Testing for three-body quark forces in L=1 excited baryons

We discuss the matching of the quark model to the effective mass operator of the 1/Nc expansion using the permutation group S_N. As an illustration of the general procedure we perform the matching of the Isgur-Karl model for the spectrum of the negative parity L=1 excited baryons. Assuming the most general two-body quark Hamiltonian, we derive two correlations among the masses and mixing angles of these states which should hold in any quark model. These correlations constrain the mixing angles and can be used to test for the presence of three-body quark forces.

1/Nc expansion and the spin-flavor structure of the quark interaction in the constituent quark model

We study the hierarchy of the coefficients in the 1/Nc expansion for the negative parity L=1 excited baryons from the perspective of the constituent quark model. This is related to the problem of determining the spin-flavor structure of the quark interaction. The most general two-body scalar interaction between quarks contains the spin-flavor structures $t_1^a t_2^a, \vec s_1\cdot \vec s_2$ and $ \vec s_1\cdot \vec s_2 t_1^a t_2^a$. We show that in the limit of a zero range interaction all these structures are matched onto the same hadronic mass operator $S_c^2$, which gives a possible explanation for the dominance of this operator in the 1/Nc expansion for the L=1 states and implies that in this limit it is impossible to distinguish between these different spin-flavor structures. Modeling a finite range interaction through the exchange of a vector and pseudoscalar meson, we propose a test for the spin-flavor dependence of the quark forces. For the scalar part of the quark interaction we find that both pion exchange and gluon exchange are compatible with data.

Calculating Phases Between B => K* pi Amplitudes

A phase $ΔΦ$ between amplitudes for $B^0 \to K^{*0} π^0$ and $B^0 \to K^{*+} π^-$ plays a crucial role in a method for constraining Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters. We present a general argument for destructive interference between amplitudes for $B^0 \to K^{*+} π^-$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} π^0$ forming together a smaller $I(K^* π) = 3/2$ amplitude. Applying flavor SU(3) and allowing for conservative theoretical uncertainties, we obtain lower limits on $|ΔΦ|$ and its charge-conjugate. Values of these two phases favored by the BaBar Collaboration are in good agreement with our bounds.

CP Asymmetries in B->K pi, K*pi, rho K Decays

We show that ratios of tree and penguin amplitudes in B-> K*pi and B->rho K are two to three times larger than in B-> K pi. This allows for considerably larger CP asymmetries in the former processes than the 10% asymmetry measured in B0 -> K+pi-. We study isospin sum rules for rate asymmetries in B-> K pi, K*pi, rho K, estimating small violation from interference of tree and electroweak penguin amplitudes. The breaking of the K pi asymmetry sum rule is estimated to be one to two percent and negative. Violation of K*pi and rho K sum rules can be estimated from B->rho pi amplitudes using flavor SU(3), while breaking of a sum rule combining K*pi and rho K asymmetries can be measured directly in a Dalitz analysis of B0-> K+pi-pi0. The three sum rules can be tested at the LHCb and at a future Super Flavor Factory, providing precision searches for new Delta S =Delta I=1 operators in the low energy effective Hamiltonian.

Predictions for b -> ssdbar, ddsbar decays in the SM and with new physics

The b -> ssdbar and b -> ddsbar decays are highly suppressed in the SM, and are thus good probes of new physics (NP) effects. We discuss in detail the structure of the relevant SM effective Hamiltonian pointing out the presence of nonlocal contributions which can be about λ^{-4} (m_c^2/m_t^2) ~ 30% of the local operators (λ= 0.21 is the Cabibbo angle). The matrix elements of the local operators are computed with little hadronic uncertainty by relating them through flavor SU(3) to the observed ΔS = 0 decays. We identify a general NP mechanism which can lead to the branching fractions of the b\to ss\bar d modes at or just below the present experimental bounds, while satisfying the bounds from K-Kbar and B_{(s)}-Bbar_{(s)} mixing. It involves the exchange of a NP field carrying a conserved charge, broken only by its flavor couplings. The size of branching fractions within MFV, NMFV and general flavor violating NP are also predicted. We show that in the future energy scales higher than 10^3 TeV could be probed without hadronic uncertainties even for b-> s and b-> d transitions, if enough statistics becomes available.

Permutation group S_N and hadron spectroscopy

We discuss the application of the permutation group S_N to a few problems in hadron physics. A method is proposed for matching a quark model Hamiltonian onto the effective Hamiltonian of the 1/Nc expansion, which makes use of the transformation properties of the states and operators under S_N. This method is used to obtain information about the spin-flavor structure of the quark interaction Hamiltonian from the spectrum of the negative parity L=1 excited baryons. Assuming the most general 2-body quark Hamiltonian, we derive two correlations among the masses and mixing angles of these states which should hold in any quark model. These correlations constrain the mixing angles, and can be used to test for the presence of 3-body quark interactions. We find that the pure gluon-exchange model is disfavored by data, independently of any assumptions about the hadronic wave functions.

The Isgur-Karl model revisited

We show how to match the Isgur-Karl model to the spin-flavor quark operator expansion used in the 1/Nc studies of the non-strange negative parity L=1 excited baryons. Using the transformation properties of states and interactions under the permutation group S_3 we are able to express the operator coefficients as overlap integrals, without making any assumption on the spatial dependence of the quark wave functions. The general mass operator leads to parameter free mass relations and constraints on the mixing angles that are valid beyond the usual harmonic oscillator approximation. The Isgur-Karl model with harmonic oscillator wave functions provides a simple counterexample that demonstrates explicitly that the alternative operator basis for the 1/Nc expansion for excited baryons recently proposed by Matagne and Stancu is incomplete.

Quark Forces from Hadron Spectroscopy

We consider the implications of the most general two-body quark-quark interaction Hamiltonian for the spin-flavor structure of the negative parity L=1 excited baryons. Assuming the most general two-body quark interaction Hamiltonian, we derive two correlations among the masses and mixing angles of these states, which constrain the mixing angles, and can be used to test for the presence of three-body quark interactions. We find that the pure gluon-exchange model is disfavored by data, independently of any assumptions about the hadronic wave functions.

Benchmarks for the New-Physics Search through CP Violation in B^0->pi^0 K_S

Using isospin relations, we predict the Standard-Model correlation between S_{pi^0 K_S}=(sin 2beta)_{pi^0 K_S} and A_{pi^0 K_S}, the mixing-induced and direct CP asymmetries of B^0-> pi^0 K_S. The calculation uses flavour SU(3) only to fix the isospin-3/2 amplitude through the B^\pm->pi^\pm pi^0 branching ratio, and thus has a small irreducible theoretical error. It can reach percent level precision thanks to expected future lattice-QCD progress for the calculation of the relevant SU(3)-breaking form-factor ratio, and serves as a benchmark for new-physics searches. We obtain an interesting picture in the A_{pi^0 K_S} - S_{pi^0 K_S} plane, where the current experimental data show a discrepancy with the Standard Model, and comment on the direct CP asymmetries of B^0->pi^-K^+ and B^+ -> pi^0 K^+. A modified electroweak penguin with a large new CP-violating phase can explain the discrepancy and allows us to accommodate also the corresponding data for other b->s penguin-dominated decays.

Small amplitude effects in $B^0\to D^+D^-$ and related decays

Intrigued by a recent Belle result for a large direct CP asymmetry in $B^0\to D^+D^-$, we study the effects of a $\bar b\to \bar uu\bar d$ quark transition by combining the asymmetry information with rates and asymmetries in isospin-related decays. Arguing for a hierarchy among several contributions to these decays, including an exchange amplitude which we estimate, we present tests for factorization of the leading terms, and obtain an upper bound on the ratio of $\bar b\to \bar uu\bar d$ and $\bar b\to \bar cc\bar d$ amplitudes. We prove an approximate $ΔI=1/2$ amplitude relation for $B\to D\bar D$, and an approximate equality between CP asymmetries in $B^0\to D^+D^-$ and $B^+\to D^+\bar D^0$. Violations of these relations by Belle measurements, at $1.8σ$ and $3.6σ$ respectively, if confirmed, would indicate a possible New Physics contribution in $\bar b\to \bar uu\bar d$. Applying flavor SU(3), we extend this study to a total of ten processes including $ΔS=0$ decays involving final $D_s$ and initial $B_s$ mesons, and $ΔS=1$ decays of $B$ and $B_s$ mesons into pairs of charmed pseudoscalar mesons. The decays $B_s\to D\bar D$ provide useful information about a small exchange amplitude, responsible for a decay rate difference between $B^+\to D^+\bar D^0$ and $B^0\to D^+D^-$. A method for determining the weak phase $γ$, based on CP asymmetries in $B^0(t)\to D^+D^-$ and the decay rate for $B_s\to D^+_sD^-_s$ or $B^{+(0)}\to D^+_s\bar D^0 (D^-)$, is shown to involve high sensitivity to SU(3) breaking.

The permutation group S_N and large Nc excited baryons

We study the excited baryon states for an arbitrary number of colors Nc from the perspective of the permutation group S_N of N objects. Classifying the transformation properties of states and quark-quark interaction operators under S_N allows a general analysis of the spin-flavor structure of the mass operator of these states, in terms of a few unknown constants parameterizing the unknown spatial structure. We explain how to perform the matching calculation of a general two-body quark-quark interaction onto the operators of the 1/Nc expansion. The inclusion of core and excited quark operators is shown to be necessary. Considering the case of the negative parity L=1 states transforming in the MS of S_N, we discuss the matching of the one-gluon and the Goldstone-boson exchange interactions.

Constraint on rho-bar, eta-bar from B to K*pi

A linear CKM relation, $\barη= \tanΦ_{3/2}(\barρ-0.24\pm 0.03)$, involving a $1σ$ range for $Φ_{3/2}$, $20^\circ < Φ_{3/2} < 115^\circ$, is obtained from $B^0\to K^*π$ amplitudes measured recently in Dalitz plot analyses of $B^0\to K^+π^-π^0$ and $B^0(t)\to K_Sπ^+π^-$. This relation is consistent within the large error on $Φ_{3/2}$ with other CKM constraints which are unaffected by new $b\to s\bar q q$ operators. Sensitivity of the method to a new physics contribution in the $ΔS=ΔI=1$ amplitude is discussed.

New Physics at a Super Flavor Factory

The potential of a Super Flavor Factory (SFF) for searches of New Physics is reviewed. While very high luminosity B physics is assumed to be at the core of the program, its scope for extensive charm and tau studies are also emphasized. The possibility to run at the Upsilon(5S) is also very briefly discussed; in principle, this could provide very clean measurements of B_s decays. The strength and reach of a SFF is most notably due to the possibility of examining an impressive array of very clean observables. The angles and the sides of the unitarity triangle can be determined with unprecedented accuracy. These serve as a reference for New Physics (NP) sensitive decays such as B^+ ->tau^+ nu and penguin dominated hadronic decay modes, providing tests of generic NP scenarios with an accuracy of a few percent. Besides, very precise studies of direct and time dependent CP asymmetries in radiative B decays and forward-backward asymmetry studies in B-> X_s l^+ l^- and numerous null tests using B, charm and tau decays are also likely to provide powerful insights into NP. The dramatic increase in luminosity at a SFF will also open up entirely new avenues for probing NP observables, e.g. by allowing sensitive studies using theoretically clean processes such as B -> X_s nu nubar. The SFF is envisioned to be a crucial tool for essential studies of flavor in the LHC era, and will extend the reach of the LHC in many important ways.

Excited Baryons in Large Nc QCD: Matching the 1/Nc expansion to quark models using the permutation group S_N

We show how to match quark models to the 1/Nc expansion of QCD. As an example we discuss in detail the mass operator of orbitally excited baryons and match it to the one-gluon exchange and the one-boson exchange variants of the quark model. The matching procedure is very general and makes use of the transformation properties of states and operators under S_N^{orb} \times S_N^{sp-fl}, the permutation group acting on the orbital and spin-flavor degrees of freedom of N quarks.

Positive parity pentaquark towers in large Nc QCD

We construct the complete set of positive parity pentaquarks, which correspond in the quark model to {\bar s} q^{Nc+1} states with one unit of orbital angular momentum L=1. In the large Nc limit they fall into the K=1/2 and K=3/2 irreps (towers) of the contracted SU(4)c symmetry. We derive predictions for the mass spectrum and the axial couplings of these states at leading order in 1/Nc. The strong decay width of the lowest-lying positive parity exotic state is of order O(1/Nc), such that this state is narrow in the large Nc limit. Replacing the antiquark with a heavy antiquark {\bar Q} q^{Nc+1}, the two towers become degenerate, split only by O(1/mQ) hyperfine interactions. We obtain predictions for the strong decay widths of heavy pentaquarks to ordinary baryons and heavy H(*)_{\bar Q} mesons at leading order in 1/Nc and 1/mQ.

Improved method for CKM constraints in charmless three-body B and B_s decays

Recently Ciuchini, Pierini and Silvestrini proposed a method for constraining CKM parameters in B->K pi pi and B_s-> K pi pi through phase measurements of amplitudes involving I=3/2 K*pi final states. We show that complementary information on CKM parameters may be obtained by studying the phases of Delta I=1 B->(K*pi)_{I=1/2}, B_s->(K*\bar K)_{I=1} and B_s->(\bar K* K)_{I=1} amplitudes. Hadronic uncertainties in these constraints from electroweak penguin operators O_9 and O_10, studied using flavor SU(3), are shown to be very small in B->K pi pi and B_s->K pi pi and somewhat larger in B_s-> K\bar K pi. The first processes imply a precise linear relation between \bar rho and \bar eta, with a measurable slope and an intercept at \bar eta=0 involving a theoretical error of 0.03. The decays B_s-> K pi pi permit a measurement of gamma involving a theoretical error below a degree. We note that while time-dependence is required when studying B^0 decays at the Upsilon(4S), it may not be needed when studying B_s decays at hadronic colliders.

Subleading collinear operators and their matrix elements

We discuss the most general form of the leading power suppressed collinear operators in the soft-collinear effective theory. Such operators appear in the description of power corrections to exclusive heavy flavor decays into energetic light hadrons. Reparametrization invariance in the SCET provides powerful constraints on the Wilson coefficients of the subleading collinear operators. We present explicit results for the matrix elements of these operators on pseudoscalar and vector mesons, which are expressed in terms of twist-2 and twist-3 light-cone wave functions. We consistently include the effects of three-particle light-cone distribution amplitudes and find that their impact could be of phenomenological relevance.
