Terahertz Fourier Ptychographic Imaging

High-resolution imaging in the terahertz (THz) spectral range remains fundamentally constrained by the limited numerical apertures of currently existing state-of-the-art imagers, which restricts its applicability across many fields, such as imaging in complex media or nondestructive testing. To address this challenge, we introduce a proof-of-concept implementation of THz Fourier Ptychographic imaging to enhance spatial resolution without requiring extensive hardware modifications. Our method employs a motorized kinematic mirror to generate a sequence of controlled, multi-angle plane-wave illuminations, with each resulting oblique-illumination intensity image encoding a limited portion of the spatial-frequency content of the target imaging sample. These measurements are combined in the Fourier domain using an aberration-corrected iterative phase-retrieval algorithm integrated with an efficient illumination calibration scheme, which enables the reconstruction of resolution-enhanced amplitude and phase images through the synthetic expansion of the effective numerical aperture. Our work establishes a robust framework for high-resolution THz imaging and paves the way for a wide array of applications in materials characterization, spectroscopy, and non-destructive evaluation.

Broadband THz emission of long pulses from photomixing process with optical chirped pulses

Terahertz (THz) generation via photomixing on photoconductive antenna using twin delayed chirped pulses provides a long THz pulse with a narrow bandwidth. To generate a long pulse with broad bandwidth, we propose a new method that combines two long optical pulses with opposite chirps. The pulses exhibit temporal distributions of their instantaneous frequencies with opposite slopes. As a result, interaction between the beat frequency evolving over time and a photoconductor produces a broad THz spectrum with temporal variations. In our experimental setup, we generate a 12 ps-long pulse with a 1 THz bandwidth spectrum, featuring a frequency ramp of 90 GHz/ps, resembling a chirped THz pulse. This approach signifies a major advancement toward integrating photomixer technology, particularly in THz ranging applications.

Near infrared few-cycle pulses for high harmonic generation

We report on the development of tunable few-cycle pulses with central wavelengths from 1.6 um to 2 um. Theses pulses were used as a proof of principle for high harmonic generation in atomic and molecular targets. In order to generate such pulses we produced a filament in a 4 bar krypton cell. Spectral broadening by a factor of 2 to 3 of a 40 fs near infrared input pulse was achieved. The spectrally broadened output pulses were then compressed by fused silica plates down to the few-cycle regime close to the Fourier limit. The auto-correlation of these pulses revealed durations of about 3 cycles for all investigated central wavelengths. Pulses with a central wavelength of 1.7 um and up to 430 uJ energy per pulse were employed to generate high order harmonics in Xe, Ar and N2. Moving to near infrared few-cycle pulses opens the possibility to operate deeply in the non-perturbative regime with a Keldysh parameter smaller than 1. Hence, this source is suitable for the study of the non-adiabatic tunneling regime in most generating systems used for high order harmonic generation and attoscience.

Coherent Control of spin-orbit precession with shaped laser pulses

Spin precession in Rubidium atoms is investigated through a pump-probe technique. The excited wave packet corresponds to a precession of spin and orbital angular momentum around the total angular momentum. We show that using shaped laser pulses allows us to control this dynamics. With a Fourier transform limited pulse, the wave packet is initially prepared in the bright state (coupled to the initial state) whereas a pulse presenting a $π$ step in the spectral phase prepares the wave packet in the dark state (uncoupled to the initial state).

Factorization of Numbers with the temporal Talbot effect: Optical implementation by a sequence of shaped ultrashort pulses

We report on the successful operation of an analogue computer designed to factor numbers. Our device relies solely on the interference of classical light and brings together the field of ultrashort laser pulses with number theory. Indeed, the frequency component of the electric field corresponding to a sequence of appropriately shaped femtosecond pulses is determined by a Gauss sum which allows us to find the factors of a number.
