Hyperbolic tessellations associated to Bianchi groups

Let F/Q be number field. The space of positive definite binary Hermitian forms over F form an open cone in a real vector space. There is a natural decomposition of this cone into subcones, which descend give rise to hyperbolic tessellations of 3-dimensional hyperbolic space by ideal polytopes. We compute the structure of these polytopes for a range of imaginary quadratic fields.

Perfect forms over totally real number fields

A rational positive-definite quadratic form is perfect if it can be reconstructed from the knowledge of its minimal nonzero value m and the finite set of integral vectors v such that f(v) = m. This concept was introduced by Voronoi and later generalized by Koecher to arbitrary number fields. One knows that up to a natural "change of variables'' equivalence, there are only finitely many perfect forms, and given an initial perfect form one knows how to explicitly compute all perfect forms up to equivalence. In this paper we investigate perfect forms over totally real number fields. Our main result explains how to find an initial perfect form for any such field. We also compute the inequivalent binary perfect forms over real quadratic fields Q(\sqrt{d}) with d \leq 66.

Binary Hermitian forms over a cyclotomic field

Let z be a primitive fifth root of unity and let F be the cyclotomic field F=Q(z). Let O be the ring of integers. We compute the Voronoi polyhedron of binary Hermitian forms over F and classify GL_2(O)-conjugacy classes of perfect forms. The combinatorial data of this polyhedron can be used to compute the cohomology of the arithmetic group GL_2(O) and Hecke eigen forms.

The arithmetic of trees

The arithmetic of the natural numbers can be extended to arithmetic operations on planar binary trees. This gives rise to a non-commutative arithmetic theory. In this exposition, we describe this arithmetree, first defined by Loday, and investigate prime trees.

Hecke operators and Hilbert modular forms

Let F be a real quadratic field with ring of integers O and with class number 1. Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of GL_2 (O). We describe a technique to compute the action of the Hecke operators on the cohomology H^3 (Gamma; C). For F real quadratic this cohomology group contains the cuspidal cohomology corresponding to cuspidal Hilbert modular forms of parallel weight 2. Hence this technique gives a way to compute the Hecke action on these Hilbert modular forms.

Integral cohomology of certain Picard modular surfaces

Let Gamma be a congruence subgroup of the Picard modular group of an imaginary number field k, and let D be the associated symmetric space. We describe a method to compute the integral cohomology of the locally symmetric space Gamma\D. The method is implemented for the case k=Q(i) and k=Q(sqrt(-3)), and the cohomology is computed for various Gamma.

Explicit reduction theory for SU(2,1;Z[i])

Let Gamma\D be an arithmetic quotient of a symmetric space of non-compact type. A spine D_0 is a Gamma-equivariant deformation retraction of D with dimension equal to the virtual cohomological dimension of Gamma. We explicitly construct a spine for the case of Gamma=SU(2,1;Z[i]). The spine is then used to compute the cohomology of Gamma\D with various local coefficients.

On the existence of spines for Q-rank 1 groups

Let X=Gamma\G/K be an arithmetic quotient of a symmetric space of non-compact type. In the case that G has Q-rank 1, we construct Gamma-equivariant deformation retractions of D=G/K onto a set D_0. We prove that D_0 is a spine, having dimension equal to the virtual cohomological dimension of Gamma. In fact, there is a (k-1)-parameter family of such deformations retractions, where k is the number of Gamma-conjugacy classes of rational parabolic subgroups of G. The construction of the spine also gives a way to construct an exact fundamental domain for Gamma.
