Internal Calibration of the PandaX-II Detector with Radon Gaseous Sources

We have developed a low-energy electron recoil (ER) calibration method with $^{220}$Rn for the PandaX-II detector. $^{220}$Rn, emanated from natural thorium compounds, was fed into the detector through the xenon purification system. From 2017 to 2019, we performed three dedicated calibration campaigns with different radon sources. We studied the detector response to $α$, $β$, and $γ$ particles with focus on low energy ER events. During the runs in 2017 and 2018, the amount of radioactivity of $^{222}$Rn were on the order of 1\% of that of $^{220}$Rn and thorium particulate contamination was negligible, especially in 2018. We also measured the background contribution from $^{214}$Pb for the first time in PandaX-II with the help from a $^{222}$Rn injection. Calibration strategy with $^{220}$Rn and $^{222}$Rn will be implemented in the upcoming PandaX-4T experiment and can be useful for other xenon-based detectors as well.

Results of Dark Matter Search using the Full PandaX-II Exposure

We report the dark matter search results obtained using the full 132 ton$\cdot$day exposure of the PandaX-II experiment, including all data from March 2016 to August 2018. No significant excess of events is identified above the expected background. Upper limits are set on the spin-independent dark matter-nucleon interactions. The lowest 90% confidence level exclusion on the spin-independent cross section is $2.2\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ at a WIMP mass of 30 GeV/$c^2$.

MGA: Momentum Gradient Attack on Network

The adversarial attack methods based on gradient information can adequately find the perturbations, that is, the combinations of rewired links, thereby reducing the effectiveness of the deep learning model based graph embedding algorithms, but it is also easy to fall into a local optimum. Therefore, this paper proposes a Momentum Gradient Attack (MGA) against the GCN model, which can achieve more aggressive attacks with fewer rewiring links. Compared with directly updating the original network using gradient information, integrating the momentum term into the iterative process can stabilize the updating direction, which makes the model jump out of poor local optimum and enhance the method with stronger transferability. Experiments on node classification and community detection methods based on three well-known network embedding algorithms show that MGA has a better attack effect and transferability.

Understanding Anomaly Detection with Deep Invertible Networks through Hierarchies of Distributions and Features

Deep generative networks trained via maximum likelihood on a natural image dataset like CIFAR10 often assign high likelihoods to images from datasets with different objects (e.g., SVHN). We refine previous investigations of this failure at anomaly detection for invertible generative networks and provide a clear explanation of it as a combination of model bias and domain prior: Convolutional networks learn similar low-level feature distributions when trained on any natural image dataset and these low-level features dominate the likelihood. Hence, when the discriminative features between inliers and outliers are on a high-level, e.g., object shapes, anomaly detection becomes particularly challenging. To remove the negative impact of model bias and domain prior on detecting high-level differences, we propose two methods, first, using the log likelihood ratios of two identical models, one trained on the in-distribution data (e.g., CIFAR10) and the other one on a more general distribution of images (e.g., 80 Million Tiny Images). We also derive a novel outlier loss for the in-distribution network on samples from the more general distribution to further improve the performance. Secondly, using a multi-scale model like Glow, we show that low-level features are mainly captured at early scales. Therefore, using only the likelihood contribution of the final scale performs remarkably well for detecting high-level feature differences of the out-of-distribution and the in-distribution. This method is especially useful if one does not have access to a suitable general distribution. Overall, our methods achieve strong anomaly detection performance in the unsupervised setting, and only slightly underperform state-of-the-art classifier-based methods in the supervised setting. Holograhic two-currents model with coupling and its conductivites

We implement a holographic gravity model of two gauge fields with a coupling between them, which is dual to a two-currents model. An analytical black brane solution is obtained. In particular, we work out the expressions of conductivities with coupling and find that the expressions of conductivities are directly related to the coupling parameter $θ$. It is the main topic of our present work. As an application, we calculate the conductivities by the scheme outlined here and briefly discuss the properties of the conductivities. An interesting property is that as the coupling $θ$ increases, the dip at low frequency in $Re[σ_A]$/$Re[σ_B]$ becomes deepening and then turns into a hard-gap-like when $θ=1$, which is independent of the doping $χ$. Some monotonic behaviors of the conductivities are also discussed.

Analytical study of the holographic superconductor from higher derivative theory

In this paper, we analytically study the holographic superconductor models with the high derivative (HD) coupling terms. Using the Sturm-Liouville (SL) eigenvalue method, we perturbatively calculate the critical temperature. The analytical results are in good agreement with the numerical results. It confirms that the perturbative method in terms of the HD coupling parameters is available. Along the same line, we analytically calculate the value of the condensation near the critical temperature. We find that the phase transition is second order with mean field behavior, which is independent of the HD coupling parameters. Then in the low temperature limit, we also calculate the conductivity, which is qualitatively consistent with the numerical one. We find that the superconducting energy gap is proportional to the value of the condensation. But we note that since the condensation changes with the HD coupling parameters, as the function of the HD coupling parameters, the superconducting energy gap follows the same change trend as that of the condensation.

Doped holographic fermionic system

We construct a two-current model. It includes two gauge fields, which introduce the doping effect, and a neutral scalar field. And then we numerically construct an AdS black brane geometry with scalar hair. Over this background, we study the fermionic system with the pseudoscalar Yukawa coupling. Some universal properties from the pseudoscalar Yukawa coupling are revealed. In particular, as the coupling increases, there is a transfer of the spectral weight from the low energy band to the high energy band. The transfer is over low energy scales but not over all energy scales. The peculiar properties are also explored. The study shows that with the increase of the doping, the gap opens more difficult. It indicates that there is a competition between the pseudoscalar Yukawa coupling and the doping.

Sato: Contextual Semantic Type Detection in Tables

Detecting the semantic types of data columns in relational tables is important for various data preparation and information retrieval tasks such as data cleaning, schema matching, data discovery, and semantic search. However, existing detection approaches either perform poorly with dirty data, support only a limited number of semantic types, fail to incorporate the table context of columns or rely on large sample sizes for training data. We introduce Sato, a hybrid machine learning model to automatically detect the semantic types of columns in tables, exploiting the signals from the context as well as the column values. Sato combines a deep learning model trained on a large-scale table corpus with topic modeling and structured prediction to achieve support-weighted and macro average F1 scores of 0.925 and 0.735, respectively, exceeding the state-of-the-art performance by a significant margin. We extensively analyze the overall and per-type performance of Sato, discussing how individual modeling components, as well as feature categories, contribute to its performance.

Chaotic dynamics of string around charged black brane with hyperscaling violation

By fast Lyapunov indicator (FLI), we study the chaotic dynamics of closed string around charged black brane with hyperscaling violation (HV). The Hawking temperature, Lifshitz dynamical exponent and HV exponent together affect the chaotic dynamics of this system. The temperature plays the role of driving the closed string to escape to infinity. There is a threshold value $z_{\ast}=2$, below which the string is captured by the black brane no matter where the string is placed at the beginning. However, when $z>2$, the string escapes to infinity if it is placed near the black brane at the beginning, but if the initial position of string is far away from the black brane, it oscillates around the black brane till eternity, which is a quasi-periodic motion. HV exponent plays the role of driving the string falling into the black brane. With the increase of HV exponent $θ$, the falling velocity becomes faster. We find that when we heat the system with large HV exponent, the chaotic system does not essentially changes. It indicates that the HV exponent plays a very important role in determining the state of the chaotic system. Also we study the the effect from the winding number of the string. The study indicates that the chaotic dynamics of the string is insensitive to the winding number.

Unsupervised Euclidean Distance Attack on Network Embedding

Considering the wide application of network embedding methods in graph data mining, inspired by the adversarial attack in deep learning, this paper proposes a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based Euclidean Distance Attack strategy (EDA) to attack the network embedding, so as to prevent certain structural information from being discovered. EDA focuses on disturbing the Euclidean distance between a pair of nodes in the embedding space as much as possible through minimal modifications of the network structure. Since a large number of downstream network algorithms, such as community detection and node classification, rely on the Euclidean distance between nodes to evaluate the similarity between them in the embedding space, EDA can be considered as a universal attack on a variety of network algorithms. Different from traditional supervised attack strategies, EDA does not need labeling information, and, in other words, is an unsupervised network embedding attack method.

Progressive Augmentation of GANs

Training of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) is notoriously fragile, requiring to maintain a careful balance between the generator and the discriminator in order to perform well. To mitigate this issue we introduce a new regularization technique - progressive augmentation of GANs (PA-GAN). The key idea is to gradually increase the task difficulty of the discriminator by progressively augmenting its input or feature space, thus enabling continuous learning of the generator. We show that the proposed progressive augmentation preserves the original GAN objective, does not compromise the discriminator's optimality and encourages a healthy competition between the generator and discriminator, leading to the better-performing generator. We experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of PA-GAN across different architectures and on multiple benchmarks for the image synthesis task, on average achieving ~3 point improvement of the FID score.

Group Pruning using a Bounded-Lp norm for Group Gating and Regularization

Deep neural networks achieve state-of-the-art results on several tasks while increasing in complexity. It has been shown that neural networks can be pruned during training by imposing sparsity inducing regularizers. In this paper, we investigate two techniques for group-wise pruning during training in order to improve network efficiency. We propose a gating factor after every convolutional layer to induce channel level sparsity, encouraging insignificant channels to become exactly zero. Further, we introduce and analyse a bounded variant of the L1 regularizer, which interpolates between L1 and L0-norms to retain performance of the network at higher pruning rates. To underline effectiveness of the proposed methods,we show that the number of parameters of ResNet-164, DenseNet-40 and MobileNetV2 can be reduced down by 30%, 69% and 75% on CIFAR100 respectively without a significant drop in accuracy. We achieve state-of-the-art pruning results for ResNet-50 with higher accuracy on ImageNet. Furthermore, we show that the light weight MobileNetV2 can further be compressed on ImageNet without a significant drop in performance.

An Improved Evaluation of the Neutron Background in the PandaX-II Experiment

In dark matter direct detection experiments, neutron is a serious source of background, which can mimic the dark matter-nucleus scattering signals. In this paper, we present an improved evaluation of the neutron background in the PandaX-II dark matter experiment by a novel approach. Instead of fully relying on the Monte Carlo simulation, the overall neutron background is determined from the neutron-induced high energy signals in the data. In addition, the probability of producing a dark-matter-like background per neutron is evaluated with a complete Monte Carlo generator, where the correlated emission of neutron(s) and $γ$(s) in the ($α$, n) reactions and spontaneous fissions is taken into consideration. With this method, the neutron backgrounds in the Run 9 (26-ton-day) and Run 10 (28-ton-day) data sets of PandaX-II are estimated to be 0.66$\pm$0.24 and 0.47$\pm$0.25 events, respectively.

Searching for Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay of $^{136}$Xe with PandaX-II Liquid Xenon Detector

We report the Neutrino-less Double Beta Decay (NLDBD) search results from PandaX-II dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber. The total live time used in this analysis is 403.1 days from June 2016 to August 2018. With NLDBD-optimized event selection criteria, we obtain a fiducial mass of 219 kg of natural xenon. The accumulated xenon exposure is 242 kg$\cdot$yr, or equivalently 22.2 kg$\cdot$yr of $^{136}$Xe exposure. At the region around $^{136}$Xe decay Q-value of 2458 keV, the energy resolution of PandaX-II is 4.2%. We find no evidence of NLDBD in PandaX-II and establish a lower limit for decay half-life of 2.4 $ \times 10^{23} $ yr at the 90% confidence level, which corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ββ} < (1.3 - 3.5)$ eV. This is the first NLDBD result reported from a dual-phase xenon experiment.

PolSAR Image Classification based on Polarimetric Scattering Coding and Sparse Support Matrix Machine

POLSAR image has an advantage over optical image because it can be acquired independently of cloud cover and solar illumination. PolSAR image classification is a hot and valuable topic for the interpretation of POLSAR image. In this paper, a novel POLSAR image classification method is proposed based on polarimetric scattering coding and sparse support matrix machine. First, we transform the original POLSAR data to get a real value matrix by the polarimetric scattering coding, which is called polarimetric scattering matrix and is a sparse matrix. Second, the sparse support matrix machine is used to classify the sparse polarimetric scattering matrix and get the classification map. The combination of these two steps takes full account of the characteristics of POLSAR. The experimental results show that the proposed method can get better results and is an effective classification method.

Ektelo: A Framework for Defining Differentially-Private Computations

The adoption of differential privacy is growing but the complexity of designing private, efficient and accurate algorithms is still high. We propose a novel programming framework and system, Ektelo, for implementing both existing and new privacy algorithms. For the task of answering linear counting queries, we show that nearly all existing algorithms can be composed from operators, each conforming to one of a small number of operator classes. While past programming frameworks have helped to ensure the privacy of programs, the novelty of our framework is its significant support for authoring accurate and efficient (as well as private) programs. After describing the design and architecture of the Ektelo system, we show that Ektelo is expressive, allows for safer implementations through code reuse, and that it allows both privacy novices and experts to easily design algorithms. We demonstrate the use of Ektelo by designing several new state-of-the-art algorithms.

Polarimetric Convolutional Network for PolSAR Image Classification

The approaches for analyzing the polarimetric scattering matrix of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data have always been the focus of PolSAR image classification. Generally, the polarization coherent matrix and the covariance matrix obtained by the polarimetric scattering matrix only show a limited number of polarimetric information. In order to solve this problem, we propose a sparse scattering coding way to deal with polarimetric scattering matrix and obtain a close complete feature. This encoding mode can also maintain polarimetric information of scattering matrix completely. At the same time, in view of this encoding way, we design a corresponding classification algorithm based on convolution network to combine this feature. Based on sparse scattering coding and convolution neural network, the polarimetric convolutional network is proposed to classify PolSAR images by making full use of polarimetric information. We perform the experiments on the PolSAR images acquired by AIRSAR and RADARSAT-2 to verify the proposed method. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method get better results and has huge potential for PolSAR data classification. Source code for sparse scattering coding is available at https://github.com/liuxuvip/Polarimetric-Scattering-Coding.

PandaX-II Constraints on Spin-Dependent WIMP-Nucleon Effective Interactions

We present PandaX-II constraints on candidate WIMP-nucleon effective interactions involving the nucleon or WIMP spin, including, in addition to standard axial spin-dependent (SD) scattering, various couplings among vector and axial currents, magnetic and electric dipole moments, and tensor interactions. The data set corresponding to a total exposure of 54-ton-days is reanalyzed to determine constraints as a function of the WIMP mass and isospin coupling. We obtain WIMP-nucleon cross section bounds of $\rm 1.6 \times 10^{-41} cm^2$ and $\rm 9.0 \times 10^{-42} cm^2$ ($90\%$ c.l.) for neutron-only SD and tensor coupling, respectively, for a mass $M_\mathrm{WIMP} \sim {\rm 40~GeV}/c^2$. The SD limits are the best currently available for $M_\mathrm{WIMP} > {\rm 40~GeV}/c^2$. We show that PandaX-II has reached a sensitivity sufficient to probe a variety of other candidate spin-dependent interactions at the weak scale.
