Bose-Einstein condensation in a mm-scale Ioffe-Pritchard trap

We have constructed a mm-scale Ioffe-Pritchard trap capable of providing axial field curvature of 7800 G/cm$^2$ with only 10.5 Amperes of driving current. Our novel fabrication method involving electromagnetic coils formed of hard anodized aluminum strips is compatible with ultra-high vacuum conditions, as demonstrated by our using the trap to produce Bose-Einstein condensates of 10$^6$ $^87$Rb atoms. The strong axial curvature gives access to a number of experimentally interesting configurations such as tightly confining prolate, nearly isotropic, and oblate spheroidal traps, as well as traps with variable tilt angles with respect to the nominal axial direction.

Collimated, single-pass atom source from a pulsed alkali metal dispenser for laser-cooling experiments

We have developed an improved scheme for loading atoms into a magneto-optical trap (MOT) from a directed alkali metal dispenser in < 10^-10 torr ultra-high vacuum conditions. A current-driven dispenser was surrounded with a cold absorbing "shroud" held at < 0 C, pumping rubidium atoms not directed into the MOT. This nearly eliminates background alkali atoms and reduces the detrimental rise in pressure normally associated with these devices. The system can be well-described as a current-controlled, rapidly-switched, two-temperature thermal beam, and was used to load a MOT with 3 x 10^8 atoms.

Transmission Spectrum of an Optical Cavity Containing N Atoms

The transmission spectrum of a high-finesse optical cavity containing an arbitrary number of trapped atoms is presented. We take spatial and motional effects into account and show that in the limit of strong coupling, the important spectral features can be determined for an arbitrary number of atoms, N. We also show that these results have important ramifications in limiting our ability to determine the number of atoms in the cavity.

Anisotropic dissipation of superfluid flow in a periodically-dressed Bose-Einstein condensate

The introduction of a steady-state spatially-periodic Raman coupling between two components of an ultracold atomic gas produces a dressed-state gas with an anisotropic and tunable dispersion relation. A Bose-Einstein condensate formed in such a gas is consequently characterized by an anisotropic superfluid critical velocity. The anisotropic dissipation of superfluid flow is quantified by considering the scattering of impurities flowing through this superfluid. A gradual transition from the isotropic nature of an uncoupled Bose-Einstein condensate to the anisotropic periodically-dressed condensate is obtained as the strength of the Raman coupling is varied. These results present a clear signature for future experiemental realizations of this novel superfluid.

Spinor condensates and light scattering from Bose-Einstein condensates

These notes discuss two aspects of the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates: optical properties and spinor condensates. The first topic includes light scattering experiments which probe the excitations of a condensate in both the free-particle and phonon regime. At higher light intensity, a new form of superradiance and phase-coherent matter wave amplification were observed. We also discuss properties of spinor condensates and describe studies of ground--state spin domain structures and dynamical studies which revealed metastable excited states and quantum tunneling.
