Embedding Quartic Eulerian Digraphs on the Plane

Minimal obstructions for embedding 4-regular Eulerian digraphs on the plane are considered in relation to the partial order defined by the cycle removal operation. Their basic properties are provided and all obstructions with parallel arcs are classified.

Whitney's Theorem for 2-Regular Planar Digraphs

A digraph is 2-regular if every vertex has both indegree and outdegree two. We define an embedding of a 2-regular digraph to be a 2-cell embedding of the underlying graph in a closed surface with the added property that for every vertex~$v$, the two edges directed away from $v$ are not consecutive in the local rotation around $v$. In other words, at each vertex the incident edges are oriented in-out-in-out. The goal of this article is to provide an analogue of Whitney's theorem on planar embeddings in the setting of 2-regular digraphs. In the course of doing so, we note that Tutte's Theorem on peripheral cycles also has a natural analogue in this setting.

$E$-restricted Double Traces

For a graph $G$ and $E \subseteq E(G)$, an $E$-restricted strong trace is a closed walk which traverses every edge from $E$ once in each direction and every other edge twice in the same direction, with no nontrivial repetition at any vertex. We characterize graphs admitting $E$-restricted strong traces as well as $E$-restricted $d$-stable traces, as well as directed (mixed graph) versions of these results. We explain how these characterizations upgrade the mathematical model for self-assembling polypeptide nanostructure design first presented by Gradi\v sar et al.\ in 2013.

Heffter Arrays and Biembedding Graphs on Surfaces

A Heffter array is an m by n matrix with nonzero entries from Z_{2mn+1} such that i) every row and column sum to 0, and ii) no element from {x,-x} appears twice. We construct some Heffter arrays. These arrays are used to build current graphs used in topological graph theory. In turn, the current graphs are used to embed the complete graph K_{2mn+1} so that the faces can be 2-colored, called a biembedding. Under certain conditions each color class forms a cycle system. These generalize biembeddings of Steiner triple systems. We discuss some variations including Heffter arrays with empty cells, embeddings on nonorientable surfaces, complete multigraphs, and using integer in place of modular arithmetic.
