Local and global patterns in quasiparticle interference: a reduced response function approach

A physical system exposes to us in a real space, while its description often refers to its reciprocal momentum space. A connection between them can be established by exploring patterns of quasiparticles interference (QPI), which is experimentally accessible by Fourier transformation of the scanning tunneling spectroscopy (FT-STS). We here investigate how local and global features of QPI patterns are related to the geometry and topology of electronic structure in the considered physical system. A reduced response function (RRF) approach is developed that can analyze QPI patterns with clear physical pictures. It is justified that the generalized joint density of states, which is the imaginary part of RRF, for studying QPI. Moreover, we reveal that global patterns of QPI may be indicators of topological numbers for gapless systems, and demonstrate that robustness of such indicators against distractive local features of QPI for topological materials with complicated band structures.

Quantum-enhanced least-square support vector machine: simplified quantum algorithm and sparse solutions

Quantum algorithms can enhance machine learning in different aspects. Here, we study quantum-enhanced least-square support vector machine (LS-SVM). Firstly, a novel quantum algorithm that uses continuous variable to assist matrix inversion is introduced to simplify the algorithm for quantum LS-SVM, while retaining exponential speed-up. Secondly, we propose a hybrid quantum-classical version for sparse solutions of LS-SVM. By encoding a large dataset into a quantum state, a much smaller transformed dataset can be extracted using quantum matrix toolbox, which is further processed in classical SVM. We also incorporate kernel methods into the above quantum algorithms, which uses both exponential growth Hilbert space of qubits and infinite dimensionality of continuous variable for quantum feature maps. The quantum LS-SVM exploits quantum properties to explore important themes for SVM such as sparsity and kernel methods, and stresses its quantum advantages ranging from speed-up to the potential capacity to solve classically difficult machine learning tasks.

Realizing quantum linear regression with auxiliary qumodes

In order to exploit quantum advantages, quantum algorithms are indispensable for operating machine learning with quantum computers. We here propose an intriguing hybrid approach of quantum information processing for quantum linear regression, which utilizes both discrete and continuous quantum variables, in contrast to existing wisdoms based solely upon discrete qubits. In our framework, data information is encoded in a qubit system, while information processing is tackled using auxiliary continuous qumodes via qubit-qumode interactions. Moreover, it is also elaborated that finite squeezing is quite helpful for efficiently running the quantum algorithms in realistic setup. Comparing with an all-qubit approach, the present hybrid approach is more efficient and feasible for implementing quantum algorithms, still retaining exponential quantum speed-up.

Nonlinear regression based on a hybrid quantum computer

Incorporating nonlinearity into quantum machine learning is essential for learning a complicated input-output mapping. We here propose quantum algorithms for nonlinear regression, where nonlinearity is introduced with feature maps when loading classical data into quantum states. Our implementation is based on a hybrid quantum computer, exploiting both discrete and continuous variables, for their capacity to encode novel features and efficiency of processing information. We propose encoding schemes that can realize well-known polynomial and Gaussian kernel ridge regressions, with exponentially speed-up regarding to the number of samples.

Exact analysis on the singularity of the joint density of states and its relationship to the quasiparticle interference

Singularities of the joint density of states (JDOS) and Fourier-transformed local density of states (FT-LDOS) correspond to the hot spots in quasiparticle interference patterns. In this paper the singularity of JDOS is analyzed exactly, with three types of singularities being classified. In particular, the third type of singularities are found exactly to be envelopes of the contours of constant energy. Remarkably, we show that JDOS and FT-LDOS have the same singular points. Approaching to the singular points, both quantities diverge complementarily in an inverse-square-root manner if the joint curvature is nonzero. The relative magnitude of divergence is governed by the joint curvature as well as the product of the quasiparticle velocities. If the joint curvature of certain singularity is zero, the divergence has a higher order than -1/2.

Generalized joint density of states and its application to exploring the pairing symmetry of superconductors

We introduce a generalized joint density of states (GJDOS), which incorporates the coherent factor into the JDOS, to study quasiparticle interference (QPI) in superconductors. The intimate relation between the Fourier-transformed local density of states and GJDOS is revealed: they corre- spond respectively to the real and imaginary parts of a generalized impurity-response function, and particularly share the same angular factors and singular boundaries, as seen from our approximate analytic results for d-wave superconductors. Remarkably, our numerical GJDOS analysis agrees well with the QPI patten of d-wave cuprates and s\pm-wave iron-based superconductors. Moreover, we illustrate that the present GJDOS scenario can uncover the sign features of the superconducting gap and thus can be used to explore the possible pairing symmetry of the KxFe2-ySe2 superconductors.

Unconventional Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov states in spin-orbit coupled condensates: exact results

We find that a model Hamiltonian of s-wave superconductors in the presence of spin-orbit interactions and a Zeeman field is exactly solvable. Most intriguingly, based on the exact solutions, an unconventional type of Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) ground state is rigorously revealed, in which the center-of-mass momentum of the fermion pair is proportional to the Zeeman field. We also elaborate on the drifting effect of the Zeeman field on the spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensate.

Joint density of states and its relationship with quasiparticle interference pattern of d-wave superconductors

We present analytic analyses for the joint density of states (JDOS) and the elastic scattering susceptibility (ESS) for d-wave superconductors under the linear dispersion approximation. The profile of the JDOS, determined by the curves on which the JDOS diverges, is found to be the envelope function related to the contour of constant energy of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We derive the explicit form of the envelope functions. The intrinsic relationship of the JDOS patten and the octet model of ESS is clearly revealed. It is also found that apexes of the envelope function coincide with the octet vectors when the Dirac-cone anisotropy is strong, which is relevant to the d-wave cuprates.
