Non-Uniqueness of Bubbling for Wave Maps

We consider wave maps from $\mathbb R^{2+1}$ to a $C^\infty$-smooth Riemannian manifold, $\mathcal N$. Such maps can exhibit energy concentration, and at points of concentration, it is known that the map (suitably rescaled and translated) converges weakly to a harmonic map, known as a bubble. We give an example of a wave map which exhibits a type of non-uniqueness of bubbling. In particular, we exhibit a continuum of different bubbles at the origin, each of which arise as the weak limit along a different sequence of times approaching the blow-up time. This is the first known example of non-uniqueness of bubbling for dispersive equations. Our construction is inspired by the work of Peter Topping [Topping 2004], who demonstrated a similar phenomena can occur in the setting of harmonic map heat flow, and our mechanism of non-uniqueness is the same 'winding' behavior exhibited in that work.

Construction of $L^2$ log-log blowup solutions for the mass critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation

In this article, we study the log-log blowup dynamics for the mass critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ under rough but structured random perturbations at $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ regularity. In particular, by employing probabilistic methods, we provide a construction of a family of $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ regularity solutions which do not lie in any $H^{s}(\mathbb{R}^2)$ for any $s>0$, and which blowup according to the log-log dynamics.

Poisson Commuting Energies for a System of Infinitely Many Bosons

We consider the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy in one spatial dimension. We establish the existence of an infinite sequence of observables such that the corresponding trace functionals, which we call ``energies,'' commute with respect to the weak Lie-Poisson structure defined by the authors in arXiv:1908.03847. The Hamiltonian equation associated to the third energy functional is precisely the GP hierarchy. The equations of motion corresponding to the remaining energies generalize the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger hierarchy, the third element of which is the one-dimensional cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation. This work provides substantial evidence for the GP hierarchy as a new integrable system.

A Rigorous Derivation of the Hamiltonian Structure for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We consider the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in any spatial dimension, which is a well-known example of an infinite-dimensional Hamiltonian system. Inspired by the knowledge that the NLS is an effective equation for a system of interacting bosons as the particle number tends to infinity, we provide a derivation of the Hamiltonian structure, which is comprised of both a Hamiltonian functional and a weak symplectic structure, for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation from quantum many-body systems. Our geometric constructions are based on a quantized version of the Poisson structure introduced by Marsden, Morrison and Weinstein for a system describing the evolution of finitely many indistinguishable classical particles.

The focusing energy-critical nonlinear wave equation with random initial data

We consider the focusing energy-critical quintic nonlinear wave equation in three dimensional Euclidean space. It is known that this equation admits a one-parameter family of radial stationary solutions, called solitons, which can be viewed as a curve in $ \dot H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^3) \times H^{s-1}_x(\mathbb{R}^3)$, for any $s > 1/2$. By randomizing radial initial data in $ \dot H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^3) \times H^{s-1}_x(\mathbb{R}^3)$ for $s > 5/6$, which also satisfy a certain weighted Sobolev condition, we produce with high probability a family of radial perturbations of the soliton which give rise to global forward-in-time solutions of the focusing nonlinear wave equation that scatter after subtracting a dynamically modulated soliton. Our proof relies on a new randomization procedure using distorted Fourier projections associated to the linearized operator around a fixed soliton. To our knowledge, this is the first long-time random data existence result for a focusing wave or dispersive equation on Euclidean space outside the small data regime.

Almost sure local well-posedness and scattering for the 4D cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation

We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in four space dimensions and establish almost sure local well-posedness and conditional almost sure scattering for random initial data in $H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^4)$ with $\frac{1}{3} < s < 1$. The main ingredient in the proofs is the introduction of a functional framework for the study of the associated forced cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, which is inspired by certain function spaces used in the study of the Schrödinger maps problem, and is based on Strichartz spaces as well as variants of local smoothing, inhomogeneous local smoothing, and maximal function spaces. Additionally, we prove an almost sure scattering result for randomized radially symmetric initial data in $H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^4)$ with $\frac{1}{2} < s < 1$.

Scattering for defocusing energy subcritical nonlinear wave equations

We consider the Cauchy problem for the defocusing power type nonlinear wave equation in $(1+3)$-dimensions for energy subcritical powers $p$ in the range $3 < p< 5$. We prove that any solution is global-in-time and scatters to free waves in both time directions as long as its critical Sobolev norm stays bounded on the maximal interval of existence.

An infinite sequence of conserved quantities for the cubic Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$

We consider the (de)focusing cubic Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) hierarchy on $\mathbb{R}$, which is an infinite hierarchy of coupled linear inhomogeneous PDE which appears in the derivation of the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation from quantum many-particle systems. Motivated by the fact that the cubic NLS on $\mathbb{R}$ is an integrable equation which admits infinitely many conserved quantities, we exhibit an infinite sequence of operators which generate analogous conserved quantities for the GP hierarchy.

Almost sure boundedness of iterates for derivative nonlinear wave equations

We study nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb R^{2+1}$ with quadratic derivative nonlinearities, which include in particular nonlinearities exhibiting a null form structure, with random initial data in $H_x^1\times L^2_x$. In contrast to the counterexamples of Zhou \cite{Zhou} and Foschi-Klainerman \cite{FK}, we obtain a uniform time interval $I$ on which the Picard iterates of all orders are almost surely bounded in $C_t(I ; \dot H_x^1)$.

Almost sure scattering for the 4D energy-critical defocusing nonlinear wave equation with radial data

We consider the energy-critical defocusing nonlinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^4$ and establish almost sure global existence and scattering for randomized radially symmetric initial data in $H^s_x(\mathbb{R}^4) \times H^{s-1}_x(\mathbb{R}^4)$ for $\frac{1}{2} < s < 1$. This is the first almost sure scattering result for an energy-critical dispersive or hyperbolic equation with scaling super-critical initial data. The proof is based on the introduction of an approximate Morawetz estimate to the random data setting and new large deviation estimates for the free wave evolution of randomized radially symmetric data.

Symplectic non-squeezing for the cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation on $\mathbb{T}^3$

We consider the periodic defocusing cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in three dimensions in the symplectic phase space $H^{\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{T}^3) \times H^{-\frac{1}{2}}(\mathbb{T}^3)$. This space is at the critical regularity for this equation, and in this setting there is no global well-posedness nor any uniform control on the local time of existence for arbitrary initial data. We prove a local-in-time non-squeezing result and a conditional global-in-time result which states that uniform bounds on the Strichartz norms of solutions imply global-in-time non-squeezing. As a consequence of the conditional result, we conclude non-squeezing for certain subsets of the phase space, and in particular, we prove small data non-squeezing for long times. The proofs rely on several approximation results for the flow, which we obtain using a combination of probabilistic and deterministic techniques.

On the almost sure global well-posedness of energy sub-critical nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider energy sub-critical defocusing nonlinear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$ and establish the existence of unique global solutions almost surely with respect to a unit-scale randomization of the initial data on Euclidean space. In particular, we provide examples of initial data at super-critical regularities which lead to unique global solutions. The proof is based on probabilistic growth estimates for a new modified energy functional. This work improves upon the authors' previous results in [25] by significantly lowering the regularity threshold and strengthening the notion of uniqueness.

Random data Cauchy theory for nonlinear wave equations of power-type on $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation of power-type on $\mathbb{R}^3$. We establish an almost sure global existence result with respect to a suitable randomization of the initial data. In particular, this provides examples of initial data of super-critical regularity which lead to global solutions. The proof is based upon Bourgain's high-low frequency decomposition and improved averaging effects for the free evolution of the randomized initial data.

Rate of Convergence for Cardy's Formula

We show that crossing probabilities in 2D critical site percolation on the triangular lattice in a piecewise analytic Jordan domain converge with power law rate in the mesh size to their limit given by the Cardy-Smirnov formula. We use this result to obtain new upper and lower bounds of exp(O(sqrt(log log R))) R^(-1/3) for the probability that the cluster at the origin in the half-plane has diameter R, improving the previously known estimate of R^(-1/3+o(1)).
