Base norm spaces--classical, complex, and noncommutative

We generalize the theory of base norm spaces to the complex case, and further to the noncommutative setting relevant to `quantum convexity'. In particular, we establish the duality between complex Archimedean order unit spaces and complex base norm spaces, as well as the corresponding duality between their noncommutative counterparts. Additional topics include an exploration of natural connections with various notions of quantum convexity and regularity of noncommutative convex sets, and an analysis of how these concepts interact with complexification. We also define, as in the classical case, a class that contains and generates the noncommutative base norm spaces, but is defined by fewer axioms. We show how this may be applied to provide new and interesting examples of noncommutative base norm spaces.

Multipliers and Hereditary Subalgebras of Operator Algebras

We generalize some technical results of Glicksberg to the realm of general operator algebras and use them to give a characterization of open and closed projections in terms of certain multiplier algebras. This generalizes a theorem of J. Wells characterizing an important class of ideals in uniform algebras. The difficult implication in our main theorem is that if a projection is open in an operator algebra, then the multiplier algebra of the associated hereditary subalgebra arises as the closure of the subalgebra with respect to the strict topology of the multiplier algebra of a naturally associated hereditary C*-subalgebra. This immediately implies that the multiplier algebra of an operator algebra A may be obtained as the strict closure of A in the multiplier algebra of the C*-algebra generated by A.

Non-Commutative Partial Matrix Convexity

Let $p$ be a polynomial in the non-commuting variables $(a,x)=(a_1,...,a_{g_a},x_1,...,x_{g_x})$. If $p$ is convex in the variables $x$, then $p$ has degree two in $x$ and moreover, $p$ has the form $p = L + Λ^T Λ,$ where $L$ has degree at most one in $x$ and $Λ$ is a (column) vector which is linear in $x,$ so that $Λ^TΛ$ is a both sum of squares and homogeneous of degree two. Of course the converse is true also. Further results involving various convexity hypotheses on the $x$ and $a$ variables separately are presented.

Closed projections and peak interpolation for operator algebras

The closed one-sided ideals of a C*-algebra are exactly the closed subspaces supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection. Let A be a (not necessarily selfadjoint) subalgebra of a unital C*-algebra B which contains the unit of B. Here we characterize the right ideals of A with left contractive approximate identity as those subspaces of A supported by the orthogonal complement of a closed projection in B** which also lies in the weak* closure of A. Although this seems quite natural, the proof requires a set of new techniques which may may be viewed as a noncommutative version of the subject of peak interpolation from the theory of function spaces. Thus, the right ideals with left approximate identity are closely related to a type of peaking phenomena in the algebra. In this direction we introduce a class of closed projections which generalizes the notion of a peak set in the theory of uniform algebras to the world of operator algebras and operator spaces.

Hereditary subalgebras of operator algebras

In recent work of the second author, a technical result was proved establishing a bijective correspondence between certain open projections in a C*-algebra containing an operator algebra A, and certain one-sided ideals of A. Here we give several remarkable consequences of this result. These include a generalization of the theory of hereditary subalgebras of a C*-algebra, and the solution of a ten year old problem on the Morita equivalence of operator algebras. In particular, the latter gives a very clean generalization of the notion of Hilbert C*-modules to nonselfadjoint algebras. We show that an `ideal' of a general operator space X is the intersection of X with an `ideal' in any containing C*-algebra or C*-module. Finally, we discuss the noncommutative variant of the classical theory of `peak sets'.

Complete isometries - an illustration of noncommutative functional analysis

This article, addressed to a general audience of functional analysts, is intended to be an illustration of a few basic principles from `noncommutative functional analysis', more specifically the new field of {\em operator spaces.} In our illustration we show how the classical characterization of (possibly non-surjective) isometries between function algebras generalizes to operator algebras. We give some variants of this characterization, and a new proof which has some advantages.

Complete isometries into C*-algebras

We give various characterizations of into (not necessarily onto) complete isometries between $C^*$-algebras, generalizing a classical result of Holsztynski. Our results are related to a natural embedding of the noncommutative Shilov boundary in a second dual.
