Shift orbifolds, decompactification limits, and lattices

We describe the general shift orbifold of a Narain CFT and use this to investigate decompactification limits in the heterotic Narain moduli space. We also comment on higher rank theories and describe some applications to the CFT based on the Leech lattice and its shift orbifolds.

Topology change and heterotic flux vacua

We investigate the interrelation between topology and Narain T-duality of heterotic flux vacua. We present evidence that all 5 and 4-dimensional Minkowski space heterotic flux backgrounds with 8 supercharges have a locus in the moduli space with a T-dual description in terms of a compactification on the product of a K3 surface with a circle or a torus. A test of this equivalence is provided by calculating the new supersymmetric index on both sides of the duality. We examine the implications of these dualities for CHL-like orbifolds that reduce the rank of the gauge group, as well as those that lead to minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions. We also discuss properties of flux vacua that preserve minimal supersymmetry in 4 dimensions that cannot be related to conventional compactifications by Narain T-duality. Along the way we point out a number of properties of these vacua, including the role played by non-trivial flat gerbes, the appearance of rational worldsheet CFTs in decompactification limits, and the role of attractive K3 surfaces in backgrounds with minimal supersymmetry. Finally, we discuss the dual pairs from the perspective of M-theory/heterotic duality.

A Worldsheet Approach to $\mathbf{\mathcal{N}=1}$ Heterotic Flux Backgrounds

Heterotic backgrounds with torsion preserving minimal supersymmetry in four dimensions can be obtained as orbifolds of principal $T^{2}$ bundles over $K3$. We consider a worldsheet description of these backgrounds as gauged linear sigma-models (GLSMs) with $(0,2)$ supersymmetry. Such a formulation provides a useful framework in order to address the resolution of singularities of the orbifold geometries. We investigate the constraints imposed by discrete symmetries on the corresponding torsional GLSMs. In particular, the principal $T^{2}$ connection over $K3$ is inherited from $(0,2)$ vector multiplets. As these vectors gauge global scaling symmetries of products of projective spaces, the corresponding $K3$ geometry is naturally realized as an algebraic hypersurface in such a product (or as a branched cover of it). We outline the general construction for describing such orbifolds. We give explicit constructions for automorphisms of order two and three.

Moduli spaces of non-geometric type II/heterotic dual pairs

We study the moduli spaces of heterotic/type II dual pairs in four dimensions with N=2 supersymmetry corresponding to non-geometric Calabi-Yau backgrounds on the type II side and to T-fold compactifications on the heterotic side. The vector multiplets moduli space receives perturbative corrections in the heterotic description only, and non-perturbative correction in both descriptions. We derive explicitely the perturbative corrections to the heterotic four-dimensional prepotential, using the knowledge of its singularity structure and of the heterotic perturbative duality group. We also derive the exact hypermultiplets moduli space, that receives corrections neither in the string coupling nor in $\alpha'$.

Non-geometric Calabi-Yau Backgrounds and K3 automorphisms

We consider compactifications of type IIA superstring theory on mirror-folds obtained as K3 fibrations over two-tori with non-geometric monodromies involving mirror symmetries. At special points in the moduli space these are asymmetric Gepner models. The compactifications are constructed from non-geometric automorphisms that arise from the diagonal action of an automorphism of the K3 surface and of an automorphism of the mirror surface. We identify the corresponding gaugings of N=4 supergravity in four dimensions, and show that the minima of the potential describe the same four-dimensional low-energy physics as the worldsheet formulation in terms of asymmetric Gepner models. In this way, we obtain a class of Minkowski vacua of type II string theory which preserve N=2 supersymmetry. The massless sector consists of N=2 supergravity coupled to 3 vector multiplets, giving the STU model. In some cases there are additional massless hypermultiplets.

Heterotic Hyper-Kahler Flux Backgrounds

We study Heterotic supergravity on Hyper-Kahler manifolds in the presence of non-trivial warping and three form flux with Abelian bundles in the large charge limit. We find exact, regular solutions for multi-centered Gibbons-Hawking spaces and Atiyah-Hitchin manifolds. In the case of Atiyah-Hitchin, regularity requires that the circle at infinity is of the same order as the instanton number, which is taken to be large. Alternatively there may be a non-trivial density of smeared five branes at the bolt.

Threshold corrections in heterotic flux compactifications

We compute the one-loop threshold corrections to the gauge and gravitational couplings for a large class of N=2 non-K\"ahler heterotic compactifications with three-form flux, consisting in principal two-torus bundles over K3 surfaces. We obtain the results as sums of BPS-states contributions, depending on the topological data of the bundle. We analyse also the worldsheet non-perturbative corrections coming from instantons wrapping the torus fiber, that are mapped under S-duality to D-instanton corrections in type I flux compactifications.

Dressed elliptic genus of heterotic compactifications with torsion and general bundles

We define and compute the dressed elliptic genus of N = 2 heterotic compactifications with torsion that are principal two-torus bundles over a K3 surface. We consider the most general gauge bundle compatible with supersymmetry, a stable holomorphic vector bundle over the base together with an Abelian bundle over the total space, generalizing the computation previously done by the authors in the absence of the latter. Starting from a (0,2) gauged linear sigma-model with torsion we use supersymmetric localization to obtain the result. We provide also a mathematical definition of the dressed elliptic genus as a modified Euler characteristic and prove that both expressions agree for hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. Finally we show that it admits a natural decomposition in terms of N = 4 superconformal characters, that may be useful to investigate moonshine phenomena for this wide class of N = 2 vacua, that includes K3*T2 compactifications as special cases.

The Abelian Heterotic Conifold

We study heterotic supergravity on the conifold and its Z2 orbifold with Abelian gauge fields and three-form flux. At large distances, these solutions are locally Ricci-flat, have a magnetic flux through the two-sphere at infinity as well as non-zero five-brane charge. For a given flux, our family of solutions has three real parameters, the size of the pair of two spheres in the IR and the dilaton zero mode. We present an explicit analytic solution for the decoupled near horizon region where for a given flux, the size of the cycles is frozen and the only parameter is the dilaton zero mode. We also present an exactly solvable worldsheet CFT for this near horizon region. When one of the two cycles has vanishing size, the near horizon region no longer exists but we obtain a solution on the (unorbifolded) resolved conifold.

New supersymmetric index of heterotic compactifications with torsion

We compute the new supersymmetric index of a large class of N=2 heterotic compactifications with torsion, corresponding to principal two-torus bundles over warped K3 surfaces with H-flux. Starting from a UV description as a (0,2) gauged linear sigma-model with torsion, we use supersymmetric localization techniques to provide an explicit expression of the index as a sum over the Jeffrey-Kirwan residues of the one-loop determinant. We finally propose a geometrical formula that gives the new supersymmetric index in terms of bundle data, regardless of any particular choice of underlying two-dimensional theory.

Non-geometric Calabi-Yau compactifications and fractional mirror symmetry

We construct a wide class of non-geometric compactifications of type II superstring theories preserving N=1 space-time supersymmetry in four dimensions, starting from Calabi-Yau compactifications at Gepner points. Particular examples of this construction provide quantum equivalences between Calabi-Yau compactifications and non-Calabi-Yau ones, generalizing mirror symmetry. The associated Landau-Ginzburg models involve both chiral and twisted chiral multiplets hence cannot be lifted to ordinary Calabi-Yau gauged linear sigma-models.

Fractional Mirror Symmetry

Mirror symmetry relates type IIB string theory on a Calabi-Yau 3-fold to type IIA on the mirror CY manifold, whose complex structure and Kaehler moduli spaces are exchanged. We show that the mirror map is a particular case of a more general quantum equivalence, fractional mirror symmetry, between Calabi-Yau compactifications and non-CY ones. As was done by Greene and Plesser for mirror symmetry, we obtain these new dualities by considering orbifolds of Gepner models, of asymmetric nature, leading to superconformal field theories isomorphic to the original ones, but with a different target-space interpretation. The associated Landau-Ginzburg models involve both chiral and twisted chiral multiplets hence cannot be lifted to ordinary gauged linear sigma-models.

Asymmetric Gepner models in type II

We describe new four-dimensional type II compactifications with N=2 supersymmetry, based on asymmetric Gepner models for K3 x T^2. In more than half of these models, all the K3 moduli are lifted, giving at low energies N=2 supergravity with the STU vector multiplets and no hypermultiplets.

T-Duality in Gauged Linear Sigma-Models with Torsion

(0,2) gauged linear sigma models with torsion, corresponding to principal torus bundles over warped CY bases, provide a useful framework for getting exact statements about perturbative dualities in the presence of fluxes. In this context we first study dualities mapping the torus fiber onto itself, implying the existence of quantization constraints on the torus moduli for consistency. Second, we investigate dualities mixing the principal torus bundle with the gauge bundle, relating the torsional GLSMs to ordinary ones corresponding to CY compactifications with non-standard embeddings, namely two classes of models with different target-space topologies.

Gauge Threshold Corrections for N = 2 Heterotic Local Models with Flux, and Mock Modular Forms

We determine threshold corrections to the gauge couplings in local models of N=2 smooth heterotic compactifications with torsion, given by the direct product of a warped Eguchi-Hanson space and a two-torus, together with a line bundle. Using the worldsheet CFT description previously found and by suitably regularising the infinite target space volume divergence, we show that threshold corrections to the various gauge factors are governed by the non-holomorphic completion of the Appell-Lerch sum. While its holomorphic Mock-modular component captures the contribution of states that localise on the blown-up two-cycle, the non-holomorphic correction originates from non-localised bulk states. We infer from this analysis universality properties for N=2 heterotic local models with flux, based on target space modular invariance and the presence of such non-localised states. We finally determine the explicit dependence of these one-loop gauge threshold corrections on the moduli of the two-torus, and by S-duality we extract the corresponding string-loop and E1-instanton corrections to the Kaehler potential and gauge kinetic functions of the dual type I model. In both cases, the presence of non-localised bulk states brings about novel perturbative and non-perturbative corrections, some features of which can be interpreted in the light of analogous corrections to the effective theory in compact models.

Local models of heterotic flux vacua: spacetime and worldsheet aspects

We report on some recent progress in understanding heterotic flux compactifications, from a worldsheet perspective mainly. We consider local models consisting in torus fibration over warped Eguchi-Hanson space and non-Kähler resolved conifold geometries. We analyze the supergravity solutions and define a double-scaling limit of the resolved singularities, defined such that the geometry is smooth and weakly coupled. We show that, remarkably, the heterotic solutions admit solvable worldsheet CFT descriptions in this limit. This allows in particular to understand the important role of worldsheet non-perturbative effects.

Rolling tachyons for separated brane-antibrane systems

We consider tachyon condensation between a D-brane and an anti-D-brane in superstring theory, when they are separated in their common transverse directions. A simple rolling tachyon solution, that describes the time evolution of the process, is studied from the point of view of boundary conformal field theory. By computing the boundary beta-functions of the system, one finds that this theory is conformal, hence corresponds to an exact solution of the string theory equations of motion. By contrast, the time-reversal-symmetric rolling tachyon is not conformal. These results put constraints on the space-time effective actions for the system.

String Theory on Warped AdS_3 and Virasoro Resonances

We investigate aspects of holographic duals to time-like warped AdS_3 space-times--which include Gödel's universe--in string theory. Using worldsheet techniques similar to those that have been applied to AdS_3 backgrounds, we are able to identify space-time symmetry algebras that act on the dual boundary theory. In particular, we always find at least one Virasoro algebra with computable central charge. Interestingly, there exists a dense set of points in the moduli space of these models in which there is actually a second commuting Virasoro algebra, typically with different central charge than the first. We analyze the supersymmetry of the backgrounds, finding related enhancements, and comment on possible interpretations of these results. We also perform an asymptotic symmetry analysis at the level of supergravity, providing additional support for the worldsheet analysis.
