To see Symmetry in a Forest of Trees

The exact symmetry identities among four-point tree-level amplitudes of bosonic open string theory as derived by G. W. Moore are re-examined. The main focuses of this work are: (1) Explicit construction of kinematic configurations and a new polarization basis for the scattering processes. These setups simplify greatly the functional forms of the exact symmetry identities, and help us to extract easily high-energy limits of stringy amplitudes appearing in the exact identities. (2) Connection and comparison between D. J. Gross's high-energy stringy symmetry and the exact symmetry identities as derived by G. W. Moore. (3) Observation of symmetry patterns of stringy amplitudes with respect to the order of energy dependence in scattering amplitudes.

A Renormalization Group Approach to A Yang-Mills Two Matrix Model

A Yang-Mills type two matrix model with mass terms is studied by use of a matrix renormalization group approach proposed by Brezin and Zinn-Justin. The renormalization group method indicates that the model exhibits a critical behavior similar to that of two dimensional Euclidean gravity. A massless limit and the generation of quadratic terms along the renormalization group flow are discussed.

Renormalization group approach to matrix models via noncommutative space

We develop a new renormalization group approach to the large-N limit of matrix models. It has been proposed that a procedure, in which a matrix model of size (N-1) \times (N-1) is obtained by integrating out one row and column of an N \times N matrix model, can be regarded as a renormalization group and that its fixed point reveals critical behavior in the large-N limit. We instead utilize the fuzzy sphere structure based on which we construct a new map (renormalization group) from N \times N matrix model to that of rank N-1. Our renormalization group has great advantage of being a nice analog of the standard renormalization group in field theory. It is naturally endowed with the concept of high/low energy, and consequently it is in a sense local and admits derivative expansions in the space of matrices. In construction we also find that our renormalization in general generates multi-trace operators, and that nonplanar diagrams yield a nonlocal operation on a matrix, whose action is to transport the matrix to the antipode on the sphere. Furthermore the noncommutativity of the fuzzy sphere is renormalized in our formalism. We then analyze our renormalization group equation, and Gaussian and nontrivial fixed points are found. We further clarify how to read off scaling dimensions from our renormalization group equation. Finally the critical exponent of the model of two-dimensional gravity based on our formalism is examined.

Branes from a non-Abelian (2,0) tensor multiplet with 3-algebra

In this paper, we study the equations of motion for non-Abelian N=(2,0) tensor multiplets in six dimensions, which were recently proposed by Lambert and Papageorgakis. Some equations are regarded as constraint equations. We employ a loop extension of the Lorentzian three-algebra (3-algebra) and examine the equations of motion around various solutions of the constraint equations. The resultant equations take forms that allow Lagrangian descriptions. We find various (5+d)-dimensional Lagrangians and investigate the relation between them from the viewpoint of M-theory duality.

Classical Solutions of a Torsion Gravity from a Large N Matrix Model

Large N matrices can describe covariant derivatives in curved space. Applying this interpretation to the IKKT matrix model, the field equation of gravity is derived from the matrix equation of motion. We study classical solutions of this field equation with torsion degrees of freedom in empty spacetime. Time dependent solutions with homogeneity and isotropy, and time independent solutions with spherical symmetry are investigated under particular settings of torsions.

Supersymmetric reduced models with a symmetry based on Filippov algebra

Generalizations of the reduced model of super Yang-Mills theory obtained by replacing the Lie algebra structure to Filippov $n$-algebra structures are studied. Conditions for the reduced model actions to be supersymmetric are examined. These models are related with what we call $\{cal N}_{min}=2$ super $p$-brane actions.

Membrane scattering from Bagger-Lambert theory

In this note, we discuss membrane scattering from the three dimensional N=8 superconformal theory with SO(8) global symmetry constructed by Bagger-Lambert and Gustavsson. We discuss whether the one loop effective potential consistently reproduces the Newton potential of membranes moving in an eleven dimensional orbifold space.

Quantum gravity equation in large N Yang-Mills quantum mechanics

We propose a new interpretation of the BFSS large N matrix quantum mechanics analogous to a novel interpretation of the IKKT matrix model where infinitely large N matrices act as differential operators in a curved space. In this picture, the Schrödinger equation in the BFSS model is regarded as the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which determines the wave function of universe. An explicit solution of wave function is studied in a simple two-dimensional minisuperspace model.

Quasinormal Modes of Kerr Black Holes in Four and Higher Dimensions

We analytically calculate to leading order the asymptotic form of quasinormal frequencies of Kerr black holes in four, five and seven dimensions. All the relevant quantities can be explicitly expressed in terms of elliptical integrals. In four dimensions, we confirm the results obtained by Keshest and Hod by comparing the analytic results to the numerical ones.

Hagedorn Strings and Correspondence Principle in AdS(3)

Motivated by the possibility of formulating a strings/black hole correspondence in AdS space, we extract the Hagedorn behavior of thermal AdS_3 bosonic string from 1-loop partition function of SL(2,R) WZW model. We find that the Hagedorn temperature is monotonically increasing as the AdS radius shrinks, reaches a maximum of order of string scale set by the unitarity bound of the CFT for internal space. The resulting density of states near the Hagedorn temperature resembles the form as for strings in flat space and is dominated by the space-like long string configurations. We then argue a conjectured strings/black hole correspondence in AdS space by applying the Hagedorn thermodynamics. We find the size of the corresponding black hole is a function of the AdS radius. For large AdS radius a black hole far bigger than the string scale will form. On the contrary, when the AdS and string scales are comparable a string size black hole will form. We also examine strings on BTZ background obtained through SL(2,Z) transformation. We find a tachyonic divergence for a BTZ black hole of string scale size.

One-Loop Effect of Null-Like Cosmology's Holographic Dual Super-Yang-Mills

We calculate the 1-loop effect in super-Yang-Mills which preserves 1/4-supersymmetries and is holographically dual to the null-like cosmology with a big-bang singularity. Though the bosonic and fermionic spectra do not agree precisely, we do obtain vanishing 1-loop vacuum energy for generic warped plane-wave type backgrounds with a big-bang singularity. Moreover, we find that the cosmological "constant" contributed either by bosons or fermions is time-dependent. The issues about the particle production of some background and about the UV structure are also commented. We argue that the effective higher derivative interactions are suppressed as long as the Fourier transform of the time-dependent coupling is UV-finite. Our result holds for scalar configurations that are BPS but with arbitrary time-dependence. This suggests the existence of non-renormalization theorem for such a new class of time-dependent theories. Altogether, it implies that such a super-Yang-Mills is scale-invariant, and that its dual bulk quantum gravity might behave regularly near the big bang.

Drag force in SYM plasma with B field from AdS/CFT

We investigate drag force in a thermal plasma of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory via both fundamental and Dirichlet strings under the influence of non-zero NSNS $B$-field background. In the description of AdS/CFT correspondence the endpoint of these strings correspondes to an external monopole or quark moving with a constant electromagnetic field. We demonstrate how the configuration of string tail as well as the drag force obtains corrections in this background.

Correlators of Matrix Models on Homogeneous Spaces

We investigate the correlators of TrA_{mu}A_{nu} in matrix models on homogeneous spaces: S^2 and S^2 x S^2. Their expectation value is a good order parameter to measure the geometry of the space on which non-commutative gauge theory is realized. They also serve as the Wilson lines which carry the minimum momentum. We develop an efficient procedure to calculate them through 1PI diagrams. We determine the large N scaling behavior of the correlators. The order parameter shows that fuzzy S^2 x S^2 acquires a 4 dimensional fractal structure in contrast to fuzzy S^2. We also find that the two point functions exhibit logarithmic scaling violations.

N=2 3d-Matrix Integral with Myers Term

An exact matrix integral is evaluated for a $2\times 2$ 3-dimensional matrix model with Myers term. We derive weak and strong coupling expansions of the effective action. We also calculate the expectation values of the quadratic and cubic operators. Implications for non-commutative gauge theory on fuzzy sphere are discussed.

Gravity/Non-Commutative Yang-Mills Correspondence and Doubletons

We discuss the gravity dual description for a non-commutative Yang-Mills theory, which reduces to that on AdS_{5} x S_{5} in the commutative limit. It is found that doubletons do not decouple in this dual gravity description unless one takes the commutative limit. The decoupling of the doubletons in AdS_{5} space implies that the dual gauge theory has SU(N) gauge symmetry. Our result implies that this gravity description is dual to non-commutative U(N) gauge theory. It is compatible with the claim that U(1) and SU(N) gauge symmetries can not separate in non-commutative U(N) gauge theory.

Noncommutative Gauge Dynamics from Brane Configurations with Background B field

We study D=3 field theories on the D3-branes stretched between two NS5-branes with NS B-field background. The theory is a noncommutative gauge theory. The mirror symmetry and S-duality of the theory are discussed. A new feature is that the mirror of the noncommutative gauge theory is not a field theory but an open string decoupled from the closed string. We also consider brane creation phenomena and use the result to discuss the analogue of the Seiberg duality. A noncommutative soliton is interpreted as a D1-brane induced on D3-brane.
