Continuum Determination of Light Quark Masses from Quenched Lattice QCD

We compute the strange and the average up/down quark masses in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD, by using the O(a)-improved Wilson action and operators and by implementing the non-perturbative renormalization. Our computation is performed at four values of the lattice spacing, from which we could extrapolate to the continuum limit. Our final result for the strange quark mass (in the MSbar scheme) is ms(2 GeV) = (106 +/- 2 +/- 8) MeV. For the average up/down quark mass we have ml(2 GeV) = (4.4 +/- 0.1 +/- 0.4) MeV. The ratio ms/ml = (24.3 +/- 0.2 +/- 0.6).

Theoretical progress in describing the B-meson lifetimes

The present status of the theoretical estimates of the difference between the widths of the neutral Bs-mesons and of the B-meson lifetime ratios is reviewed. In particular, the lattice results for the matrix elements of the relevant (delta B=2)-operators are updated and the first lattice QCD results for the matrix elements of (delta B=0)-operators are presented. In both cases, the NLO perturbative QCD corrections in the coefficient functions have been included. The theoretically updated results are: (delta Gamma/Gamma)_{Bs} = (7 +/- 4) %, tau(B+)/tau(Bd) = 1.07(3) and tau(Bs)/tau(Bd) = 1.00(2).

Charm Quark Mass

We report on the result for the charm quark mass as obtained from our lattice QCD computation in the quenched approximation. Our result in the MSbar scheme is m_c(m_c)=1.26(4)(12) GeV.

An Estimate of the K0-K0bar Mixing Amplitude

We computed the B_K parameter on the lattice by using a non-perturbatively improved Wilson action. From our quenched simulation, in the MSbar scheme and at mu=2 GeV, we obtain B_K=0.73(7)^{+0.05}_{-0.01}. To gain some insight in the systematic errors due to the use of the quenched approximation, we also made the unquenched computation with Wilson fermions. We do not observe any significant deviation with respect to the quenched result.

Heavy Quark Phenomenology from Lattice QCD

Recent results relevant for the B-physics phenomenology, obtained from lattice QCD simulations by the APE Collaboration, are reviewed. This includes the B0-B0bar mixing amplitude, B-> pi semileptonic decay and the relative width difference of B0_s mesons, $(ΔΓ/Γ)_{B_s}$.

Light Quark Masses from Lattice Quark Propagators at Large Momenta

We compute non-perturbatively the average up-down and strange quark masses from the large momentum (short-distance) behaviour of the quark propagator in the Landau gauge. This method, which has never been applied so far, does not require the explicit calculation of the quark mass renormalization constant. Calculations were performed in the quenched approximation, by using O(a)-improved Wilson fermions. The main results of this study are ml^RI(2GeV)=5.8(6)MeV and ms^RI(2GeV)=136(11)MeV. Using the relations between different schemes, obtained from the available four-loop anomalous dimensions, we also find ml^RGI=7.6(8)MeV and ms^RGI=177(14)MeV, and the MSbar-masses, ml^MS(2GeV)=4.8(5)MeV and ms^MS(2GeV)=111(9)MeV.

Comment on the heavy-->light form factors

We propose a simple parametrization for the form factors in heavy to light decays which satisfies the heavy quark scaling laws and avoids introducing the explicit "dipole" form. The illustration is provided on the set of lattice data for B -> pi, semileptonic decay. The resulting shape of the form factor also agrees with the QCD sum rule predictions.

g-coupling (g_B*Bpi,g_D*Dpi); A quark model with Dirac equation

We discuss the strong coupling of heavy mesons to a pion g, in the heavy quark limit. This quantity is quite remarkable since its values as estimated by different methods (various quark models and the QCD sum rules), are surprisingly different. The present quark models are mostly based on free spinors and their predictions depend crucially on the choice of the light quark mass. We propose a quark model based on the Dirac equation in a central potential, which gives a more refined description of Dirac spinors. We show that within such a Dirac model, the value of g is stable and large: g = 0.6(1), where we assume no quark current renormalization ((g_A)q = 1). Such a large result is strongly constrained by requiring that the model parameters fit the spectrum; we show that this implies a large ``effective'' light mass. It is also supported phenomenologically by a similar situation with heavy baryons, as well as by experience with nucleon (if one invokes additivity). We also calculate the couplings to heavy meson excitations, and show that the Adler-Weisberger sum rule is well saturated by a few levels (in contrast to the case of small g). We discuss uncertainties of our approach, and rise several questions which remain to be answered. The main mystery is the large, unusual discrepancy with QCD sum rules for g, whereas a good agreement is found for orbital excitations.

Notes on $B\to K^* γ$

We analyzed two form factors $T_1(q^2)$ and $T_2(q^2)$ which enter the $B\to K^* \ell^+ \ell^-$ decay rate and are accessible in the lattice calculations for $B \to K^* γ$. The extrapolation to $q^2=0$, necessary for $B\to K^* γ$ is examined. The flat behavior of $T_2(q^2)$ is shown to be disfavored. From the double constrained unitarity bounds by the lattice result at small recoil and the light cone sum rule one at large recoil, the pole/double pole fit is preferred with the `pole' masses as free parameters. We also show a consistency of two approaches in the heavy quark limit. Besides several byproducts of this analysis, our final (conservative) result for the form factor that determines $B\to K^* γ$ rate is $T(0)=0.15\pm 0.04$.

$B \to ρ\ell ν_\ell$ Form Factors

The bounds on the form factors for $B \to ρ\ell ν_\ell$ decay are studied. Constrained by lattice data and a constrained conformal mapping, the more informations can be obtained for $A_1(q^2)$ form-factor which dominates the decay rate at large $q^2$. Specifically, we confirm a moderately increasing behavior of this form factor.

Improved Constraints on $B \to π\ell \barν_{\ell}$ Form Factors

The behavior of the $\bpi$ form factors in the entire physical range is examined in a model independent way. Unitarity bounds are further constrained by the lattice results (APE). From this analysis, we obtain $f^{+}(0) = 0.38 \pm .03$ if the $B^{*}$-pole dominance behavior is assumed. However, to get the information on the behavior of the form factor $f^{+}$, QSR results are included. We see the deviations from the pole dominance due to the contributions of the higher singularities which are to be treated with more precise lattice data.
