy problem are canonical and non-canonical models, the latter marked by the presence of a non-standard kinetic term that generates observables beyond the scalar and tensor two-point functions on CMB scales. The degeneracy problem is manifest when these distinguishing observables go undetected. We quantify the size of the resulting degeneracy in this case by studying the most well-motivated non-canonical theory having Dirac-Born-Infeld Lagrangian. Beyond the scalar and tensor two-point functions on CMB scales, we then consider the possible detection of equilateral non-Gaussianity at Planck-precision and a measurement of primordial gravitational waves from prospective space-based laser interferometers. The former detection breaks the degeneracy with canonical inflation but results in poor reconstruction prospects, while the latter measurement enables a determination of $n_T$ which, while not breaking the degeneracy, can be shown to greatly improve the non-canonical reconstruction.
