Excited L=1 baryons in large Nc QCD

The physics of the orbitally excited baryons simplifies drastically in the large Nc limit. The states are arranged into irreducible representations of the contracted SU(4)_c symmetry, with mixing angles determined exactly. The ratios of the strong couplings N* -> [Nπ]_{S,D} are predicted in this limit, with results in agreement with those following from the quark model (with the large Nc mixing angles). We present a phenomenological analysis of the observed nonstrange baryons from the perspective of the 1/Nc expansion, including constraints from their masses and strong decays.

Strong Phases and Factorization for Color Suppressed Decays

We prove a factorization theorem in QCD for the color suppressed decays B0-> D0 M0 and B0-> D*0 M0 where M is a light meson. Both the color-suppressed and W-exchange/annihilation amplitudes contribute at lowest order in LambdaQCD/Q where Q={mb, mc, Epi}, so no power suppression of annihilation contributions is found. A new mechanism is given for generating non-perturbative strong phases in the factorization framework. Model independent predictions that follow from our results include the equality of the B0 -> D0 M0 and B0 -> D*0 M0 rates, and equality of non-perturbative strong phases between isospin amplitudes, delta(DM) = delta(D*M). Relations between amplitudes and phases for M=pi,rho are also derived. These results do not follow from large Nc factorization with heavy quark symmetry.

On Power Suppressed Operators and Gauge Invariance in SCET

The form of collinear gauge invariance for power suppressed operators in the soft-collinear effective theory is discussed. Using a field redefinition we show that it is possible to make any power suppressed ultrasoft-collinear operators invariant under the original leading order gauge transformations. Our manipulations avoid gauge fixing. The Lagrangians to O(lambda^2) are given in terms of these new fields. We then give a simple procedure for constructing power suppressed soft-collinear operators in SCET_II by using an intermediate theory SCET_I.

1/Nc corrections to the SU(4)_c symmetry for L=1 baryons: The Three Towers

In the large Nc limit, the mass spectrum of the L=1 orbitally excited baryons N* has a very simple structure, with states degenerate in pairs of spins J=(1/2,3/2), (3/2,5/2), corresponding to irreducible representations (towers) of the contracted SU(4)_c symmetry group. The mixing angles are completely determined in this limit. Using a mass operator approach, we study 1/Nc corrections to this picture, pointing out a four-fold ambiguity in the correspondence of the observed baryons with the large Nc states. For each of the four possible assignments, we fit the coefficients of the quark operators contributing to the mass spectrum to O(Nc^{-1}). We comment on the implications of our results for the constituent quark model description of these states.

Threshold effects in excited charmed baryon decays

Motivated by recent results on charmed baryons from CLEO and FOCUS, we reexamine the couplings of the orbitally excited charmed baryons. Due to its proximity to the [Sigma_c pi] threshold, the strong decays of the Lambda_c(2593) are sensitive to finite width effects. This distorts the shape of the invariant mass spectrum in Lambda_{c1}-> Lambda_c pi^+pi^- from a simple Breit-Wigner resonance, which has implications for the experimental extraction of the Lambda_c(2593) mass and couplings. We perform a fit to unpublished CLEO data which gives M(Lambda_c(2593)) - M(Lambda_c) = 305.6 +- 0.3 MeV and h2^2 = 0.24^{+0.23}_{-0.11}, with h2 the Lambda_{c1}-> Sigma_c pi strong coupling in the chiral Lagrangian. We also comment on the new orbitally excited states recently observed by CLEO.

A Complete Basis for Power Suppressed Collinear-Ultrasoft Operators

We construct operators that describe power corrections in mixed collinear-ultrasoft processes in QCD. We treat the ultrasoft-collinear Lagrangian to O(lambda^2), and heavy-to-light currents involving collinear quarks to O(λ) including new three body currents. A complete gauge invariant basis is derived which has a full reduction in Dirac structures and is valid for matching at any order in alpha_s. The full set of reparameterization invariance (RPI) constraints are included, and are found to restrict the number of parameters appearing in Wilson coefficients and rule out some classes of operators. The QCD ultrasoft-collinear Lagrangian has two O(lambda^2) operators in its gauge invariant form. For the O(lambda) heavy-to-light currents there are (4,4,14,14,21) subleading (scalar, pseudo-scalar, vector, axial-vector, tensor) currents, where (1,1,4,4,7) have coefficients that are not determined by RPI. In a frame where v_perp=0 and n.v =1 the total number of currents reduces to (2,2,8,8,13), but the number of undetermined coefficients is the same. The role of these operators and universality of jet functions in the factorization theorem for heavy-to-light form factors is discussed.

Factorization and Endpoint Singularities in Heavy-to-Light decays

We prove a factorization theorem for heavy-to-light form factors. Our result differs in several important ways from previous proposals. A proper separation of scales gives hard kernels that are free of endpoint singularities. A general procedure is described for including soft effects usually associated with the tail of wavefunctions in hard exclusive processes. We give an operator formulation of these soft effects using the soft-collinear effective theory, and show that they appear at the same order in the power counting as the hard spectator contribution.

Factorization in leptonic radiative B -> gamma eνdecays

We discuss factorization in exclusive radiative leptonic B->γeνdecays using the soft-collinear effective theory. The form factors describing these decays can be expanded in a power series in Lambda/E_γwith E_γthe photon energy. We write down the most general operators in the effective theory which contribute to the form factors at leading order in Lambda_QCD/E_γ, proving their factorization into hard, jet and soft contributions, to all orders in alpha_s.

B0 -> D*- a1+: Chirality tests and resolving an ambiguity in 2β+γ

We point out that the decays of B mesons into a vector meson and an axial-vector meson can distinguish between left and right-handed polarized mesons, in contrast to decays into two vector mesons. Measurements in B0 -> D*-a1+ are proposed for testing factorization and the V-A structure of the weak b -> c current, and for resolving a discrete ambiguity in 2β+ γ.

Subleading corrections to the V_ub determination from exclusive B decays

It has been proposed to determine the CKM matrix element |V_ub| in a model-independent way from a combination of rare and semileptonic B and D decays near the zero recoil point. An essential ingredient in such a determination is a heavy quark symmetry relation connecting the form-factors appearing in B -> K* e+e- to semileptonic form factors relevant for B -> rho eν. We estimate the leading corrections to this symmetry relation, of order α_s(m_b) and Λ/m_b, pointing out that they can be as large as 20%, depending on the value of the matrix element of a dimension-4 operator. Dimensional analysis estimates of this matrix element give a corresponding uncertainty in |V_ub| of the order of a few percent.

Power Counting in the Soft-Collinear Effective Theory

We describe in some detail the derivation of a power counting formula for the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET). This formula constrains which operators are required to correctly describe the infrared at any order in the Lambda_QCD/Q expansion (lambda expansion). The result assigns a unique lambda-dimension to graphs in SCET solely from vertices, is gauge independent, and can be applied independent of the process. For processes with an OPE the lambda-dimension has a correspondence with dynamical twist.

Photon polarization in radiative B decays

We study decay distributions in B -> K pi pi gamma, combining contributions from several overlapping resonances in a K pi pi mass range near 1400 MeV, (1^+) K_1(1400), (2^+) K^*_2(1430) and (1^-) K^*(1410). A method is proposed for using these distributions to determine a photon polarization parameter in the effective radiative weak Hamiltonian. This parameter is measured through an up-down asymmetry of the photon direction relative to the K pi pi decay plane. We calculate a dominant up-down asymmetry of 0.33 +- 0.05 from the K1(1400) resonance, which can be measured with about 10^8 B B-bar pairs, thus providing a new test for the Standard Model and a probe for some of its extensions.

Probing New Physics with b -> sγDecays

In the Standard Model, the photon emitted in b->sγdecays is predicted to be left-handed polarized. We discuss the types of New Physics which can produce a deviation from this prediction, focusing on the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. A new method is proposed for testing these predictions, which makes use of angular correlations in exclusive B -> Kππγdecays.

Hard Scattering Factorization from Effective Field Theory

In this paper we show how gauge symmetries in an effective theory can be used to simplify proofs of factorization formulae in highly energetic hadronic processes. We use the soft-collinear effective theory, generalized to deal with back-to-back jets of collinear particles. Our proofs do not depend on the choice of a particular gauge, and the formalism is applicable to both exclusive and inclusive factorization. As examples we treat the pi-gamma form factor (gamma gamma* -> pi^0), light meson form factors (gamma* M -> M), as well as deep inelastic scattering (e- p -> e- X), Drell-Yan (p pbar -> X l+ l-), and deeply virtual Compton scattering (gamma* p -> gamma(*) p).

Reparameterization Invariance for Collinear Operators

We discuss restrictions on operators in the soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) which follow from the ambiguity in the decomposition of collinear momenta and the freedom in the choice of light-like basis vectors $n$ and $\bar n$. Invariance of SCET under small changes in $n$ and/or $\bar n$ implies a symmetry of the effective theory that constrains the form of allowed operators with collinear fields. The restrictions occur at a given order in the power counting as well as between different orders. As an example, we present the complete set of higher order operators that are related to the collinear quark kinetic term.

Symmetry-breaking corrections to heavy meson form factor relations

In the heavy quark limit, the form factors for semileptonic and rare radiative B decays into light mesons are related by heavy quark spin symmetry. Here we compute the leading corrections of order Λ/m_Q to these symmetry relations, showing also how to include hard gluon effects to any order in α_s(m_Q). The subleading correction to the form factor relation for B\to πcan be computed exactly in the soft pion limit. For decays into vector mesons, the matrix elements of two local dimension-4 operators are needed, one of which vanishes in the constituent quark model. A few applications are briefly discussed.

Soft-Collinear Factorization in Effective Field Theory

The factorization of soft and ultrasoft gluons from collinear particles is shown at the level of operators in an effective field theory. Exclusive hadronic factorization and inclusive partonic factorization follow as special cases. The leading order Lagrangian is derived using power counting and gauge invariance in the effective theory. Several species of gluons are required, and softer gluons appear as background fields to gluons with harder momenta. Two examples are given: the factorization of soft gluons in B->D pi, and the soft-collinear convolution for the B->Xs gamma spectrum.

Measuring the Photon Helicity in Radiative B Decays

We propose a way of measuring the photon polarization in radiative B decays into K resonance states decaying to Kππ, which can test the Standard Model and probe new physics. The photon polarization is shown to be measured by the up-down asymmetry of the photon direction relative to the Kππdecay plane in the K resonance rest frame. The integrated asymmetry in K_1(1400)\to Kππ, calculated to be 0.34\pm 0.05 in the Standard Model, is measurable at currently operating B factories.
