Weyl groups, the Dirac inequality, and isolated unitary unramified representations

I present several applications of the Dirac inequality to the determination of isolated unitary representations and associated "spectral gaps" in the case of unramified principal series. The method works particularly well in order to attach irreducible unitary representations to the large nilpotent orbits (e.g., regular, subregular) in the Langlands dual complex Lie algebra. The results could be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of Salamanca-Riba's classification of irreducible unitary $(\mathfrak g,K)$-modules with strongly regular infinitesimal character.

The nonabelian Fourier transform for elliptic unipotent representations of exceptional $p$-adic groups

We define an involution on the space of elliptic unipotent Langlands parameters of a reductive $p$-adic group $G$ and verify that when $G$ is split adjoint exceptional, the composition of this involution with the hyperspecial parahoric restriction map agrees with Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of the finite reductive quotient. This is inspired by recent works of Lusztig on the almost unipotent characters of $p$-adic groups and of Moeglin and Waldspurger on the elliptic Fourier transform of odd orthogonal groups.

The Dunkl-Cherednik Deformation of a Howe duality

We consider the deformed versions of the classical Howe dual pairs $(O(r),\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2))$ and $(O(r),\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{o}(2|2))$ in the context of a rational Cherednik algebra $H_c=H_c(W,\mathfrak{h})$ associated to a finite Coxeter group $W$ at the parameters $c$ and $t=1$. For the first pair, we compute the centraliser of the well-known copy of $\mathfrak{s}\cong\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{l}(2)$ inside $H_c$. For the second pair, we show that the classical copy of $\mathfrak{g}\cong\mathfrak{s}\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{o}(2|2)$ inside the Weyl-Clifford algebra $\mathcal{W}\otimes\mathcal{C}$ deforms to a Lie superalgebra inside $H_c\otimes\mathcal{C}$ and compute its centraliser algebra. For a generic parameter $c$ such that the standard $H_c$-module is unitary, we compute the joint $((H_c)^{\mathfrak{s}},\mathfrak{s})$- and $((H_c\otimes\mathcal{C})^{\mathfrak{g}},\mathfrak{g})$-decompositions of the relevant modules.

Symplectic Dirac operators for Lie algebras and graded Hecke algebras

We define a pair of symplectic Dirac operators $(D^+,D^-)$ in an algebraic setting motivated by the analogy with the algebraic orthogonal Dirac operators in representation theory. We work in the settings of $\mathbb Z/2$-graded quadratic Lie algebras $\mathfrak g=\mathfrak k+\mathfrak p$ and of graded affine Hecke algebras $\mathbb H$.

On the reducibility of induced representations for classical p-adic groups and related affine Hecke algebras

Let $π$ be an irreducible smooth complex representation of a general linear $p$-adic group and let $σ$ be an irreducible complex supercuspidal representation of a classical $p$-adic group of a given type, so that $π\otimesσ$ is a representation of a standard Levi subgroup of a $p$-adic classical group of higher rank. We show that the reducibility of the representation of the appropriate $p$-adic classical group obtained by (normalized) parabolic induction from $π\otimesσ$ does not depend on $σ$, if $σ$ is "separated" from the supercuspidal support of $π$. (Here, "separated" means that, for each factor $ρ$ of a representation in the supercuspidal support of $π$, the representation parabolically induced from $ρ\otimesσ$ is irreducible.) This was conjectured by E. Lapid and M. Tadić. (In addition, they proved, using results of C. Jantzen, that this induced representation is always reducible if the supercuspidal support is not separated.) More generally, we study, for a given set $I$ of inertial orbits of supercuspidal representations of $p$-adic general linear groups, the category $\CC _{I,σ}$ of smooth complex finitely generated representations of classical $p$-adic groups of fixed type, but arbitrary rank, and supercuspidal support given by $σ$ and $I$, show that this category is equivalent to a category of finitely generated right modules over a direct sum of tensor products of extended affine Hecke algebras of type $A$, $B$ and $D$ and establish functoriality properties, relating categories with disjoint $I$'s. In this way, we extend results of C. Jantzen who proved a bijection between irreducible representations corresponding to these categories. The proof of the above reducibility result is then based on Hecke algebra arguments, using Kato's exotic geometry.

Cocenters of $p$-adic groups, III: Elliptic and rigid cocenters

In this paper, we show that the elliptic cocenter of the Hecke algebra of a connected reductive group over a nonarchimedean local field is contained in the rigid cocenter. As applications, we prove the trace Paley-Wiener theorem and the abstract Selberg principle for mod-$l$ representations.

Dirac induction for rational Cherednik algebras

We introduce the local and global indices of Dirac operators for the rational Cherednik algebra $\mathsf{H}_{t,c}(G,\mathfrak{h})$, where $G$ is a complex reflection group acting on a finite-dimensional vector space $\mathfrak{h}$. We investigate precise relations between the (local) Dirac index of a simple module in the category $\mathcal{O}$ of $\mathsf{H}_{t,c}(G,\mathfrak{h})$, the graded $G$-character of the module, the Euler-Poincaré pairing, and the composition series polynomials for standard modules. In the global theory, we introduce integral-reflection modules for $\mathsf{H}_{t,c}(G,\mathfrak{h})$ constructed from finite-dimensional $G$-modules. We define and compute the index of a Dirac operator on the integral-reflection module and show that the index is, in a sense, independent of the parameter function $c$. The study of the kernel of these global Dirac operators leads naturally to a notion of dualised generalised Dunkl-Opdam operators.

Types and unitary representations of reductive p-adic groups

We prove that for every Bushnell-Kutzko type that satisfies a certain rigidity assumption, the equivalence of categories between the corresponding Bernstein component and the category of modules for the Hecke algebra of the type induces a bijection between irreducible unitary representations in the two categories. This is a generalization of the unitarity criterion of Barbasch and Moy for representations with Iwahori fixed vectors.

On the elliptic nonabelian Fourier transform for unipotent representations of p-adic groups

In this paper, we consider the relation between two nonabelian Fourier transforms. The first one is defined in terms of the Langlands-Kazhdan-Lusztig parameters for unipotent elliptic representations of a split p-adic group and the second is defined in terms of the pseudocoefficients of these representations and Lusztig's nonabelian Fourier transform for characters of finite groups of Lie type. We exemplify this relation in the case of the p-adic group of type G_2.

An Euler-Poincaré formula for depth zero Bernstein projector

Work of Bezrukavnikov--Kazhdan--Varshavsky uses an equivariant system of trivial idempotents of Moy--Prasad groups to obtain an Euler--Poincaré formula for the r--depth Bernstein projector. We establish an Euler--Poincaré formula for the projector to an individual depth zero Bernstein component in terms of an equivariant system of Peter--Weyl idempotents of parahoric subgroups P associated to a block of the reductive quotient of P.

A uniform classification of discrete series representations of affine Hecke algebras

We give a new and independent parameterization of the set of discrete series characters of an affine Hecke algebra $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbf{v}}$, in terms of a canonically defined basis $\mathcal{B}_{gm}$ of a certain lattice of virtual elliptic characters of the underlying (extended) affine Weyl group. This classification applies to all semisimple affine Hecke algebras $\mathcal{H}$, and to all $\mathbf{v}\in\mathcal{Q}$, where $\mathcal{Q}$ denotes the vector group of positive real (possibly unequal) Hecke parameters for $\mathcal{H}$. By analytic Dirac induction we define for each $b\in \mathcal{B}_{gm}$ a continuous (in the sense of [OS2]) family $\mathcal{Q}^{reg}_b:=\mathcal{Q}_b\backslash\mathcal{Q}_b^{sing}\ni\mathbf{v}\to\operatorname{Ind}_{D}(b;\mathbf{v})$, such that $ε(b;\mathbf{v})\operatorname{Ind}_{D}(b;\mathbf{v})$ (for some $ε(b;\mathbf{v})\in\{\pm 1\}$) is an irreducible discrete series character of $\mathcal{H}_{\mathbf{v}}$. Here $\mathcal{Q}^{sing}_b\subset\mathcal{Q}$ is a finite union of hyperplanes in $\mathcal{Q}$. In the non-simply laced cases we show that the families of virtual discrete series characters $\operatorname{Ind}_{D}(b;\mathbf{v})$ are piecewise rational in the parameters $\mathbf{v}$. Remarkably, the formal degree of $\operatorname{Ind}_{D}(b;\mathbf{v})$ in such piecewise rational family turns out to be rational. This implies that for each $b\in \mathcal{B}_{gm}$ there exists a universal rational constant $d_b$ determining the formal degree in the family of discrete series characters $ε(b;\mathbf{v})\operatorname{Ind}_{D}(b;\mathbf{v})$. We will compute the canonical constants $d_b$, and the signs $ε(b;\mathbf{v})$. For certain geometric parameters we will provide the comparison with the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Langlands classification.

Dirac cohomology for symplectic reflection algebras

We define uniformly the notions of Dirac operators and Dirac cohomology in the framework of the Hecke algebras introduced by Drinfeld. We generalize in this way the Dirac cohomology theory for Lusztig's graded affine Hecke algebras. We apply these constructions to the case of symplectic reflection algebras defined by Etingof-Ginzburg, particularly to rational Cherednik algebras for real or complex reflection groups with parameters t,c. As applications, we give criteria for unitarity of modules in category O and we show that the 0-fiber of the Calogero-Moser space admits a description in terms of a certain "Dirac morphism" originally defined by Vogan for representations of real semisimple Lie groups.

Star operations for affine Hecke algebras

In this paper, we consider the star operations for (graded) affine Hecke algebras which preserve certain natural filtrations. We show that, up to inner conjugation, there are only two such star operations for the graded Hecke algebra: the first, denoted $\star$, corresponds to the usual star operation from reductive $p$-adic groups, and the second, denoted $\bullet$ can be regarded as the analogue of the compact star operation of a real group considered by \cite{ALTV}. We explain how the star operation $\bullet$ appears naturally in the Iwahori-spherical setting of $p$-adic groups via the endomorphism algebras of Bernstein projectives. We also prove certain results about the signature of $\bullet$-invariant forms and, in particular, about $\bullet$-unitary simple modules.

One-W-type modules for rational Cherednik algebra and cuspidal two-sided cells

We classify the simple modules for the rational Cherednik algebra that are irreducible when restricted to W, in the case when W is a finite Weyl group. The classification turns out to be closely related to the cuspidal two-sided cells in the sense of Lusztig. We compute the Dirac cohomology of these modules and use the tools of Dirac theory to find nontrivial relations between the cuspidal Calogero-Moser cells and the cuspidal two-sided cells.

Formal degrees of unipotent discrete series representations and the exotic Fourier transform

We introduce a notion of elliptic fake degrees for unipotent elliptic representations of a semisimple p-adic group. We conjecture, and verify in some cases, that the relation between the formal degrees of unipotent discrete series representations of a semisimple p-adic group and the elliptic fake degrees is given by the exotic Fourier transform matrix introduced by Lusztig in the study of representations of finite groups of Lie type.

Ladder representations of GL(n,Q_p)

In this paper, we recover certain known results about the ladder representations of GL(n, Q_p) defined and studied by Lapid, Minguez, and Tadic. We work in the equivalent setting of graded Hecke algebra modules. Using the Arakawa-Suzuki functor from category O to graded Hecke algebra modules, we show that the determinantal formula proved by Lapid-Minguez and Tadic is a direct consequence of the BGG resolution of finite dimensional simple gl(n)-modules. We make a connection between the semisimplicity of Hecke algebra modules, unitarity with respect to a certain hermitian form, and ladder representations.

Cocenters and representations of affine Hecke algebra

In this paper, we study the relation between the cocenter and the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras. The approach is based on the interaction between the rigid cocenter, an important subspace of the cocenter, and the dual object in representation theory, the rigid quotient of the Grothendieck group of finite dimensional representations.
