Shot noise limited characterization of femtosecond light pulses

Probing the evolution of physical systems at the femto- or attosecond timescale with light requires accurate characterization of ultrashort optical pulses. The time profiles of such pulses are usually retrieved by methods utilizing optical nonlinearities, which require significant signal powers and operate in a limited spectral range\cite{Trebino_Review_of_Scientific_Instruments97,Walmsley_Review_09}. We present a linear self-referencing characterization technique based on time domain localization of the pulse spectral components, operated in the single-photon regime. Accurate timing of the spectral slices is achieved with standard single photon detectors, rendering the technique applicable in any spectral range from near infrared to deep UV. Using detection electronics with about $70$ ps response, we retrieve the temporal profile of a picowatt pulse train with $\sim10$ fs resolution, setting a new scale of sensitivity in ultrashort pulse characterization.

Photodarkening of blinking quantum dots is not governed by Auger recombination

The observed intermittent light emission from colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals has long been associated with Auger recombination assisted quenching. We test this view by observing transient emission dynamics of CdSe/CdS/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals using time-resolved photon counting. The size and intensity dependence of the observed decay dynamics are inconsistent with the those expected from Auger processes. Moreover, the data suggests that in the `off' state the quantum dot cycles in a three-step process: photoexcitation, rapid trapping and subsequent slow nonradiative decay.

A Large Blue Shift of the Biexciton State in Tellurium Doped CdSe Colloidal Quantum Dots

The exciton-exciton interaction energy of Tellurium doped CdSe colloidal quantum dots is experimentally investigated. The dots exhibit a strong Coulomb repulsion between the two excitons, which results in a huge measured biexciton blue shift of up to 300 meV. Such a strong Coulomb repulsion implies a very narrow hole wave function localized around the defect, which is manifested by a large Stokes shift. Moreover, we show that the biexciton blue shift increases linearly with the Stokes shift. This result is highly relevant for the use of colloidal QDs as optical gain media, where a large biexciton blue shift is required to obtain gain in the single exciton regime.

Geometrical Representation of Sum Frequency Generation and Adiabatic Frequency Conversion

We present a geometrical representation of sum frequency generation process in the undepleted pump approximation. The analogy of such dynamics with the known optical Bloch equations is discussed. We use this analogy to present a novel technique for the achievement of both high efficiency and large bandwidth in a sum frequency conversion processes using adiabatic inversion scheme, adapted from NMR and light-matter interaction. The adiabatic constraints are derived in this context. Last, this adiabatic frequency conversion scheme is realized experimentally by a proper design of adiabatic aperiodically poled KTP device, using quasi phased matched method. In the experiments we achieved high efficiency signal to idler conversion over a bandwidth of 140nm.
